Tough shell! The LG G6 marks the end of the modular smartphone from the Korean manufacturer. Instead, we get a robust chassis, new screen ratio, improved cameras, and a bigger battery. Sounds like a good combination. Update: facial recognition is now available.

Ditching the modular design of last year’s G5 was the correct move by LG – it was handled poorly, mis-communicated and failed miserably. With the G6, LG has a phone that I can see being much more successful.

From a purely critical standpoint the LG G6, whichever way you slice it, just isn’t as good or as impressive as its nearest and dearest peers and this fact alone makes it kind of hard to really fall in love with. This is a real shame too because for the last few years LG has consistantly WOWed me with its flagships, its innovations and its attempts at doing things differently.

Four months ago I gave the G6 a 4.8/5 in my full review. Would I still give it such a high score today? The LG G6 is not a perfect phone (it never was). The more you use a device the more flaws you will find. If I had to give the G6 a new score, I would drop it down to a very respectable 4.5/5. The sluggish camera and bad battery life are my biggest issues today.

The LG G6 is no doubt a striking smartphone. Metal and glass shimmer while the huge 18:9 screen is impressively brought to life with the improved software and its rounded corner design. It is a more refined smartphone than both the G4 and G5, and should appeal to a broader audience – even if its features aren’t the same globally.

The G6 is the phone LG needs. It’s not quite as gorgeous as the Samsung Galaxy S8 and it doesn’t have the excellent camera of the HTC U11, but LG has finally made a gimmick free phone that ticks a lot of boxes.

We really need to know the prices of the LG Q6 models to see how it competes with it's bigger brother. The price will need to be fairly cheap to make it worth losing various key features as the G6 is already available for a lot less than the £649 launch figure.

So, is it a good buy now that it’s July? We absolutely think so. One could argue the point that you could get the OnePlus 5 that rocks a Snapdragon 835 with 6GB of RAM for a more affordable price, but that device comes with a few caveats of its own. If you’re into owning a device with the most beastly specs available, we won’t convince you otherwise; it is your hard-earned cash after all. If you are, however, looking for one of the best multimedia experiences on a smartphone, the LG G6 can definitely provide you with that. Now that LG’s flagship has been priced lower, it certainly merits more consideration its gotten in the past.

The LG G6 features a dual-camera setup with two 13Mp sensors coupled to either an f/1.8 image-stabilized lens for its primary camera, or to a second f/2.4 wide-angle lens, without autofocus, as an alternative option. Tested using the primary camera, the LG G6 achieves an overall DxOMark Mobile score of 84 points and performs better for stills, securing a Photo sub-score of 85 points.

For those who purchase phones outright, it’s also nice to see the LG G6 currently retailing on Amazon for around $150 less than the Galaxy S8. I feel the asking price of $550 is about right for the LG G6 and its position in the market. Were it more expensive, in the traditional $650 range, I’d be questioning why LG had priced it so high.

The LG G6 is a great smartphone for the following reasons. The smartphone doesn’t feel weird while holding in palm or carrying inside the pocket. Performance of the device is fantastic and may never trouble you. If you’re a person who frequently capture videos and photographs, LG G6 could be the perfect companion for you. The LG G6's secondary camera offers the convenience and flexibility of a super wide-angle at the press of a button and its manual controls, especially in video mode, should satisfy even the most demanding users. To sum up, LG has finally built up a great phone as compared to its predecessor and has added some interesting features. The star of the show is the new LG FullVision Display, though it is still at niche stage and with Samsung following the suite, we believe that the new aspect ratio might become a norm in 2018. However, using an older processor has definitely put the smartphone on the back foot. No doubt, this is probably one of the best devices from LG, but when compared to the competition, it becomes a tough job for G6 to compete with other flagship devices. If the company drops the price of LG G6, which it often do, then it would become a far more interesting proposition.

It has a handsome design, rock solid build and is a very good performer. But for many people, the real ace up the G6’s sleeve as far as it comes to the Galaxy S8 might be its significantly lower price tag of Rs 51,990 – the S8 in India starts at 57,900 and in India, cannot claim to have a newer Snapdragon chip either. In fact, as this is being written, the G6 is available for as little as Rs 41,990 (or $499 unlocked in the US), which makes it perhaps the most attractive “premium flagship” out there (in terms of flat out performance, we would rank it ahead of the OnePlus 3T, which is the only device with a Snapdragon 821 chip at a lower price).

So, all things considered my second experience with the LG G6 was far and away better than the first one. Sure there are still some things I did not like about it but what phone is perfect? Not even the Pixel can claim that in my opinion. The LG G6 is revolutionary in that it is the first 18:9 ratio display but I can’t help feeling that LG have missed a great opportunity to hit the ball out of the park.

