However, those who want to save money can also buy Galaxy Z Fold 3, which is not much worse than the ” 4″ and has already fallen significantly in price. And that’s about it. I believe that you are reading this review more out of curiosity, wondering what kind of beast is this than in order to purchase this model. However, if I am mistaken, write in the comments. And share your impressions if you already use a unique clamshell from Huawei.

By foldable phone standards, the Huawei Mate Xs 2 is priced as expected at R39 999 (RRP). That said, it is still missing a few elements compared to other foldables on the market, such as 5G or the latest silicon. Added to this is an experience that still feels experimental as the unfolded mode is yet to take full advantage of the increase in screen real estate. Whether that requires better software or more developers to build applications to take advantage of the form factor is up for debate, but R40k for an experimental device is not a purchase that many can afford to make. As such, foldables in general could benefit from more iterations, and the Huawei Mate Xs 2 falls in the exact same category. It is not a device for early adopters, but rather risk takers who want to gamble on something different. Like many foldables at the moment, the Huawei Mate Xs 2 still feels too experimental to warrant buying for R40k. Add to this the fact that other foldables are sporting slightly better specifications.

The Mate Xs 2 has undeniably impressive hardware, with a few obvious caveats. The design is sleek and slender, and the outward folding screen is arguably the most exciting foldable form factor around. It’s not the most practical though, and dents and damage to the display feel almost inevitable. Performance is solid even with an older Snapdragon chip, but you’ll have to live without 5G, and put up with surprisingly spotty Bluetooth performance. Capable cameras help make up for that, but you’d expect those given the exorbitant price. As always, it’s the software side where it all breaks down. Things are better than ever before, but at this price it’s almost impossible to justify the compromises involved unless you see this as a secondary device to complement your iOS or Android phone, rather than replace it.

Huawei supplied us with a review unit of the Huawei Mate Xs 2, but didn’t have a say in our opinion, nor did they see this review before you. We’ve been using the device for a couple of weeks before forming an opinion.

We may have said it a few times, but let's reiterate then - the Mate Xs 2 is the form factor you'd imagine a foldable to be and one that makes the most sense for the most people. There's just the matter of the exposed plastic screen that we have to work our way around and all will be well. But as it stands, we're not there yet, and the Mate's supplied case is hardly an ideal solution, some solution as it may be. Samsung's foldables are water-resistant and this one isn't, so there's that too. You can see that our main concern remains durability. The Mate Xs 2 is not without its strong points. The outie design allows for a nearly creaseless display, which looks and feel much better than what the Samsung Folds have. In tablet form the Mate is a joy to use, and in smartphone mode it can make you forget it's a foldable - the size and weight are just right. And it's a properly capable cameraphone too. Ultimately, if we were asked whether we'd go ahead and spend €2,000 of our own money on a Mate Xs 2 to use as a daily driver, the answer would still be no.

Huawei Mate Xs 2 smartphone is not for everybody nor does have appealing flagship features like other flagship features. Despite this, the phone is for those people who desire a foldable phone without the very distracting crease across the middle. Alongside this, the 5G connectivity will take a few years to roll out around the work, and till then it can be considered a great choice. However, the processor and software do feel underwhelming compared to the price tag. Aside from this, there are a few handfuls of downsides that aren’t able to justify the aggressive price point of Mate Xs 2. Instead of that, you can check out the Samsung Galaxy Z fold3 5G which is slightly less and offers a great value for money, while offering an optimized UI experience.

The Huawei Mate Xs 2 is a pretty good folding phone, at least for us in our experience with it in our review of the device for the Philippines. Its outie design gives it dimensions much closer to that of a regular phone while still retaining the flexibility and cool factor of a folding flagship. But that doesn’t hide the fact that the Mate Xs 2 is considerably more expensive than its closest rival while being saddled with the same issues that Huawei’s other flagships have to contend with. It’s better than Samsung’s Galaxy Fold 3 in some respects, but it’s worse too in others. At the end of the day, you’ll really have to think long and hard if the Mate Xs 2 – or really, any folding phone – is worth the money they’re asking for. If you’re willing to ignore some of the niggles we mentioned about the Mate Xs 2, then it’s a pretty good folding phone to be sure.

