The Lenovo Flex 5 is a good example of a Chromebook that knows what it's for. The screen's light bleed issues and audio quality are downers, but they're not going to get in the way of work or school. The combination of a 13-inch full HD screen, 10th-generation Core i3 processor and 4GB of RAM is just enough to handle basic productivity workloads while staying will under the $500 mark.

Lenovo released one of the best Chromebooks of 2020 with its IdeaPad Duet two-in-one, a 10-inch Chrome OS tablet with a detachable keyboard and touchpad. However, while its small size and performance are awesome for mobility, they're limiting if you need to spend hours using it for work. For that, Lenovo's 13.3-inch IdeaPad Flex 5 Chromebook is the better bet. It's also a two-in-one, but it's more a laptop than a tablet. With the Flex 5, you're getting a larger display, a full-size backlit keyboard and better everyday performance with its 10th-gen Core i3 processor.

This laptop has everything I want in a Chromebook — compact, capable, and comfortable — while keeping the price reasonable and the build quality high. I especially love the backlit keyboard and the loud speakers sitting on either side of it.

The Lenovo Flex 5 Chromebook checks all of the right boxes for something that comes in at just over $400. It's a convertible with an FHD display that has pen support, it has a 10th-generation Intel Core i3 processor from the Comet Lake family, and well, that's about it.

Overall, the Flex 5 will suit mainstream users who have grown to appreciate the advantages of the simple, lightweight, and fast-evolving Chrome operating system, but also want pen support, physical connectivity, and other niceties common in the world of Windows laptops.

Lenovo’s Flex 5 Chromebook is probably the best Chromebook out there for most people. It’s affordable, at $409, but it cuts very few corners. The keyboard and screen are great and it has enough power for most tasks. If you’re a power user, you might want a laptop with more than 4GB of RAM or 64GB of storage. But most people in the market for a Chromebook will be quite happy with this laptop.

If someone approached me and said, “I want a really good laptop that’s less than $500,” I’d tell them they’d have to forgo Windows and consider getting a Chromebook — a Flex 5, in particular.

It seems like there aren’t very many middle-of-the-road options for Chromebooks. You’re either getting something really cheap that comes with a lot of compromises, your have to shell out for a Pixelbook that’s painful on the wallet. Lenovo’s ThinkPad Flex 5 manages to comfortably slot into the middle of the market for anyone that wants to go with Chrome OS.

To put it simply, buy this Chroembook. It has already become my go-to recommendation for anyone looking at a mid-range Chromebook that feels way more like a high-end device than it ought to. It is fast, it looks good, it feels great, it has all day battery, it gets updates for 8 years, and it is affordable. There’s just not much more I need to say, here.

There's one other thing that I find particularly interesting about the Flex 5 Chromebook, and that's that it weighs in at 2.97 pounds. Any $400-ish device that weighs under three pounds is quite impressive, and it feels really premium. Check out the unboxing below:

Currently available for less than $400, the Lenovo Flex 5 Chromebook is a pretty dang good deal. You get Intel’s capable 10th Gen processors, a sturdy and nice-looking chassis, a touchscreen with stylus support, a comfortable backlit keyboard, and a satisfactory port selection. While there’s no standout feature to enthusiastically praise, there’s not too much to complain about. That’s enough, of course, to make the Flex 5 one of the best midrange Chromebooks you can buy — as long as you’re aware of the tradeoffs you’re making for the price.

The Flex 5i is a solid Chromebook from Lenovo. It packs the same specs and performance you’ll find on a lot of laptops in this price range, and stands out just a little thanks to its colorful hardware. Lenovo suggests it’s a machine for both business and power users, though it might not quite fit the bill the way you think. The screen is average for this class of device. Battery life is good but falls just short of great. Speed and performance are fine, though anyone seeking the absolute best should look elsewhere. There are no biometrics, a bummer for business users, and the webcam could be better. The Flex 5i’s keyboard and trackpad have the goods, as do the speakers. Port selection is balanced for this class of device, and the size/weight are on the mark. Wireless performance was great. You don’t see too many blue Chromebooks these days, and that is something in the Flex 5i’s favor if you’re bored with black, gray, and silver. The Lenovo Flex 5i Chromebook earns its price point. It hits the right marks and is worth your consideration if a convertible Chromebook is in your future.

It doesn't come with a stylus as some convertibles do, but the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 Chromebook is an appealing touch-screen 2-in-1, with above-average performance and a comfortable keyboard. A brighter display and an HDMI port would make it an Editors' Choice award winner. Even as is, though, it deserves a spot on your list of Chromebooks worth checking out—and if Costco ever repeats its $449.99 sale, snap it up.

Little changes can elevate a good product to a great one, but the Lenovo Chromebook Flex 5i's changes are minor, and so is the payoff for it. The result is a solid Chromebook that looks good on its own but is stuck in the shadow of its big brother. I like the Flex 5i, but I still love the Flex 5 more. Especially with the higher pricing on the Flex 5i's Intel Core models compared to the 2020 model and the impending release of the Duet 5, the Lenovo Chromebook Flex 5i is facing stiff competition on all sides. The Chromebook itself is solid, but it needs more help if it wants to stand out.

The one issue that keeps the Lenovo Flex 5i 13″ 2-in-1 Chromebook’s flex mode at a “helpful” but not “fantastic” level is the speakers. The speakers are located on either side of the keyboard, so when you flip it around to tent or tablet mode, the sound is aimed away from the screen, meaning it’s a little muffled. I noticed this while watching Netflix in bed one night. Even on a higher volume, it seemed quiet, so if you’re going to watch anything, it’s probably best to throw on a pair of headphones to compensate. The loudness of the speakers in flex mode is a minor issue compared to all the positives, but if you’re going to be using it for significant media consumption, it’s something to consider. During this review period, I made the Lenovo Flex 5i 13″ 2-in-1 Chromebook my go-to computer, and it never let me down. It’s sturdy, fast, and such a pleasure to use; I really appreciate its long battery life and the bonus flexibility that comes with the 360º hinge and the touchscreen. Starting at only $485.99, the

If you’re on a budget and looking for a laptop for checking emails, pushing some light documents, and watching media on, the Lenovo Flex 5 Chromebook is a solid option. Though not the brightest, the 13-inch IPS touch display is fairly vivid and clear. The excellent and comfortable backlit keyboard is also a major plus, and when it comes to Chromebooks in general, you should know its limitations going in and be comfortable with them. The Lenovo Flex 5 offers up spunky performance and would be a great laptop for most young students or customers in need of a budget-friendly option. It’s attractive, sturdy, and can handle the basic daily needs of most non-power users.
