Excellently built 12-inch ultrabook with the usual trade-offs for an ultra-portable device while still being relatively well-priced. It has a generally good display (the sRGB coverage holds it back), good input devices and extra long battery life. All the essential features for a business-centric machine.

Even though this is a PC that has great consumer appeal for style-minded laptop shoppers, HP does market it as a business/professional machine. That means you get some extra features, such as a MIL-Spec durability, including resistance to dust and short drops, specially tuned audio and mic placement for Skype calls, and a dedicated toll-free support phone line just for EliteBook customers.

HP has returned to form in recent months. The HP Spectre is excellent, the Elitebook Folio G1 is as good. It is an unfussy business laptop. HP designed it for companies and corporate buyers. It has corporate features like Intel vPro support which IT professionals use to manage PCs in organisations. There is a dedicated communications button that can link to Skype for Business.

This is such a shame, as the HP Elitebook Folio G1 looks every bit like the ultimate Windows 10 ultraportable. It’s desirable and its premium, lightweight looks should make it the most sought after device HP’s ever made. Sadly, it’s all undermined by its terrible battery life and underwhelming performance, which at this kind of price just isn’t acceptable. The XPS 13 might not be quite as slender, but when it’s both faster and longer-lasting, and has an equally gorgeous display and top class build quality, the G1 just can’t compete.

We’ve been fond of previous HP laptops, so the lack of attention to detail in the HP EliteBook Folio G1 is surprising. From responsiveness, performance and cooling to battery life and ergonomics, HP has fumbled the ball with the design of this ultra portable laptop.

Compared with its 4K-equipped sibling, whose sharp looks and generally compelling feature set it shares, the 1080p HD version of the HP EliteBook Folio G1 trades screen resolution and storage space for more battery life and a smaller price tag. For that reason, we think it's a better buy for most users. That said, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon also has an attractive minimalist design, but increases the screen resolution; adds multiple traditional I/O connectors like HDMI and USB 3.0, a spill-resistant keyboard, and longer battery life; and boasts superior performance that helps offset its slightly heavier weight and higher price, so it's still our Editors' Choice for business laptops.

Thin, light and with one of the best keyboards this side of a desktop PC, the Folio twins -- both the touch and non-touch models -- are easy to use and travel with. They are well equipped and deliver the right balance of performance, manageability and security. While the more powerful, long-lasting and cheaper HD model appeals to the left, more logical side of my brain, the right side dominates here and I lust after the incredibly bright, rich and useful UHD touch model.

HP's EliteBook Folio G1 is an engineering marvel, proving that superportable laptops don't have to sacrifice the elements that make them great work machines. It packs plenty of power, a sharp display, an excellent keyboard and strong security options into a system that's more portable than any other business-class laptop, bar none.

I love the idea of a thin and lightweight laptop, and HP has really nailed the design with the EliteBook Folio. But right now, it’s a compromised machine for what feels like pure design and looks. USB Type-C isn’t mature, and the performance and battery life with the Intel Core M processor inside the Folio just doesn’t keep up with other laptops in this class. It’s a good start to creating a 12-inch MacBook running Windows, but the Folio needs some work behind the scenes before I’d be happy to label it a true MacBook competitor.

The HP EliteBook Folio G1 targets a very specific niche, complementing the even thinner HP Spectre 13 which has a wider appeal. It's obviously an indulgence, but if you're the type of person who is willing to spend a lot in order to have the best possible tools, you should probably give it serious consideration. You'll be free of the usual bulk and weight that a laptop adds to your baggage, and you'll be able to get a lot done sitting in a cramped auditorium, car, or economy class cabin.

The HP Elite Folio looks fantastic thanks to its vegan leather shell, and it impresses in other departments: its keyboard and battery life are both superb, its display is accurate and expansive, and it’s got all of that convertible movement. In too many areas, though, it doesn’t stack up. The ARM-based internals are fine for normal work, but faster rivals are easy to find. The screen is beaten elsewhere, HP’s machine is thicker and heavier than several competitors, and it has a meagre feature set. This laptop looks the part, but it doesn’t have the function to match its form. Unless you want a laptop with more style than substance, you’d be better off elsewhere.

The HP Elite Folio is hands down the best Windows on ARM PC there is. If you compare it to products like the Surface Pro X and the Galaxy Book S, it has the best form factor, the best keyboard, and more. The big problem is that it’s not the best business PC. I love that we’re seeing the market trend toward actually good convertibles. Previously, Windows 10 convertibles were super awkward to use. They were heavy, and they were designed to be laptops. We’re seeing more that were designed with being a tablet in mind. And HP sure pulled out the stops. Along with one of the best keyboards around, the HP Elite Folio packs top-end specs like 16GB RAM and 512GB of storage. It also packs features like HP’s Sure View Reflect privacy display, which is just awesome. Let’s not forget that the battery life is great and it comes with cellular connectivity, up to 5G. I really wish they had it come standard, but it is what it is.

