For years, the X1 Carbon was so far ahead of its competitors that Lenovo simply released the same system with new internals. But the business laptop landscape has evolved and budding competition is keeping Lenovo on its toes. The X1 Carbon Gen 9 is the company's answer to those capable competitors. It adopts modern trends, including a 16:10 display, and combines them with the latest Intel processors and a larger battery. Those aren't groundbreaking changes, but they arrive on what is already one of the most refined platforms — for business users or regular consumers — on the market. What made the X1 Carbon such a compelling option in the first place, like its lightweight chassis, fantastic keyboard and generous assortment of ports, is all still here. Introduce the old to the new and you get a masterclass of a laptop that will satisfy executives, students and everyday consumers alike. Yes, there are excellent alternatives like the Dell Latitude 9420 2-in-1 and HP EliteBook x360 1040 G7, but the X1 Carbon remains the best overall package due in large part to the updates made in this latest model.

The iconic slim and extremely light 14” Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen. 9 Ultrabook gets even better with FHD+ and 4K+ IPS displays with a 16:10 aspect ratio, optional 4G and 5G WWAN and a new hinge design. The laptop is LG Gram light at 2.5 lb / 1.1kg and despite its thinness, it has a healthy port selection including Thunderbolt 4, USB-A and HDMI. It’s clad in black carbon fiber and has passed a variety of MIL STD durability tests, and is available with Intel 11th gen CPUs with Intel Iris Xe graphics and your choice of Windows or Linux.

Nearly ten years old, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 has grown taller. Lenovo’s flagship ThinkPad is still the same sleek, sturdy corporate ultrabook you may recall, but the manufacturer has ditched the 16:9 display ratio in favor of a 16:10 display that provides more room from top to bottom. The taller display gives you more room to work and requires you to scroll less through lengthy documents and long web pages. Lenovo also tweaked the display hinge, expanded the touchpad, improved the positioning of the laptop’s speakers, and integrated the fingerprint reader into the power button. Inside, the laptop received the expected Intel update to the chipmaker’s 11th-gen Tiger Lake chips. With its roomier display and other improvements, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon remains a top choice for business execs, even if its webcam is behind the times.

I’ll admit, with laptops this small, my expectations drop due to the limited space. But this 2021 ThinkPad X1 Carbon exceeded my expectations. I could easily use this device as a primary computer, especially while on the road. Considering how well it performs, the stellar inputs, all the configuration options, and the battery life, there’s little to complain about.

Apart from the dim screen (and the lack of an option brighter than 500 nits, when a number of business models now offer 1,000-nit options), the still-slightly-cramped touchpad, and the squeaky keyboard, I have very few complaints about this X1 Carbon. Its price is quite high, of course, so those nitpicks still do give me some pause. Lenovo’s new additions — particularly the 16:10 screen and the upward-firing speakers — are absolutely welcome, and they make the X1 Carbon Gen 9 unquestionably the best iteration of this device so far. It’s a formula Lenovo has perfected to a tee, combining the ThinkPad line’s world-class engineering with exactly the tweaks it needed to stay excellent in the modern market. While the X1 Carbon isn’t the best value for consumers, any deep-pocketed business shopper should give it a look.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon delivers outstanding performance in an incredibly thin, lightweight, and stylish package, showing once again why the X1 Carbon is one of the best Ultrabooks ever made – if you're willing to pay for the best.

If the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 had an OLED screen, we'd be tempted to shut down PCMag.com's laptop-review efforts for a while and say laptop technology had hit an unsurpassable peak. It's that good, a superlative aspirational system for anyone who can afford it. It leaves room for gaming notebooks and content-creation workstations to outperform it, but it virtually defines what a productivity PC or business ultraportable should be. This must be our least surprising Editors' Choice pick ever.

Lenovo's new 9th generation ThinkPad X1 Carbon is an interesting machine to be sure. On one hand, it offered some of the best numbers we've seen from this new breed of ultralight Tiger Lake 11th Gen Intel Core-powered laptops, with chart-topping benchmark results virtually across the board. It also exhibited well-behaved thermals and acoustics, with what is obviously a well-design cooling solution on-board for sustained performance when plugged into the wall, and with relatively low fan noise.
