The HP Spectre x360 is nothing short of amazing. It has a stunning design, a bundled stylus, a flawless keyboard and touchpad, a multitouch display that works brilliantly, excellent performance and, best of all, it's a 2-in-1 device that can be converted into a tablet.

The Spectre is one of the best 2-in-1's out there. With its killer look and included stylus, HP did an excellent job fine-tuning a nearly perfect machine. The latest model now has everything you'd expect from a top-of-the-line convertible laptop: a 360-degree hinge, a thin profile, a stylish color scheme, and a sharp-looking display. This laptop checks off a ton of boxes. Though I've fallen head-over-heels for this laptop, there's still a couple of misgivings I'd like to address.

The HP Spectre X360 15 (2017) is a very good, beautiful, 15.6” multi-mode computer that is priced aggressively. At ~$1499, the configuration that we tested may not win the “absolute performance” battle, but it does win the performance/price and the battery/price comparison most of the time. At $1499 the Spectre X360 15 simply offers much value for the money.

A well-equipped HP Spectre x360 with 15.6-inch 4K display, 16GB of RAM, 512GB of storage, and a stylus pen will set you back a highly reasonable $1,530. That's well over $1,000 less than a similarly equipped, slightly more powerful, but not as versatile MacBook Pro, so it's worth thinking: How much do you really prefer macOS over Windows 10?

Now, I'll acknowledge that both the Mac and Dell options have very fast internals that make them well-suited for professional users. But, I think that most people shopping for a laptop will be suitably impressed by the HP's dual-core 7th gen i7 chip. Save for the disappointing trackpad, HP's picked out top-shelf components and put them into a compelling package with the HP Spectre X350 15-inch.

While the 13-inch Spectre x360 isn’t without peers in both the Ultrabook and convertible computing categories, it’s HP’s convertible that is unrivaled when it comes to value. Apple’s similarly configured MacBook Pro 13-inch with Touch Bar, for example, retails for $1,999 but only comes with half the RAM and no touchscreen, while Dell’s touch-enabled XPS 13 notebook only comes with a QHD+ resolution display and retails for $1,949 when configured with similar options to our Spectre review unit. Neither notebooks come with a 360-degree hinge, so you won’t be able to convert the MacBook or XPS into a tablet on the go.

But it’s exactly that – a niche. It does everything well and comes in at a just-about-reasonable price. If you’re after a big, 360-degree-hinge laptop with stylus, the HP Spectre x360 15 is the best on the market right now. Of the laptops we’ve reviewed, the Acer Spin 7 is in the same price bracket but is less powerful; however, it's also smaller and lighter, and so worth a look.

The 2017 HP Spectre X360 has a base price of $1,050 which is good value for something as impressive and beautiful as it is. More premium models, those that carry Intel's Core i7 CPU and bigger storage go for $1,160 to $1,300.

In the beginning of this review, I questioned whether HP might finally have made the perfect laptop. That was sort of a trick question, as there's no such thing. If you're a gamer that's looking for a 15-inch quad-core beast with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080, clearly this isn't for you. Or maybe you're looking at the other end of the spectrum and you want something that's ultra-portable, so maybe you have your eye on the HP Spectre 13 or Apple's MacBook.

Where to land on the Spectre x360 15? This machine is certainly more refined than the 2016 version, which, mind you, was a trim and tidy premium machine itself. This refreshed version showed the performance edge over competing 2-in-1 models that a prime cut of today's mobile components will gain you. That edge is not huge, but it's consistent. The power users that this machine targets will be hard-pressed to find better speed in a 2-in-1 of this size class.

With the latest HP Spectre x360 15, HP has managed to straddle the line between modernity and legacy, not to mention power and panache. This year’s version(s) isn’t any wild reimagining of the firm’s 15-inch 2-in-1 laptop, but rather a major refinement.

The 2-in-1 HP Spectre x360 15 gets a welcome 8th-generation performance bump, a 4K display, a roomy keyboard and impressive battery life, all in a sturdy if somewhat hefty and pricey package. That said, we can't help but cast an envious eye toward the Kaby Lake-G version of the Spectre, which beats this Kaby Lake-R model in just about every department, all for just $120 more.

