Reviews for the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra

Phone photographers will be genuinely impressed by the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra. It has a stunning set of sensors and image processing that rivals any of the flagships I’ve tested this year. This had the biggest influence on my star rating, which given the criticisms I’ve outlined below, shows just how good a cameraphone this is. Yet as much as I also like its beautiful display, slick styling and large battery, a few major stumbles kill any hope of mainstream appeal – at least here in the West. An uncompetitive chipset, missing 5G support and lack of Google services hobble what’s otherwise a fantastic handset. A Xiaomi 14 Ultra can be had for less cash, while also delivering more power, equally outstanding cameras, and access to the Play Store without needing any hacky workarounds. It’s a different story in China, where Pura 70 Ultra is doing big business – but for everyone else, this simply isn’t as complete a package as you’ll find from its rivals.

Should you buy the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra? Well… there are a lot of factors that you should consider here. This is a great phone, there’s no doubt about that. It has an excellent camera performance, some of the best. It’s immensely comfortable to hold and use, and it has a great display too. The software is very optimized, plus it’s the most versatile phone on the planet when it comes to charging. There are a lot of benefits here. You need to consider the elephant in the room, though, apps. AppGallery grew so much, but chances are you’ll still have to rely on app repositories, GBox, and Aurora Store. If that’s not a problem for you, you can get pretty much any app running on the phone. Still, the experience is not as streamlined as it would be if Google Services came pre-installed. This is not a phone for everyone, but if you’re willing to make a couple of sacrifices along the way, it is a very compelling device.

If you’re contemplating a modern HUAWEI smartphone, you hopefully know what you’re getting into by now. The ongoing US trade embargo means that Google apps remain a no-go (without workarounds), which might suit some people. However, swapping Big G for HUAWEI isn’t exactly a privacy-conscious move. In global markets, the Pura 70 Ultra still runs EMUI (based on the increasingly outdated Android 12) rather than HUAWEI’s Harmony OS spin-off, which you’ll find in China. If you’ve used a P series flagship — now rebranded to Pura — in recent years, you’ll be instantly familiar with the heavily iOS-inspired skin, unholy level of bloatware, and various Google-app replacements. I could install a good portion of my regularly used Android apps, but certainly not all of them. For example, the ecosystem split means that I couldn’t use any of my banking apps on the phone for a start.

The Huawei Pura 70 Ultra is a phenomenal phone if you want to capture professional photos and videos. Apart from offering a stunning camera setup and retractable sensor, the phone doesn’t have anything special to sell. However, one might consider the unique design as a plus point. But still, the phone has several shortcomings whether you look at the hardware or performance. Hopefully, the display experience isn’t disappointing since you are getting an LTPO OLED display. The software end has improved a lot compared to the previous interface setting. There are more customization options available in the UI. Even though the phone is offering something new to the market, it’s a flashy phone with average specs.

The Huawei Pura 70 Ultra is indeed the best Huawei can offer - a dynamic high-res OLED screen, an excellent design and build, good speakers, super-fast charging options, powerful OS, and innovative camera solutions with flagship sensors and lenses. We liked almost everything on this phone, and the photo quality turned out impressive across the board. On the other hand, the lack of 5G, GMS and the most recent Android version is not something that can be easily forgotten. Then comes the mediocre video quality, which is a big mishap for one of the most expensive cameraphones out there. The Pura 70 Ultra might sell well in its home Chinese market, but elsewhere, it's a mere showcase device of Huawei technical prowess in the face of US sanctions. Outside of China, the expensive Pura 70 Ultra will attract only consumers looking for a high-end alternative to Android and iOS. And by the looks of it, this makes it an incredibly niche product.

The Huawei Pura 70 Ultra is a tough sell. As a camera phone, it is great; the one inch sensor produces impressive shots both in broad daylight and in more murky and dark environments. What the Huawei Pura lacks is current hardware and more popular software, and we just can't look the other way. Other camera phones, such as the Xiaomi 14 Ultra or the Honor Magic 6 Pro, will fare much better in this competitive market, as they offer the latest hardware and full GMS support. The asking price of 1,500 euros doesn't work in Huawei's favor either. At the end of the day, only hardcore Huawei fans and people who want to be outside the mainstream ecosystems, would probably consider getting this phone.

Overall, the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra is a great phone, especially if you love capturing content, whether it be through photos or videos with an impressive camera setup. You have an equally beautiful display to review everything you have taken. When you are not creating content though, you can use the phone to play your favorite games, watch videos, or surf the internet without worrying about performance issues. Not to mention it looks good too, and it has a strong battery life with fast charging capabilities. The only downside is that you do not have 5G connectivity, and will be limited to just 4G LTE. At the same time, there is still the issue with the lack of native Google support. This means that some apps will have to be run through GBox or users will have to find a similar APK on the net.

