While I certainly wouldn’t be GAMING on this laptop, moderate web browsing, light working including Office and photo editing might be ideal for the ThinkBook 13s… heavier processing, including running strenuous applications for video editing will take a toll on the performance and battery life of the laptop. But the price is right at $800 for the base model, and whether you are a business owner or just your average web surfer, there’s enough to love about Lenovo’s laptop to justify purchasing.

While it sounds enticing, there are cheaper alternatives. ASUS’ ZenBook 14 UX431 and Acer’s Swift 3 Premium have comparable configurations with discrete NVIDIA graphics and they are priced at S$1,398 and S$1,198 respectively. What they lack, insofar as specifications are concerned, are the security features of the ThinkBook 13s like the TPM chip and webcam privacy shutter. If these security features are important to you, then the choice is clear. The Lenovo ThinkBook 13s is a compelling option given its price, features, and specifications. For everyone else who just wants a notebook for general computing purposes and light gaming, know that there are other alternatives worth checking out.

Lenovo is marketing the ThinkBook 13S as a business laptop with entertainment features. It looks great, durable, and portable. And given our experience with it, I think they’re right. It’s basically for work, meaning MS Office applications, emails, and web browsing. For entertainment, we’re narrowing it down to YouTube and Netflix. It would have been nicer though if they included an SD card slot.

At 2.95 pounds, the ThinkBook 13s is a bit heavier than rivals such as the 2.7-pound Dell XPS 13 but still easy to carry. Bottom-mounted Harman speakers produce pretty good sound.

The Lenovo ThinkBook 13s is a laptop that I thoroughly enjoyed, and it seems like it's a perfect laptop to hand out to a team in an SMB. My biggest issues with it are that there's no USB Type-C charging and that the audio is just OK. The good news about the charger though, is that if you hand them out to a team, you've got a bunch of these chargers lying around.

So, we already said that this device is part of a brand new series in the laptop world. We were satisfied with our time with it. However, not need to lie here, the most flashy feature of the ThinkBook 13s is actually its look and the way it feels when handled. Its all-aluminum body hints at the premium nature of the device, while its matte finish is almost immune to fingerprints. In fact, the laptop kind of reminds us of the Lenovo Ideapad 730S, which is both thinner and lighter and proved to be a pretty decent piece of hardware, by the way.

The ThinkBook is a curious addition to Lenovo's catalogue. Designed to slot in between the well-established ThinkPad and IdeaPad product lines, its purpose is to offer small businesses a visually attractive package blending performance and reliability at an affordable fee.

The Lenovo ThinkBook 13s straddles the line between business and mainstream surprisingly well. Priced at $713, the laptop offers good multitasking performance thanks to its Core i5 processor and integrated graphics. It’s also got a fairly speedy SSD and decent battery life.

There's great value in this ThinkBook 13s as a competitively-priced ultrabook for everyday use, for multitasking and school/office work. It looks nice and it's well built, gets a good matte screen and a decent keyboard, handles daily chores without chocking and lasts for quite a while on a charge. It's also one of the few user-upgradable ultrabooks of this generation. But don't expect this to offer ThinkPad features and traits at a fraction of the cost, as the two lines have little in common. In fact, as you'll find from the detailed review below, the ThinkBook 13s is rather a rebranded and tweaked IdeaPad, and as long as you're getting it with the right expectations, it should do very well by you.

While Lenovo’s ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6th-Gen remains the superior business notebook in Lenovo’s stable, the MSRP is well over $1,000. (Prices on the base models have fallen to $999, as the 7th-Gen models have begun to ship.) It’s probably worth considering picking up a deal on the older X1 Carbon generation as well as considering the new ThinkBooks.

The Lenovo ThinkBook 13s isn’t the kind of laptop you’ll want to show off to your friends but it is one that’s remarkably consistent at letting you get the job done. It features both plenty of modern conveniences and decent specs. The design doesn’t get everything right and there’s definitely room for improvement but after my time with the ThinkBook 13s, I’m taking the sub-brand a lot more seriously than I did before. If Lenovo stuck an SD card slot on this thing, I could almost see myself using one. There’s far more to the ThinkBook 13s than just the subtraction that Lenovo have done to draw a line between it and from the pricier ThinkPad lineup. Even if there are limitations and shortcoming, this isn’t a story about compromise. The ThinkBook 13s is an adept workplace PC that’s nice to look at and easy to rely on.