The LG G6 looks the part and is ergonomic to handle, the camera is flagship grade and performance doesn’t falter that easy. But at the same time, the advent of Snapdragon 835 phones (like, perhaps, OnePlus 5 and Pixel 2) as we move through 2017 might weigh heavily on the G6. You can buy it you are looking for a good 18:9 display phone but don’t want to stretch your budget by another 18,000 INR for Galaxy S8 and S8+.

The superb feel in the hand, the good wide angle camera, the HDR display, the component choices (including that 3.5mm jack and the waterproofing), the light skin on top of Android, the use of Google Assistant, and good battery life, all drive me to recommend the G6 as perhaps the pick of the current 2017 crop. It’s not the flashiest nor the most advertised, and there are no outstanding USPs, but I predict that more people will be happier with the G6 over the course of a typical two year contract than with any of the other new fare.

You’ll probably see a lot of reviews about the dual-screen capabilities and the change to the aspect ration. These are important because we (and I mean the royal smartphone-following and smartphone-making “we”) have reached a point where smartphones are so good, so very, very good that it takes some balls to break from the norm. Here LG have notched the resolution of one of those rear camera lenses down to make them both match.

The LG G6 represents the refinement of ideas drawn from the company’s previous flagships. It has the dual-camera setup from the G5 and V20, but now, both sensors are of equal resolution. That said, it has a number of shortcomings too. It isn't as drop dead gorgeous to behold as the Galaxy S8, owing to a less ‘wow' design and a less vibrant screen. The cameras are also worse at the basics compared to much of the competition and, if you're in the UK, you'll likely be picking it up with 32GB storage, while most flagships worth their salt are shipping with 64GB as standard these days.

The LG G6 ships with a larger-than-normal 3300mAh battery. This is above the Samsung Galaxy S8 and most other flagship devices, which tend to go for 3000mAh cells. We found that during general usage, the LG G6 could almost reach two days if you're playing it safe. Moderate use would see the device get a solid days use with a bit to spare. In our draining battery test at 50% brightness, it lost 20% capacity over 78 minutes. By our calculations, this gives 6-and-a-half hours of on-screen time. This is a very good result and should get through the handset through a solid day of use. AnTuTu gave the battery a score of 7138, which is up there with the best.

LG gets some things right with the G6 — you get an absolutely stunning display and a masterful design, but they drop the ball in many other areas. This is supposed to be LG’s flagship phone for the year, but it feels like it’s just LG playing catch up. We get the same low-quality camera setup that dates back all the way to the LG G5. There’s some serious quality problems with it, none of which LG has even addressed yet. You also don’t get the latest Snapdragon 835 processor or the latest Bluetooth version. What would I improve to make the phone even better? I’d like a slightly bigger battery and I would also prefer AMOLED over LCD, but that’s just a personal preference. Other than that, there’s really not much I would change. The G6 is a solid phone. Right now the G6 is expensive, retailing for $650 to $719 at the major carriers (and even higher unlocked), though you do get that tempting free Google Home bundle promotion with it, bringing the value proposition up considerably. That's if you're in the market for both types of devices. Could it be possible that, down the line, a price concession comes to the LG G6? That's pure speculation and we'll have to see as the competitive landscape unfolds in the coming weeks. Either way, after a notable misstep with the G5, the G6 returns LG back to smartphone design prominence. People familiar with the brand will probably love the G6. 2017 is shaping up to be a fantastic year for Android smartphones. With Samsung, Apple, Huawei and others all expected to bring the very best they have this year, the G6 needed to be a success. Luckily, it does just this, and by setting a new standard for flagships in 2017, LG has laid down a marker that other OEMs need to equal or surpass. Simply put, LG’s G6 represents the future of what we should expect from a flagship smartphone.

When I look back on many of the gimmicks LG has tried to use to sell smartphones over the years, the most striking thing about the G6 is how this time the focus is on just making a good, balanced phone that does most thing really well, and a few things. As much as you could argue that the taller display is indeed a gimmick, LG's doing enough with it that it's not just there for the sake of it.

It’s a solid black rectangle with the same high-end specs we expect of flagship phones and an excellent camera. There are certainly no killer flaws in the G6, beyond a certain lack of individual personality. If you want a big screen without the hassle of a giant-sized phone body, however, this is almost certainly the phone you’re looking for.

LG stalwarts will gripe that the battery is no longer removable, but most users won’t care. And the addition of IP68 water resistance is good tradeoff, as is support for Qi and PMA wireless charging. (As long as you buy a U.S. model, anyway. Wireless charging is limited to models sold in the States, while quad-DAC is only on the Korea model, and the 64GB variant is exclusive to a handful of Asian countries.)

As for the bend test, the LG G6 proves to be a very sturdy phone that's practically unbendable. Bending the phone from the back or from the front shows almost zero flex. This means that overall, there is no question as to how durable the LG G6 is. It survives scratches, burns and even strong bends.