If you're looking for a machine that can handle heavy photo or video editing, the Spectre 15 is a great choice. With its vivid display, 8th-Gen Intel processor, and 2-in-1 design, it's a really well-rounded laptop. The connectivity options are good too, especially the SD card reader, which comes in handy when you need to offload photos or transfer big files. In addition to connectivity options, the color scheme is really eye-catching as well. While we love the long battery life and zippy performance, we still had a few gripes.

The Spectre x360's performance, sound and vibrant display define opulence in laptop computing. If only its heating issues didn't take away from the experience. For a brighter screen on a cool-to-the-touch laptop, you could save $200 with the $1,199 Lenovo Yoga 720 we tested, though you'll be trading away some speed. But for a top-shelf laptop with first-class style and enough battery life for a long flight with multiple layovers, the Spectre x360 is an excellent option.

There’s two conclusions to be made here. The first is the HP Spectre x360 15 itself. The high-end laptop has been around for two years now, but it took Intel’s Kaby Lake-G to make it sing, delivering plenty of performance to go with the looks.

HP's Spectre x360 15 sets a new performance bar for mainstream laptops, thanks to its Kaby Lake-G CPU. Fortified with Radeon RX Vega discrete graphics, it upends the stereotype that 360-degree convertible laptops can’t deliver top performance.

HP’s Spectre x360 15 (2019) doesn’t use the absolute latest 8th-gen mobile chips, but the six-core Coffee Lake 2.2GHz Core i7-8750H chip is an H-series part, the family of premium, 45-watt Core parts for notebooks. Launched in the second quarter of 2018, it offers excellent performance against rivals powered by quad-core processors. Alternatively, you can opt for a version of the Spectre x360 15 (2019) powered by a 1.8GHz Core i7-8565U, a 15-watt, more modern Amber Lake Core processor that should offer better battery life.

If the more powerful Kaby Lake-G version of the 2018 HP Spectre x360 15 convertible earned itself an Editor’s Choice award, then it’s not too much of a stretch to award the 2019 version one, too. The 2019 version outperforms the 2018 version in most of our benchmarks, including graphics, and offers more battery life as well. In terms of the competition, though, you’ll have to decide: Dell’s XPS 15 9570 is undoubtedly a better value, though HP’s Spectre is simply more attractive. That price tag, though....

There’s no denying that the already nice-looking HP Spectre x360 15 with its angular milled metal body now looks even nicer thanks to that vibrant OLED panel blazing away at the centre. I’m curious to see how well the battery stands up and also how much it costs.

Seeing the OLED and non-OLED versions of the HP Spectre x360 15 side-by-side brought to life just how much of an impact a great screen can have on your everyday computing. True, we don’t yet know the cost impact that such a premium display will have on the asking price, but if you’ve got to have one of the best displays on a laptop, it looks like the HP Spectre x360 15 OLED demands a place on your list.

Okay, the x360 15t touch is pricey, and the looks might not float everyone’s boat. It’s also not for the thin-and-light-at-all-costs crowd. However, in my book, and I’m sure that of many others, it’s nigh-on the perfect laptop. The overall performance is great; the display is second to none; the run time is over ten hours; and it supports Thunderbolt and USB 3.1 gen 2 for super-fast peripheral expansion.

Shining with stellar colors, the AMOLED edition of HP's Spectre x360 15 packs one of the best 4K screens we've seen, though this 2-in-1 is still too heavy for convertible comfort and lacks the graphics gumption for gaming.

The HP Spectre x360's embrace of OLED worked out swimmingly. Not only does this laptop have a vibrant 15.6-inch 4K display, but it has other excellent qualities like strong performance, a comfortable keyboard and gorgeous design. While its battery life is commendable for a 4K display, I still wish it was a little longer, and the fact that you can't alter the configuration is frustrating.

Here we are, at the end of this review. Sadly, we have to part ways with the Spectre x360 15 (15-df0000). It is definitely one of the most finished devices we have reviewed in a while. Although, like many other laptops, some features come at the expense of something else, we found the compromises made with this one to be the most forgivable. As a possible downside, we would only put the heat output from the keyboard area and a slight coil whine when copying or transferring files to the SSD. In addition to that, the device is a little risky to open, since you have to remove both feet, which are made out of a thin rubber, hence easily tareable.
