Lenovo expands it ThinkPad X1-series with a 15.6-inch laptop and competes directly with the popular Dell XPS 15 as well as the Apple MacBook Pro 15. The new flagship is equipped with a high-resolution HDR screen as well as a discreet Nvidia GPU. But is this still a business laptop or rather a full-fledged multimedia device with some business features for consumers?

This is one expensive laptop, but many might willingly pay the price for this beautifully engineered and designed machine. If you want desktop-level power with portability in a robust package, the X1 Extreme is built for exactly that.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme combines top-notch performance with portability while maintaining its legendary build. Its 4K touchscreen display is a hit or miss but the device is on the whole quite a stunner.

Extreme' is the right word to describe this laptop: it has a large 15.6-inch screen which, in 4K guise (as reviewed), is very watchable; high-end CPU and discrete GPU options allow it to handle demanding tasks; and with two SSD slots there's potential for a lot of internal storage.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme is one of the most alluring mobile workstations I’ve used in a long time. The laptop’s slim, lightweight design coupled with a stunning 4K display and high performance make this model a treat for anyone trying to get serious work done while away from the office. Battery life isn’t quite as stellar as some may hope, but the system can still offer several hours on a charge and, thanks to rapid charging, topping up the battery doesn’t take long at all.

Heat's a big problem with the Max-Q designs, since their fans are supposed hit a lower sound volume than their high-test alternatives. Lenovo's addressed that by adding a heat-dissipating aluminum alloy bottom cover to its veteran X1 carbon-fiber body. Otherwise, it's the standard X1 clamshell design.

The more expensive model of the ThinkPad X1 Extreme has been found to be a worthy competitor to the Dell XPS 15 in many respects. Today, the question is whether the same is true for the base model with the i5-8300H and the matte FHD screen. Find out which configuration of the X1 Extreme fares better in this comprehensive review!

As configured for our review, there's no question you'll have justify the business case (or pleasure, we suppose) associated with a $3100 laptop price tag, but you do have a fair swath of configuration options to choose from, between its base price and our much more top-end review config. Was Lenovo sandbagging our benchmarks here? Maybe just a tad but it is what it is, as they say, and you can dial things back a bit if this config is too rich for your blood. In the end, the Lenovo ThinkPad Extreme is an extremely well-equipped, powerful laptop with a beautiful 4K HDR display option that delivers workstation and enthusiast-class performance levels in a light, 4lb, extremely well-built machine. As long as you don't mind the relatively short battery life of its high-end display configuration, this new, larger 15-inch format ThinkPad X1 variant will handle just about anything anyone would throw at a laptop these days, and do so with grace and agility.

The four-pound Thinkpad X1 Extreme is surprisingly thin and light considering it has a 15-inch 4K HDR screen and powerful desktop-caliber internals. Add in the trademark ThinkPad keyboard, some incredibly sturdy construction and ports galore, and you’ve got the sort of machine that will satisfy even the most demanding of users. Just don’t plan on wandering too far from a power outlet.

The ThinkPad X1 Extreme is one of my favorite laptops of the year. It takes the best traits of mainstream consumer laptops (4K, Dolby, and Precision touchpad), blends it with gaming laptop features (Max Q discrete graphics and HDR), and adds in the best qualities of a business laptop (durability, security, and a low-profile). Of course, it’s not without its faults: the X1 Extreme’s speakers aren’t the best by far, the fans can get noisy, and the aluminum bottom plate can get pretty toasty on your lap.

For me personally, the X1 Carbon is still the sweet spot, with great performance, excellent battery life, and a robust thin-and-light form factor. That isn't to say the X1 Extreme is a bad machine, mind, not by any stretch. This is one of the best 15.6in business laptops I've tested, and it happens to be particularly good for both work and winding down with Netflix.

Overall, the ThinkPad X1 Extreme is an impressive laptop, but is it a Dell XPS 15 killer? That depends. On the performance front, it tracks closely. But where it really shines is weight. While you may scoff at an 8-ounce difference (when similarly configured with touch panels), you'll feel that in your bag and on your shoulder.

Lenovo has tried combining the best of all worlds with this laptop, and we're sure there are plenty of people who need a relatively portable machine that can be used for heavy creative work with a bit of entertainment on the side. Whether people who match that profile have the budget for a ThinkPad X1 Extreme will be another matter altogether.

There's no doubt that the ThinkPad X1 Extreme is a brilliant laptop. It has a killer performance rivalling any gaming laptop you can buy these days. The ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen lives up to its role as the most powerful non-workstation ThinkPad you can buy. For ThinkPad fans who are also demanding creators, it’s the best laptop you can buy. It’s also quite expensive, which is why it becomes a less-appealing choice for those who aren’t committed to the ThinkPad line. There are several 16-inch laptops that are powerful creativity workstations and cost a lot of money, like the MSI Creator Z16P and Apple MacBook Pro 16. But there are also considerably less expensive options, like the HP Envy 16 that’s just as fast and also enjoys an awesome display (in its case, an OLED panel). That makes the ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 5 slightly less easy to universally recommend.

Business laptops like ThinkPads cost more than even high-end consumer models, like HP's Envy line; MIL-STD 810H sturdiness, unbeatable build quality, and extra IT manageability carry a premium. We know that, but we're still denying the ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 5 an Editors' Choice award because it seems to join the Apple MacBook Pro 16 in the cost-no-object class (at least for independent contractors out there) while a recent crop of affordable OLED laptops are standout values. But if your company offers you an X1 Extreme or allows you to purchase one or more, you're lucky indeed. Don't look that gift horse in the mouth.
