The MateBook E is the perfect Windows tablet: a device with enough performance to easily perform productivity tasks, a display big enough to enjoy media on and a good bundled keyboard. Much the same can of course be said of Microsoft’s Surface Pro 8 but that is bigger and heavier and will set you back £300 more once you pay the extra for the keyboard cover. The mediocre battery life and solitary USB-C port do count against it but these are small concerns for such a device. Otherwise, it’s a fantastic 2-in-1 and the most balanced Windows tablet on the market.

Overall, there is not much to fault about the Huawei MateBook E. One complaint we had is that the initial power up to the OS takes approximately 10 seconds. But when it is in sleep mode, getting to the screen is almost instant. Priced at S$1,998, the Huawei MateBook E is available in Nebula Gray and comes with the Smart Magnetic Keyboard and Huawei M-Pencil (second generation) that allows you to sketch, write or take notes conveniently.

This tablet also has monster speakers that are liable to rip your head off if you accidentally start playing something at max volume. While the treble and upper mids can be a little abrasive with certain content when the volume is high, the sheer scale of the Huawei MateBook E’s audio impresses, as does the weight of the bass. These speakers make those of the average 3kg gaming laptop seem pretty pathetic. The Huawei MateBook E hits highs with superb colour reproduction and great portability, but short battery life doesn’t cut it as a tablet, and performance can’t compete with the Microsoft Surface Pro 8.

The MateBook E is an exciting alternative to more established 2-in-1s, with a stunning OLED display and practical keyboard cover included in the price. Both perform well in a variety of scenarios, despite some occasional quirks and frustrations. Performance is solid, at least from the Core i5 model I tested. Alongside an impressive keyboard, there’s also full compatibility with a very capable stylus and a great video calling experience. But battery life is a big disappointment here, with MateBook E consistently struggling to make it through a full working day. Decent charging speeds help soften the blow, but it means you’ll never want to be far from a power source. That’s a real shame, as the device ticks so many boxes for prospective buyers. Hopefully, Huawei can iron out the handful of shortcomings in the next-gen MateBook E, as it has a lot of potential.

On the whole, the Matebook E accomplishes its goal of marrying multimedia, creativity, and office capabilities fairly well. It offers robust performance, a great display, and accessory support that’s better than most. Just don’t stray too far from a plug socket, or make sure to bring a powerful battery pack with you. Even so, between the flat keyboard, no built-in kickstand, and various Huawei integration icons dotted around the UI, there are a few other small issues. However, these can be forgiven once we look at the price. If you’re in the market for a reasonably affordable 2-in-1 to double-up as a multimedia tablet and a laptop for work, the Matebook E is worth a look at, albeit with a few caveats. The main one to consider is that you can’t rely on the Huawei Matebook E to take you through a whole workday on a single charge, and you’ll have to spring for the keyboard separately if you buy the Core i3 model.

So, is the Huawei MateBook E worth the asking price? Well, if you’re not looking to replace your extremely powerful laptop, then yes, it certainly is. The MateBook E has a lot of positives. It’s very slim, looks great, has a good display, really good performance, and excellent sound. You can even use these cameras and not be shocked at how bad they are, which is a rarity for devices of this type. The included magnetic keyboard/case is an excellent addition too, though the touchpad is not great. The battery life, on the other hand, is not great. That is something you should definitely note if you’re planning to get this. If you plan on using it as a multimedia consumption device, this device will likely serve you well for years to come. It’s up to you, but there’s a reason why it costs considerably less than ultrabooks, it’s in a category of its own, and that’s a good thing.

Huawei’s done some great stuff with the MateBook E. For starters, it’s made a very portable Windows tablet that can do pretty much everything a basic laptop or desktop can. It’s also coupled that functionality with an excellent screen that looks fantastic when watching or even gaming on, and there are some really considered software optimisations too. While the tablet’s price to performance ratio isn’t going to give you bang for buck, you can still run basic games on it, and some newer 3D titles with dialled back graphics settings. Starting at £599, the MateBook E is a premium tablet, and when you climb up to the £999 i5 version we reviewed, you might ask yourself – why don’t I just get an iPad? Windows still has some unique advantages over iPadOS – extended display support, easy to manage file handling, desktop-grade apps like Photoshop to name a few. What’s more, Huawei actually undercuts or competes head-on with most Surface models. We’d go so far as to say the MateBook E is one of the best Windows tablets you can get right now, and the best for a user who values portability above all else.

Even if you don't go all-in on the Huawei ecosystem – and many outside China still baulk at the company's smartphones due to their lack of Google Mobile Services – the MateBook E is an impressive tablet-first 2-in-1 laptop. The OLED screen is the star, but it's also well built, with capable cameras, mics and speakers, while the M-Pencil stylus is useful and well implemented. Although performance is on a par with the competition, battery life could be better, and a second on-board USB-C/Thunderbolt 4 port would be welcome. It's also a pity that the tablet, once detached from the keyboard unit, has no way of standing up on its own. What does stand up is the pricing compared to Microsoft's Surface Pro 8. Our review configuration (Core i5, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, Smart Magnetic Keyboard, M-Pencil stylus) costs €1,199 in Germany. On Microsoft's German website, the nearest equivalent configuration we can find (Core i5, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, Surface Pro Keyboard and Surface Slim Pen 2) costs €1,659.

One of the things I liked the most about the HUAWEI MateBook E was definitely the OLED display. It looks absolutely stunning, and it makes Windows 11 feel that much more lively. It’s truly a different effect when you see colors shining through the Mica material on an OLED display compared to an LCD. The speakers were also great and help make this a fantastic device to consume media on. I was very displeased with the touchpad, though, as it just feels bad to use. I always want to have my mouse with me when I use this as a laptop. I was also a bit disappointed that I can’t use my external monitor with it since it makes typing insufferable.

I like a lot of things about the Huawei MateBook E, from the sleek design to the really nice OLED display. If battery life and performance match up then could well be a strong Surface Pro 8 rival.

Huawei’s second-generation M-Pencil is also supported and not as an afterthought: it magnetically sticks to the device and wirelessly charges when not in use. When you're using it, it should supply up to ten hours of battery life, and be a valuable extra with 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity and just 2ms of latency. Other pertinent details: the MateBook E has a fingerprint reader on the power button for added security, boasts a 3D cooling system with graphene heat dissipation and supports 65W charging via a dedicated USB-C port. All in all, it sounds like a compelling package, assuming the price and unspecified internals are all up to snuff. Whether it’s enough to knock the Surface Pro off its perch is another matter entirely, of course.
