Although the laptop is an all-plastic affair, it does feel metallic to the touch, giving the impression of a more expensive piece of kit. The usual Lenovo build quality is present even in this machine, and there were no creaks in the chassis or hinges, no matter how hard I tried to extract one.

Spending less than $200 on a laptop is a surprisingly viable option right now, and for those who mainly use Gmail, Facebook, Netflix and Amazon (or your own list of mail, social media, streaming video and online shopping tools), a laptop with an Intel Atom processor, low-res screen and paltry 32GB of storage may very well be all you need.

The Lenovo Ideapad 100S offers a ton of value, combining long battery life, an attractive design, solid performance and free Office 365. This laptop would be an even more compelling choice if its keyboard, which generally feels good, did not flex and its touchpad supported gestures.

Some people just want to write emails and browse YouTube for hours on end without having to find a charger. The IdeaPad 100S delivers on that. It’s definitely a great machine for casual web surfers and folks who need the occasional productivity app like Word. Certainly, it’s a better buy than competing Chromebooks with fewer apps.

The Lenovo Ideapad 100S is a solid little budget laptop, hitting on the big points one wants in a laptop without crossing into more expensive territory. For $199, you'll get Bluetooth 4.0, reasonably powerful hardware, and a nice display, as well as perks like those 15GBs of OneDrive storage and the Office 365 subscription. For the price, Lenovo's Ideapad 100S is a great deal, one that will serve you well for Netflix streaming, on-the-go work, creating presentations, and more.

With an affordable price, an attractive shell, and a good keyboard and screen, the Lenovo Ideapad 100S is a very good compact budget laptop for those who don't need to do much more than surf the Web, watch the occasional video, and create school or business documents. We'd like to see more than 2GB of RAM so the system could better handle multitasking, and a bit more baked-in storage (64GB, say) for installing software.
