The new Microsoft Surface Go is the perfect size for casual coffee-shop computing, but getting the full experience quickly drives up the price.

Microsoft has traditionally pushed the limits with Surface hardware: faster, more powerful, and yes, more expensive. The Surface Go feels like a repositioning, reaching down into the “niche” of the mainstream commuter, offering a tablet that can be a PC when you need it.

I rank the Surface Go above the iPad Pro and any of Google’s Chromebooks when it comes to overall productivity. The iPad Pro’s keyboard isn’t nearly as good as the Surface Go’s, despite its size, and Chromebooks can’t run full desktop apps. As a straight-up tablet, the Pro wins, but that’s not why you buy a Pro to begin with.

When I write these articles, I aim to channel the voices of the reviewers first and foremost, holding back my own opinion or commentary. But I’ll say this: Having just written an article demanding that manufacturers stop shipping systems that drop below their minimum base clocks, I feel obliged to stick to it. If the Pentium Gold 4415Y can’t hold its base clock, then the Surface Go isn’t a system ExtremeTech recommends. Period. I’m not going to pretend that we’re Consumer Reports, but somebody somewhere has to take a stand for the idea that customers deserve the performance they pay for. Going forward, we will not recommend a system that can’t maintain its minimum CPU clock under ordinary test conditions that represent standard workloads.

The Surface Go is the first Surface that can actually take on the iPad. It's impressively thin and light, while also being a fully-fledged Windows PC. Unfortunately, its slow hardware means you can't stress it too much, and Windows still needs more compelling tablet apps.

The Surface Go is an intriguing low-cost detachable for travelers, education buyers, and others who want to launch into Microsoft's well-made, attractive Surface 2-in-1s on a tight budget.

The new low-end Surface Go looks like a great replacement for the Surface 3, offering a way into the Surface lineup at a much more affordable price. The move to Kaby Lake will be a major boon to performance as well. Prices start at $399 for the base model, $449 for the same model with Windows 10 Pro, or $549 for 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB SSD. The 256 GB and LTE models will ship later. Pre-orders should be available soon.
