90% This Gaming Laptop's Performance Outpaces Its Price

Performance is obviously the main strength of the Lenovo Legion Pro 9i Gen 9. If you’re looking for a laptop that will pull double duty as a mobile workstation during the day and a gaming powerhouse at night, you won’t find many comparable options for the price. The extra 1TB of storage included in the model I reviewed was especially welcome. The downsides are similarly predictable. It’s not the easiest laptop to carry around, and that’s before you factor in the weight of the massive power brick weighing down your bag. The battery life is also par for the course for gaming laptops, which is to say it’s largely there to keep you going when you can’t find anywhere to plug in. Even with those downsides, the Legion Pro 7i remains a fantastic laptop overall, and while the above issues are worth mentioning, they don’t hold it back. This is a great choice if you’re looking for a desktop replacement and don’t want a massive 18-inch display.

Assuming you don’t plan to use the Legion Pro 7i as your travel laptop, there really isn’t much reason not to buy it. It isn’t the priciest gaming laptop out there, and you get quite the bang for your buck with an i9-14900H and RTX 4080 combo. Plus, it has some serious audio power and a fantastic display. If you need to take the Legion Pro 7i out and about, it only weighs 5.76 pounds. Sure, it may not fit in every laptop bag, but unlike its 18-inch counterparts, it should fit in most of them.

Lenovo's Legion Pro 7i Gen 9 16 is an exceptional gaming laptop that delivers quality at nearly every turn. It steps ahead of similarly configured competitors in performance while often undercutting their pricing. All that power is packed into a quality chassis and appears on a sharp and vibrant display that keeps up with fast-paced gaming. The Legion's size and weight are a drawback, but easy to ignore considering the system is basically a highly mobile desktop. Only the lack of Thunderbolt 4, USB4, and biometrics really disappoint, but they don't keep the Legion Pro 7i Gen 9 from earning our Editors' Choice award.

If you need a full-blown gaming laptop that isn’t huge, the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i (16″, Gen 9) is one of the best in this category. For its 16-inch form factor, it offers a lot – top-of-the-line hardware and a capable vapor chamber cooling that is doing its job well. The Intel Core i9-14900HX can maintain 3.35 GHz for the P cores and 2.72 GHz for the E cores during max CPU loads which speaks volumes. Even some 18-inchers with the same processor can’t reach such high frequencies. The GeForce RTX 4080 is mentioned as a full-powered version by the manufacturer and it truly is because of the ~175W TGP during gaming. Luckily, the noise in “Performance” mode isn’t that high. You can hear the tons of airflow but the fans aren’t intrusively loud (but not quiet either).