As mentioned above, the LG G6's aspect ratio can fit two typical 1:1 aspect ratio photos on the display, making it friendly for Instagram and Snapchat. Users can take a photo, and have it below as a preview while they frame the next shot. You can toggle between normal and wide angle lenses in between the shots, making it convenient to check every incoming shot without having to leave the camera app.

All in all, compromise is probably the name of the LG G6’s game. While it splurged on the display, the waterproofing and the cameras, it chose to be less generous in other aspects. Some through no fault of its own, like the Snapdragon 835 situation, while others, like Quad DAC and wireless charging, it decided based on keeping costs low.

As I said before, you can’t even compare the G6 to last year’s G5. It’s as if they were made by two entirely different companies. LG is closer than ever to being a real threat to Samsung. The G6 may not be as experimental or quirky as its G5 predecessor, but that's not a bad thing. Other than having an "older" processor, it can rival the S8 spec-by-spec because it's playing it safe.

Like we said above, we’re keeping an open mind until the full review is complete, but color us impressed. LG has put together a very solid, if unspectacular device. I think if Samsung wasn’t releasing the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus at the same time, people would be all over the G6. The build quality is very good, the software seems to have taken steps forward, and there are a lot of other little improvements.

The G6 is LG's best phone. It's LG's best turn at design, best example of engineering as an art form, best in raw performance, and best in delivering a good experience across the board. It has so few weaknesses I can hardly think what they might be. You just might fall in love with the phone at first sight. The glass-and-metal chassis is classy and assembled brilliantly. It's a fine size and the screen will surely push all your buttons with eye-popping visuals. Water resistance has become a table-stakes feature for flagship phones and the G6 has it covered. I appreciate the 3.5mm headphone jack, USB-C port, wireless charging, and memory card support. Wireless performance was great, voice call quality is very good, and battery life is right where it needs to be.

LG's marketing power and ability to leverage current mind share just can't stand up to the likes of Samsung, and it will rely heavily on carrier partnerships around the world to push the G6. That's just a reality of where the market — and LG's smartphone business — stands right now. But despite the fact that its sales will be far behind the Galaxy S8's no matter what, the G6 is nothing short of a great phone. If LG keeps making G series phones like this, only good things can happen from here.

The LG G6 could not have come at a better time. Launching its spec-packed, metal-and-glass G6 at the world's largest mobile show (Mobile World Congress) gives LG a rare opportunity to prove itself after that lukewarm reception of last year's modular-like G5, without the fear of being overshadowed by its biggest competitor, Samsung. The LG G6 is definitely the company's return to form: It's equipped with stellar hardware, it's water resistant, it's stylish, and it's certifiably unique in its own right — this is what is looks like when LG has a hit on its hands! The only bummer is that with Samsung readying to storm onto the scene with its own flagship smartphone, it's a wonder if the G6 will manage to compete. At the very least, it's good to see LG get the cart back on track. And if the price is right, we could see LG officially mark its comeback.

Overall, the LG G6 seems like a very valid Android option this 2017. For one, its design has improved, especially with its big screen-to-body ratio. Additionally, its display is also great with its high-end 1440 x 2880 pixel resolution. It may not have the latest Snapdragon processor, but as of its time of launch, the newest processor from Qualcomm hasn't been spread out to manufacturers yet. Additionally, LG G6's Snapdragon 821 chipset is still quite the fastest processor used by the smartphones in the current market. On top of all these, the LG G6 is also equipped with a competitive set of rear cameras. Note that the LG G6 comes with a dual 13 MP primary camera. So overall, the battery life isn't the only thing that improved in LG's new flagship phone.

The LG G6 is a phone that wears its ambition on its sleeve. It's not afraid to say, “to hell with the past; this is the way things are now.” It doesn't look like a G4 or a G5, nor does it feel like one. Despite its weirdly tall profile, we must say we like the LG G6. It’s a wonderful phone to hold in your hand – quite light and not at all awkward to hold or use one-handed – and the fact that the display occupies nearly the entire front is great. If I'm going to be totally honest, the LG G5 was a disappointment last year. I didn't have any major problems with how it worked, or how it was built, but it didn't have the gloss I think a high-end smartphone needs to have. The LG G6+ holds its own against other flagship devices in most categories as well as its price. But the Amazon Prime Exclusive version is a real steal with Prime pricing. You just can’t beat $519.99USD for a phone of this caliber. And with lockscreen ads now gone, it’s an even sweeter deal.

While it can’t quite keep up with some of the other heavy-hitters coming in at the tail end of 2017, the G6 Plus’ solid ergonomics and lower price-point make it hard to ignore outright. Like the name suggests, the G6 Plus is everything the G6 was - with a little bit of extra goodness thrown in for good measure.

Despite only having minor upgrades, I believe the G6+ is everything that the G6 should have been in the first place. It is a top tier flagship smartphone with a massive amount of storage, a HiFi DAC for audiophiles, and has the possibility of having 6GB of RAM.
