Reviews for the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon G12

I would recommend the 12th-generation ThinkPad X1 Carbon to just about everyone: casual users, professionals, programmers, and creators. There are a myriad of different ThinkPads out there, but this one stands out for its thoughtful attention to detail and improved design. Like all ThinkPads, it's durable and utilitarian, and light enough to commute to and from the office with. If you're someone that takes a lot of video calls, you'll love the webcam.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 12 is a powerful and portable business laptop that performs and is usable. While it comes at a premium price and has a few minor drawbacks, its lightweight design, strong specs, and excellent battery life make it a worthy investment for professionals on the go.

This 2024 generation 12 ThinkPad X1 Carbon has improved in many ways from previous generations. The form factor, build quality and screen are the biggest selling points of this laptop, alongside the improved performance with the Intel Core Ultra hardware. At the same time, this is nor as fast or as efficient as other Meteor Lake implementations, and comes at a hefty price premium over alternatives in the consumer segment of ultrabooks.

Lenovo took its flagship business ultraportable and made it even more ultra-portable with this year's model while updating its internals to Intel Core Ultra processors. However, it's now also ultra-expensive. The ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 12 is trimmer and lighter than last year's Gen 11 model -- which was already pretty trim and light -- and still maintains its excellent overall build quality. The biggest cosmetic change is the lip that protrudes from the middle of the top of the display. This extra room around the webcam allows for a thinner display bezel elsewhere above the display and a more compact chassis. The mechanical touchpad is slightly larger on this year's model but still feels undersized. Even among premium business laptops that are always more expensive than premium consumer models, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 12 is ridiculously expensive.

Lenovo’s impossibly thin and light yet mil spec durable 14” Ultrabook gets a new CPU and a redesign for 2024. The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 12 has Intel 14th gen Meteor Lake CPUs with Arc graphics, 16:10 full HD and 2.8K OLED display options, optional 4G/5G, up to 64GB RAM and impressive speakers. Unlike many super-slim competitors, it has plenty of ports.

I wanted to love the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 12. But the one-two punch of that price followed by the disappointing battery life put my interest in it down for the count. If you don’t need all the security-related bells and whistles, consider going for the Spectre x360, which offers better battery life and similar features for ~$1,800. Want security? Get the Prestige 16 — it’s $1,400 and has over 13 hours of battery life.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (Gen 12) is a beautiful machine for getting work done. It’s nicely constructed, extremely lightweight, and great to type on, with a beautiful display and solid battery life that seems like it could only be improved by packing a bigger, heavier battery into the laptop. But it’s expensive. You’re paying extra for a lot of thoughtful touches, but you can spend less money and get a great experience. I’ve always liked the HP Spectre x360 series, and as I write this, the HP Spectre x360 starts at $1,099 on HP’s website — $1,000 less than the ThinkPad X1 Carbon (Gen 12.) Meanwhile, Dell says its 2024 XPS 13 laptop will start at $1,299. You can never “have it all,” and the ThinkPad X1 Carbon (Gen 12) makes some noticeable tradeoffs with CPU performance to achieve its sleek form factor.

Like its predecessors, the Editors' Choice award-worthy ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 12 is simply as effective as a lightweight productivity laptop gets, with an unbeatable keyboard, a gorgeous screen, and a wide array of ports. But its current price has us urging you to seek a better deal on a Gen 11 unit, which lacks only Intel's Core Ultra AI enhancements and which we configured for $700 less online. Otherwise, consider another stellar ultraportable, like the HP Dragonfly G4, the Asus Zenbook 14 OLED, or the ThinkPad maker's consumer-oriented Lenovo Slim Pro 9i. We yield to no one in our admiration of the Carbon, but we're also not blind.

The ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 12 is its best version yet, as it adds a few welcome improvements over the previous few generations while retaining what makes for a very good laptop. But that doesn’t make it more competitive, at least not yet. Missing are the Intel vPro variants that will appeal to business users, as well as lower-priced versions and lower-power displays that will provide better battery life. And the ThinkPad isn’t as fast as others using the same chipset. For those reasons, I can’t recommend it as of now. That could change if Lenovo releases more attractive configurations, but that’s where my opinion stands currently.
