Reviews for the HP ElitePad 1000 G2

The HP ElitePad 1000 gives professionals looking for a Windows 8 tablet an IT-friendly solution with a sharp 8-MP camera. But the competing Lenovo ThinkPad 10 provides a better optional keyboard and longer battery life for less money. If you have more money to spend, the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 offers faster performance and a sharper display. Overall, the ElitePad 1000 is a solid contender but falls short of the competition.

It doesn’t get much better than the ElitePad 1000 in a Windows 8.1 business tablet, and kudos to HP for improving what needed to be improved without drastically increasing the weight. It’s fast enough, lasts long enough, and has a capable set of accessories.

The HP ElitePad 1000 G2 is not the sort of tablet you're going to want to get if you want to show off to your friends with fancy new apps and fun, useless features. This is a business machine. HP didn't make a toy here, they made a tool.

If you simply want a usable version of Windows for Internet connectivity, data input and working with Word or Excel, the HP ElitePad 1000 G2 is a solid choice, but for more demanding uses, like editing media, rendering complex visuals, or crunching large data sets, you'll want something more powerful. The Dell Venue 11 Pro (7139) remains our Editors' Choice for business tablets, thanks to its more potent processor and secondary battery, but the HP ElitePad 1000 G2 is still worth considering, due to its many accessory options and solid, all-around performance.

If you need to work with Windows programs and need a totable tablet with almost usable battery life, the ElitePad fulfills the job. As a first-choice device that can serve in a laptop role too, it's rather underpowered and will have you yearning for the power of even a budget laptop.

HP’s take on the business tablet is a pretty one, and we’re reminded of a slicker take of Apple’s first generation iPad, albeit with an operating system that will let you get a lot more done if you’re in the mood for more than just content consumption. We also like the screen and the construction, and if you’re after Windows 8 with 4G, you should definitely look this way, but just beware that the price HP charges here isn’t terribly easy on the wallet, fetching $200 more than Lenovo’s own effort which even manages to outdo HP in some ways.

The ElitePad 1000 G2 is certainly a big upgrade from the ElitePad 900 that went before it, with beefier internals and a superior display, which make it a far more attractive option even before factoring in accessories. However, it's still highly reliant on those expansion jackets, and for every advantage that they bring, more often than not there's an associated disadvantage - whether it's added bulk, cost, the fact that you could lose them and having to carry them around.

The HP ElitePad 1000 G2 is in many ways an impressive tablet. It has good build quality, a responsive touchscreen and a range of useful accessories, even though some are on the expensive side. We think the 4G ElitePad with the 128GB SSD is the better-value model; this may not have as good a screen or be quite as fast as Microsoft's Surface Pro 3, but it's a useful £60 cheaper and gives you the ability to work away from Wi-Fi thanks to its mobile data connection. The Surface Pro 3 is still our choice for a laptop-replacing tablet thanks to its superb display and svelte looks, but the ElitePad 1000 G2 is the choice for business.

The ElitePad is a solid Windows 8.1 Pro tablet prioritising longevity over performance. The 15 hours of battery life is the stand-out feature, making this the Windows 8 tablet with the longest battery life.
