The AMD-powered MateBook 16 and its large boxy 3:2 display is perfect for split-screen multitasking, dealing with emails, spreadsheets, coding and video calls (as long as you can get past the terrible angle from the built-in webcam) but the lack of a discrete GPU means it's not quite as an attractive proposition for creatives.

Well made, with long battery life and an excellent 16-inch screen, Huawei's MateBook 16 ticks a lot of boxes. The speakers impress and the keyboard is easy to work with, making this a good all-rounder for both work and after-hours duties. The price is attractive too, especially with Huawei's giveaways. But even with all these positive points, the position of the 720p webcam is a huge issue. If Huawei were to reposition this, and also upgrade the resolution, it could have a real winner on its hands. As it is, anyone who needs to do regular video calling for work or for leisure should probably look elsewhere, or rely on an external camera.

The Huawei MateBook 16 offers amazing build quality and a superb screen that makes every task easier. Running almost silent, the battery will happily see you through a work day without any issues. That big screen is also useful for having multiple browsers open at once, or just making Netflix shows more dramatic. However, you may have trouble getting your hands on the MateBook 16 depending on where you live, and we can confidently say that the oddly placed webcam isn’t doing anyone any favours.

Unfortunately availability of the Huawei MateBook 16 is rather limited at the moment. You can pick it up from European retailers for around €1,100, which at the time of writing is the equivalent of approximately £935 or $1,245. At that price, the laptop is actually at a very respectable point on the value-for-money spectrum, though whether you're going to be able to get it at that price is another matter. It's a shame that the Huawei MateBook 16 and many other Huawei devices are so hard to get in the UK and the US, because on the whole they're decent pieces of hardware that are worth putting on your shortlist. They can be imported via the web but you need to make sure you're dealing with a reputable retailer, and you'll need to pay over the odds, most of the time. You'll probably need to supply your own power cable too. A few niggles aside, we like the design and the fit and finish of the Huawei MateBook 16, and it feels like a premium device when you're using it. The battery life might not be spectacular, but the performance is very good, and in general it's a portable computer that's a pleasure to use.

While the MateBook 16 seems like a notebook with the potential to have widespread appeal, the folks I’d most recommend it to are largely still Huawei superfans. The MateBook’s compatibility with other Huawei products is something that nothing from Apple or Asus can offer. I can see that benefit outweighing the odd drawbacks for people that already own other Huawei devices. For everyone else, I think the MateBook could be a fine purchase for a general work driver, but you can get other laptops with most of the same benefits and without the weirdness surrounding the webcam, speakers, and drive. Even if MacBook Pros are outside your price range, many Ryzen devices have similar performance and battery life to the MateBook, as well as a functional webcam and microphones. The MacBook Air is basically there as well (and as bad as its webcam is, I’ll take that over a nostril shot any day). Basically, I think you have to really, really want the 16-inch, 3:2 screen for the MateBook to have a shot.

The Huawei MateBook 16 (official page) is a classy computer that would be an excellent choice for office productivity and light creativity users who want a large display. I like the great industrial design and build quality. The laptop is very agreeable to use, even if you work many hours with it daily. From a specifications/price standpoint, there are potent competitors such as the Dell Inspiron 16, Lenovo’s Legion 5i, or the Acer Predator Triton 300 SE. But in this style of CNC-aluminum chassis, the MacBook 16 could be an alternative for those willing to switch over to macOS and pay much more. The Huawei MateBook 16 retails for 1199 Euros (~$1385), nearly half the cost of the cheapest MacBook 16 ($2499). That’s a massive difference in value for the use case we’ve described. This laptop could be very interesting for Creative users who mostly require high CPU performance (Cinebench) because the Ryzen 7 5800H CPU can compete with Intel’s Core i7-11800H at a significantly lower price. Having excellent CPU performance and long battery life is a rare combo.

At the end of the day, the Huawei MateBook 16 is a truly great laptop in more ways than one. It has a solid aluminum design, a beautiful and sharp display, and great performance all around along with fantastic battery life. If you happen to be in the Huawei ecosystem, it’s also a great complement to your tablet or phone, and it’s one of the more integrated experiences you can get on Windows. Taking just that into consideration, the asking price of $1,150 (plus tax) isn’t that bad. You do get a great laptop for that price, and this will serve you well for a long time. But you have to ask yourself about the important of things like the webcam in the times that we live in today. With remote and hybrid work more common than ever, a bad webcam is enough to make a whole laptop bad for some people, and the MateBook 16 has a terrible webcam. I also think the form factor and overall design of the MateBook 16 are pretty boring, but those are very subjective areas, and it all depends on what you need. You should also consider what your specific workload needs are.

