The Lenovo Yoga 7i has its quirks, but it's part of a solid line of devices on a noble mission: reimagining the laptop experience. The combination of the touchscreen and flexible configurations invites the user to free themselves from the confines of a single form factor, and its sturdy, high-end build supports all the physical bending, adjusting, and positioning. I recommend the Yoga 7i for users who want a powerful laptop but also have use for a tablet. In this sense, the Yoga 7i offers the best of both worlds.

This is a tough question to answer because it really depends on what you want and need from a laptop. Gamers can and should look elsewhere, given the specs. People who need to do intense video editing or 3D modeling can probably do better, as well. The Yoga 7i is specced and priced for people who work on the computer but don’t work like that on the computer, if you catch my drift. If you need a bulky, sturdy machine for streaming things and answering emails, you can certainly do worse. The versatility and size of the display helps matters, as the Yoga 7i can (in a pinch) be an entertainment machine, too. But it’s not especially portable or remarkable in any other way. Still, it’s not as expensive as a MacBook and has a way more functional keyboard, if nothing else.

A 16-inch laptop is a desktop-PC alternative (commonly called a desktop replacement) by definition, so we've always been bemused by 16-inch convertibles: They're too bulky and heavy for use as tablets, so they spend most of their time in laptop mode, perhaps occasionally propped up for a presentation or folded flat on a desk for marking up a document with a stylus. Lenovo's Yoga 7i 16 Gen 9 (starts at $818.10; $899.99 as tested) is a big-screen 2-in-1 that updates last year's model with Intel's new Core Ultra silicon under the hood and Microsoft's new Copilot key on the keyboard. It's about as fine as an affordable large convertible gets, but it's more of a niche player than a mainstream option.

The Lenovo Yoga 7i Gen 9 succeeds in some areas but falls flat in others. It’s a capable 2-in-1 with a battery that can last a full day, loud top-firing speakers, and a roomy touchpad. However, a dull display and mixed results on our performance tests make the Yoga 7i a hit-or-miss depending on individual users’ preferences and needs. The Yoga 7i can handle basic daily tasks like word processing and web browsing fine. However, if you are looking for a laptop for graphic design, photo editing, or any graphics-intensive task, you will be better off with the similarly priced Lenovo Slim 7i or Acer Swift Go 14. Lenovo has put together a curious package in the 16-inch Yoga 7i (16IML9). It’s a well built piece of hardware, but it’s not built around great parts. With a lackluster display and unsatisfying keyboard, the ways you’ll actually interact with the laptop don’t meet the same standard of quality that the chassis brings to the table. You’ll still find a large footprint for productivity in the 16-inch display, and you won’t suffer from an overly heavy machine. Performance is decent for office tasks, and the battery life is more than respectable in that scenario. Having the option to use a keyboard and trackpad, a touchscreen, or a stylus also delivers flexibility that may benefit users with a variety of workflows who want one device to help with all of them. There are better laptops to go for if you have more straightforward computing needs, but if your work calls for Lenovo’s flipping trick, the Yoga 7i is a fairly sensible option at $900.
