High-end feeling. With the G8, Huawei has launched a mid-range model on the market that already meets premium-range standards with its very high-quality build. Our report clarifies what compromises have to be made compared with other top models.

On its own, the Huawei GX8 is a decent phone. It has a solid display, good cameras and an alluring body. I wish it lasted longer on a charge and were faster and more responsive. But at $350, the GX8 would be an acceptable choice.

Premium offers like the Mate S and Mate 7 bring the idea to life, but do so with a considerable budget at their disposal. When trying to do the same, only within a tighter budget, Huawei can't quite boast the same level of success. The Huawei G8 is a perfect example - on the surface it would appear to be the perfect combination of Huawei's high style and elegance and a reasonable price point, but in reality, it is plagued by quite a lot of imperfections that tend to leave it at a disadvantage in today's sprawling mid-range market.

I thought the Honor 7 was pretty good for a £250 smartphone when I had a look at it last week, and the G8 looks to offer a similar package for those who prefer a larger-screened smartphone. As ever, the Emotion UI might prove too much for some people, but if that doesn’t rub you up the wrong way, the hardware looks pretty tasty for the money. It will be available to buy in the UK later in September.

It’s not quite as elegant to look at as its launch partner the Mate S, but the Huawei G8 still packs of lot of the same premium features for considerably less money. €399 buys you a dual SIM 4G smartphone will an all-metal body (in dark silver, white or gold), a solid pair of cameras, large battery, a respected processor and the latest available build of Android. It’s in a tough space with some notable competition, but after this initial encounter, there’s certainly potential for a great smartphone here.

Huawei always produces solid low and mid-range devices and the G8 is another that can be added to the roster. The fingerprint scanner is impressive, although with stiff competition from OnePlus and Motorola it may find it difficult to really stand out. There's the promise of decent battery life from the 3000mAh power pack, but you'll have to wait for our full review to see if it manages that. If it can, then you may want to check out the Huawei G8.

If you want the ability for high-end photography on a phone but can’t run to the more-expensive models, then this is a great choice. Even if you don’t use the camera it’s a great phone at just $400. Different variants are available in different markets (more and less expensive models with 4GB and 2GB RAM) but this 3GB model makes for a good sweet spot.

The Huawei GR5 2017 is a cheap low level phone and as such there are a few corners that were cut to make the price point. If you are looking in this price range you no doubt want a phone that is reliable, takes a decent photo and can allow you access to your Facebook. This phone can do that consistently albeit without flair. It just gets the job done.

For $399 you can’t expect a phone that’ll challenge the top models out there. But what you can expect is a practical, effective one. And that’s what the Huawei GR5 2017 model phone is. And its good functionality is nicely enhanced by its ability to take better than average photos.

Huawei GR5 2017 is officially retailing for Php13,990 or about $282 USD. Huawei was able to do it last year. Do you think they have done it again for the GR5 2017? This might just be your next budget-friendly dual-camera capable smartphone.

Huawei is starting off 2017 with a very solid mid-range device. The GR5 2017 (or Honor 6X, or Mate 9 Lite) has a lot to offer. A relatively powerful processor, large battery, excellent endurance and solid camera make this a solid winner for the Chinese company. If you’ve managed to hold off buying a phone during the holidays or are due for an upgrade, you definitely have to check out the GR5 2017. It’s definitely great value for the money.

Like we said earlier, the Huawei GR3 2017 is a shockingly good value proposition, considering its price point. The Kirin 655 octa-core processor is good enough for daily use, the display is excellent for the price point and the battery is able to last an entire day even with heavy use.

With enough light, the GR3 2017 is able to capture plenty of detail. The texture on the fish head as well as the mini-bokeh effect at the rear of the cute kitty is pretty impressive for a phone like the GR3 2017, especially at the price point it sits in.

From our brief time with the GR3 2017, it looks like Huawei has another winner in its hands. At just Php 8,990, it’s 3K less expensive than their already excellent GR5 2017 despite having roughly the same hardware sans the dual camera. We’ll be reviewing this phone in the coming days, so expect our full review to come out later this week or early next week.