By far, this has probably been the best Lenovo laptop I have reviewed. The awesome, long-lasting battery life will get users through the day and more. On the performance side, it runs really good, even with 8GB of RAM. The sound quality is powered by Harmen, so you know you’re getting as true sound as you can in a laptop. The Lenovo ThinkBook 13s is definitely worthy of being a Top Pick for 2019.

The Lenovo ThinkBook 13s is one of the best laptops I’ve used this year. It’s easily on the level of a MacBook in terms of hardware design and build quality. It has the performance chops to make it worthwhile and isn’t loaded with bloat like other Windows laptops. It’s an excellent machine that, for the right price, is definitely the Windows laptop to get for those who want to get work done on the go.

The real killer, though, is the price. At just a hair under £500 exc VAT (£499.99, to be precise), it’s one of the cheapest business-focused devices we’re seen recently. Indeed, it’s capable enough to go toe-to-toe with laptops twice its price. If you’re looking for a competent jack-of-all-trades at a ludicrously good price, this is definitely one to snap up.

Lenovo's ThinkBook 13s disappointed with strong performance drops at first, but it recovered thanks to Performance Mode. Still: AMD's Ryzen 4 remains unmatched. The true strength of the 13-incher lies in the display, while maintenance has been toned down.

The Lenovo ThinkBook 13s delivers outstanding performance for the price while packing in a fantastic display and appealing design. The audio could be better, but on balance there's very little holding us back from recommending this to any professional who's not quite ready to go all in on one of Lenovo's more expensive ThinkPad products.

Our Editors' Choice award holders among ultraportables include the ThinkPad X1 Carbon and Nano, the Dell XPS 13, and the Razer Book 13. The ThinkBook 13s Gen 2 doesn't quite rise to their level, but it costs less, and it's a thoroughly capable, convenient productivity partner. If you'd like something a little different and a little snazzier than a conventional compact, it's well worth checking out.

The ThinkBook 13s is a sensible option for business users on a tight budget. For less than $1,000, you get a sleek aluminum chassis, fast performance, a high-res 13.3-inch display and a decent port selection. There are some downsides, like the shallow keyboard and card slot omission, but those can be resolved with accessories. If you can stretch your budget for a ThinkPad X1 Carbon, we recommend you do it. Lenovo's flagship is the best business laptop around for a reason. Not only is it lighter than the ThinkBook, but it has quad speakers, a much better keyboard and long battery life. But don't worry if you don't have the funds because the ThinkBook 13s Gen 2 makes for a nice alternative.

There are areas where the cracks show, of course. Battery life is underwhelming for the category, and the screen’s brightness is disappointing. You do get advantages, particularly when it comes to look and build quality, from ultraportables that are $200–$300 more. But there are certainly customers — especially in the business sphere, I imagine — who care more about having a portable, affordable device with decent connectivity than they do about having one that’s beautiful. For those people, this should be a fine choice.

It feels pretty clear cut that anyone who prefers battery life over consistent performance would be well suited with the AMD powered version of the ThinkBook 13s. That is not to say the performance on the 13s is poor, it's just a bit more erratic than the Intel P-Series counterpart. However, with both the Intel and AMD models of the ThinkBook 13s sitting on a desk, customers would be hard pressed to really notice a difference other than the price, which is also a consideration. At $851.80, and several discounts throughout the year, the ThinkBook 13s is a no brainer upgrade for anyone looking to venture beyond the typical ThinkBook aesthetic or a years old laptop. The last consideration for customers regarding the ThinkBook 13s is finding a model that actually has an AMD chip in it. As I am writing this review, AMD options are out at Lenovo.com, Best Buy and NewEgg, that may change in the coming weeks.