After full and in-depth testing of the new Huawei Matebook 16 laptop model, I was left with a very positive impression. The new version of the device showed itself on the positive side, both in terms of build quality and in terms of the materials used. I did not reveal any special complaints during my testing. I would also like to note that the device did not get very hot and noisy during my tests in games or synthetic tests. This is also a good thing when choosing a powerful and efficient laptop. In addition, I liked the large 16-inch screen with an IPS matrix and 90% of the screen area occupied. That is, there were very minimal frames around the screen. Also, the laptop stands out for its very strong performance, high battery life and a responsive keyboard and touchpad. But there are also disadvantages, and to them I can attribute this not the best location of the front camera. You can also highlight the maximum brightness value of 280 nits and this brightness will be small, as for outdoor work.

For comparison, at Dell the similar device is the Inspiron 16. Around the same price, it offers the Intel Core i7-11800H, a 16:10 slightly higher resolution screen, same DRAM/storage, similar battery, TB4, full keyboard, but is also slightly thicker for the same weight, and doesn’t have dual front-facing speakers. Lenovo’s IdeaPad Creator 5 16 has the Ryzen 5 5600H, 1600p display, same DRAM/Storage, comes with a GTX1650, and a slightly smaller battery, at around 10% higher cost. This market is bigger than you might think, with most of the major players having at least one offering around this price, and the minutiae come down to exact features vs favoring one brand over another. Overall, it isn’t the device for the person that I am – it’s just a bit too physically big, and ultimately I can feel the difference between lugging a 2 kg device around a trade show compared to a 1.5 kg device. But for those that it fits, the building blocks are there for a very easy-to-use ecosystem. I wait for a version where Huawei ditches that camera though.

The Huawei MateBook 16 is a well-designed notebook with enough performance, battery life, and high-end features to suit those looking for a professional-grade laptop. Combined with a tall 3:2 aspect ratio, this laptop is a joy to use for work as well as play. With fast USB-C charging, Wi-Fi 6 on board, and Windows 11 supported too, this is a future-proof purchase that will last years to come. Although I’m not sure that Huawei’s Multi-screen Collaboration suite is quite the game-changer the company thinks it is. I’m equally unconvinced the display accuracy, single 512GB SSD capacity, and battery life are quite suited to the creative users that Huawei has in mind for the MateBook 16. Running the laptop at full tilt drains the battery just a little too quickly but performance is capped quite heavily when optimizing for battery life. Likewise, the lack of dedicated GPU means the MateBook 16 isn’t great for gaming. Taking a step back to look at the whole picture, Huawei’s MateBook 16 offers a reasonable value proposition.

There’s a lot to love about the MateBook 16; it boasts a sleek design with a stunning 16in IPS display with some of the slimmest bezels on the market, and it’s bright too. However, it’s the 3:2 aspect ratio that steals the show, offering much more screen real estate than 16:9 alternatives, a real boon for workers, multi-taskers and those that spend their time analysing data. The only downside is that it’s not suited to watching movies, with the boxy aspect ratio leaving large black bars atop and below the content you’re watching. The laptop is AMD-powered, sporting either the latest Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7 alongside a generous 16GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD storage, with more than enough power to handle split-screen multitasking, word processing and even image editing. However, the lack of a dedicated GPU means it isn't the strongest contender when it comes to advanced graphic design, video editing or hardcore gaming. If you do need something with a little more graphical oomph, there are better options in our gaming laptop chart.

I haven’t yet run our full set of benchmark tests on the MateBook 16, but the early signs are that this is a laptop to be reckoned with. It’s a well-made machine with a fabulous display, enough power for workstation tasks, if not gaming, and a price that puts it within reach of most people. It’s a touch heavy and Huawei’s in-keyboard pop-up webcam remains bafflingly in place, yet if you’re looking for a laptop with a big display and a bit more power than average, the Huawei MateBook 16 well and truly delivers.

As the new product with the largest screen in the Huawei MateBook series product matrix, Huawei MateBook 16 is undoubtedly born to pursue higher productivity. The larger screen brings more freedom to play; whether it is engaged in artistic creation, text editing, or even online course learning, the efficiency can be greatly improved. The large screen has higher productivity. Huawei MateBook 16 is not a pure-play concept, and its hardware configuration does give enough confidence that it can play a role in improving user efficiency. With the addition of HarmonyOS 2, the multi-screen collaboration and intelligent experience of the Huawei MateBook series are also expected to continue to evolve. In addition to the interconnection with mobile phones, headsets, and tablets, there may be more and more new device interconnections and new functions in the future.