The Huawei Pura 70 Ultra is a very interesting phone. For the most part, I’ve loved using it. The cameras are exceptional, the display is gorgeous and the design is second to none. However, the older processor architecture, and the sheer amount of hassle required to get Google service working make this phone a tough sell for Western customers. Especially when you consider the price. At €1499, it’s one of the priciest flagships around. If you genuinely only care about camera performance, then it’s still worth considering. The cameras really are that good. However, most people would be better off opting for a phone like the Honor Magic 6 Pro or Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, both of which combine excellent camera systems with speedy performance and full Google support.

The Huawei Pura 70 Ultra delivered outstanding performances across all areas in the DXOMARK Camera tests, securing itself the top position in our ranking. Still image results were exceptional across all camera modules, resulting in top scores not only for photo but also for zoom wide and tele. The camera’s ability to balance detail retention and noise reduction was impressive, and images showed precise exposure and a wide dynamic range, as well as pleasant colors. Thanks to its large main camera sensor and careful tuning, the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra showed strong improvements in texture and noise compared to its predecessors. Good detail and exposure were maintained, even when shooting in low light. The device showed a particular ability to deliver images with natural skin-tone rendering and an accurate white balance even in very complex lighting conditions such as low light.

The Huawei Pura 70 Ultra is a formidable cameraphone, just like the Huawei Pxx phones before it. Plus, it has an impressive design and build, an excellent display, superb charging capabilities, flagship-grade speakers, and whatnot. What it doesn't have is the Snapdragon 8 Gen performance and 5G connectivity outside China. It also doesn't have Google's Mobile Services, though this has not been that much of an issue since the existence of Gbox and the alternatives. We can see Huawei fans getting this phone in a heartbeat because it is shaping up to be that good. But it will be a tough job to convince anyone that is not after Huawei's camera experience, not outside its homeland at least. But does it matter anyway? Huawei is expecting to ship over 10 million Pura 70 units, most of them in China, which is plenty enough to keep it going.

The Huawei Pura 70 Ultra is a beautifully designed phone with an extremely promising camera system, a lovely display and extremely fast charging. However, the usual Huawei caveats apply, and the lack of Google services and an outdated processor mean that the mainstream appeal is severely limited. I need to test further to see what it’s like to live with, but as of now, I can tell you that I’m enjoying it, especially the camera. There’s a lot of potential here that I’m excited to learn about.

The Huawei Pura 70 Ultra is the newest in Huawei's flagship phone series. Huawei's P series has always been known for its camera prowess, and this new version is no different, with a 1-inch sensor with a variable aperture, and an excellent telemacro camera that can produce stunning macro shots. But the coolest trick may be the ultra fast shutter which can capture motions in standstill.

Reviewing the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra, one of the absolute best camera phones in 2024 with impressive pro photo abilities. This full tour of the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra shows off the EMUI features and hardware ahead of the global release - but are you tempted, at a whopping 1499 Euros? If your priority is that camera tech, you're going to like this smartphone. A lot. It's up there with the Xiaomi 14 Ultra for natural looking everyday shots, including some tasty HDR photos. But the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra is on another level for action snaps, capturing crisp images even when your subject is booking it. Of course it's EMUI, not Android, so you'll have to endure a lack of Google and Play Store action - even on the global model. The Huawei Pura 70 Ultra doesn't offer the same app support as rivals, and you'll be dependent on APKs. Battery life is excellent however and the performance is certainly good enough for swift everyday use. And yes, the less said about the games on the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra, the better.

Twelve years constitute a period. After 12 years of development, the P series has now reached a new stage. The upgrade of the P series to Huawei’s Pura series is a perfect summary of the P series in the past 12 years. It is also a key move for the P series to start again with a new attitude and move to a new height. As Huawei’s first Ultra flagship, the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra still has many constraints in the choice of hardware supply, but it has not affected Huawei’s firm confidence in its brand. Even though the price was raised to nearly 10,000 yuan, without a press conference, the new phone was sold out in just one minute after it went on sale online, and long queues reappeared in many offline Huawei stores. Putting aside this “overwhelming popularity” and returning to the product itself, how is Huawei Pura 70 Ultra? After some experience, we believe that this is a new generation Huawei flagship that is enough to satisfy everyone but is not perfect.