HP's new Elite Folio is powered by the latest generation Snapdragon 8cx processor for Windows 10 laptops. While it is an improvement over earlier ARM based Windows machines I've tested there's still a way's to go before it's a viable Intel/AMD alternative.

If you don't need 64-bit apps like the Adobe Creative Cloud suite and crave an easy-to-carry, highly pen-friendly laptop/tablet combo with 4G or 5G connectivity, sophisticated style, and great battery life, the HP Elite Folio will tempt you—at least until you run smack into its painful price tag. When we reviewed the Lenovo Flex 5G, we said its fast downloads and unkillable battery came at a whopper of a price that relegated the machine to niche appeal, and our Folio costs over $500 more than the Flex. In a world full of first-rate x86 convertibles, the HP offers style and silence at a formidable cost.

However, it doesn’t have a lot of the features that HP’s EliteBooks are known for, such as Sure Click. The Elite Folio does have Sure View, HP’s privacy display, although it’s not on the model that the company sent me. Sure View prevents people from seeing your screen if they look over your shoulder. It does have HP QuickDrop, which lets you send files between your phone and your PC.

The HP EliteBook Folio 13.5 has a high-quality build and is versatile to use. With Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2, it's also one of the few devices that run Windows as an ARM version. Our review will clarify what that means in everyday use.

The Elite Folio is a stylish, super-light convertible ideal for anyone who needs to run basic productivity and communication applications while on the go and is buying on the company tab or has deep pockets. With the 5G model with a 512GB SSD costing nearly £2,500, it’s hardly the most affordable option. The design is very clever and well executed and the build quality is impressive. The 16:10 display doesn’t let the side down, nor does the fine speaker system, while the cleverly housed stylus is a real bonus. And then there’s that battery life. I’ll forgive all the compromises of Windows-on-ARM for a 17-and-a-half-hour run time.

The HP Elite range is usually home to HP’s most business-focused laptops, but the Elite Folio is more of a lifestyle statement piece. It has a synthetic leather outer, an inner pen slot and a designer-style hybrid hinge. For low-key work needs it fits the bill, and ultra-long battery life is dreamy for frequent travellers. However, the HP Elite Folio’s app support is much more limited than that of an Intel or AMD CPU laptop. And while a lot of the key packages are supported, including Photoshop, its performance with intensive image editing, layer-based digital artwork or video editing isn’t really good enough to justify the cost.

That doesn’t mean the Elite Folio is a bad laptop. It could be a great choice for people with light day-to-day tasks who are mostly working in a few tabs at a time, or who do a lot of drawing and note-taking on the move and would use the easel form. Folks who value style and presentation over other characteristics should also give it a look. It’s a gorgeous product to hold and play around with. If I got it for free, I’d bring it everywhere I went. But if you’re considering buying the Folio, you should try the device yourself if you can or (and I know I’m biased here) read a bunch of reviews before you do so. Just make sure you won’t be caught off-guard by the slower performance, and that any apps you use can work as you need them to. Otherwise, you’re looking at a lot of wasted money.

The HP Elite Folio’s remaining sticking point is its price. Say what you will about Microsoft’s Surface Pro X—it uses a slightly slower chip, and the battery life wasn’t nearly what we hoped for. But, depending upon the configuration, it costs half as much as the HP Elite Folio. Even a 14-inch laptop like the $1,400 LG Gram is cheaper, lighter, and faster, though battery life suffers a bit. Our current champion of the thin-and-light category is the HP Spectre x360 14 1Q881AV, a $1,200-$1,400 alternative that folds back into tablet mode for inking.

If the latter factors are your priority, the superb Dell Latitude 9510 offers both 4G/5G options and true 24-hour battery life for US$1,599 at press time, though it also weighs a pound more. Our current pick for the best Windows tablet, the Microsoft Surface Pro 7+, may be priced extravagantly as well—about US$1,650 at press time—but it’s vastly faster than the Elite Folio.

There’s a lot to like about the Elite Folio — its unique design, handy stylus, good battery life and cellular connectivity are great. But I cannot, in good conscience, tell you to shell out $1,889 for a Windows on ARM machine until Microsoft improves the system. Sure, HP isn’t exactly targeting the average consumer since this falls under its "Elite" line of commercial notebooks but in this case that mostly just means the Folio has IT deployment friendly software and security. It’s still too much money for a laptop that starts out with a messy OS, and the Elite Folio doesn’t do enough to overcome that disadvantage.

The quintessential Elite Folio user is an on-the-go busy bee with light day-to-day tasks such as emailing, web browsing and hosting Zoom calls. They get a kick out of all the “oohs and aahs” they get while using the pull-forward feature. On their off days, they enjoy doodling and sketching while the HP device is in easel mode. They love that their pleather-bound laptop, which looks like a large, fancy journal, can hide in plain sight. Most importantly, they don’t have to worry about being tethered to an outlet because the Elite Folio can last for more than 16 hours on a charge.