The Huawei Mate Xs 2 represents a significant upgrade over its predecessor the original Mate Xs with a tougher, slimmer and lighter design along with the customary upgrades to the cameras, processor and battery life. On its own merits, the Huawei Mate Xs 2 is a beautifully designed statement piece of a phone with a unique design and one of the flattest, most gorgeous foldable OLED displays in the market though some teething problems remain. If you’re looking for a non-mainstream foldable alternative that will turn heads, the Huawei Mate Xs 2 fits the bill perfectly.

The Huawei Mate Xs 2 foldable smartphone was announced in April 2022 and the expected price of this phone is $2000 (Rs 1,55,000 in India) approx. As for the primary specs, let’s start with the 7.8-inches Foldable OLED display panel that comes with a 120Hz refresh rate, while there is also a 6.5 inches Folded cover display present. Although, there’s no information about gorilla glass protection. Apart from this, you will also receive a 10.7 MP selfie lens on the front side. As for the main camera, this smartphone offers a triple camera setup that introduces a 50 MP primary, 8MP telephoto, and a 13MP ultrawide camera for better photography. You can record 4K videos at 30fps with both cameras. The Huawei Mate Xs 2 foldable smartphone runs on HarmonyOS 2.0 OS. As for the performance, the smartphone equips a 5nm – Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 4G chipset that goes up to a 2.84 GHz clocking speed. For internals, you will have 8GB/12GB RAM with a 256GB/512GB internal storage option.

The Mate Xs 2 looks almost identical to the original Mate Xs at a glance. However, the foldable has seen a range of improvements over the last few years, with key updates being the hinge, durability, camera quality and speedier fast charging.

Huawei's upgrade to the original Mate Xs does something unique – it folds the wrong (or right) way – depending on your opinion. As for how it fares in the real world, it needs to be good – after all, it costs a huge amount of money. In the flesh, we can't help but be impressed by how thin and light it is – a real design showcase for the brand. Now it's a waiting game to see if it hits our shores.

Ultimately, we’ll have to wait and see how much the Xs 2 costs when it launches in the UK. But if it does end up costing less than its predecessor, then there’s a greater chance that it’ll earn a recommendation. Of course, the biggest downside plaguing Huawei’s handhelds is the frustratingly restrictive software. The hardware might be second-to-none, but if the user experience isn’t up to scratch like recent Huawei releases, then it might be worth avoiding. Huawei’s own App Gallery is steadily improving, but it’ll have to do a lot more to convince prospective consumers when the Mate Xs 2 releases in Europe in June.

Yes, it’s expensive and no it doesn’t have 5G or Google Play, but the Mate Xs 2 is a testament to Huawei’s hardware design and innovation. It’s a stunning example of a folding phone form factor that other manufacturers have generally shied away from.

The Huawei Mate Xs 2 is really an interesting foldable from the company as we found in our quick review for the Philippines, especially since it’s priced below the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 if you do direct conversions for its CNY 9999(~Php 77.7k) price in China. It’s still unknown if the phone will be priced that way once it arrives in the country – we’ll have to see in the next few months. We were told that the Mate Xs 2 will be available in the Philippines in July.

The Huawei Mate XS2 shapes out to be a great foldable device. It feels premium, and Huawei has focused on perfecting the most important aspects of a foldable - the hinge mechanism, the crease in the screen, the durability of the flexible panel, and the functionality of the OS (despite the GMS omission).

Skinny enough when closed, paper-thin when open – the Mate Xs 2 is a seriously desirable folding phone. It’s no thicker in a pocket than a traditional brickphone, yet unfurls to double the screen size. While not running the latest, most powerful silicon, it still seems plenty fast, and appears to take a great photo. In hardware terms, it’s a genuinely appealing take on foldable tech. How well an outward-facing foldable will hold up over time remains to be seen, though. It’s definitely something we’d want to know before splashing out the considerable cash Huawei will be asking for the Mate Xs 2. Still, the firm has a great track record with durability testing, and is confident its design is sturdy enough for daily use. There’s also no avoiding the lack of Google support. You have to jump through a few hoops to get the apps you’re familiar with installed, and even then it’s not always smooth sailing. But with Huawei itself now completely in charge of the operating system, updates should arrive sooner, and software support is getting better all the time.
