The metal Surface Laptop 3 is the sleekest Surface laptop yet and its implementation of AMD Ryzen is one of the better examples in the Ultrabook space. Unfortunately, almost everything else feels outdated.

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 (15-inch) should have been something special thanks to the AMD Ryzen Surface Edition processor it comes equipped with. Considering that this is the first flagship portable to come with this AMD and Microsoft collaboration, it was supposed to show what a non-Intel powered laptop can do. Unfortunately, this notebook is not much of a change. Its performance won’t impress anyone though it does come with refinements in power efficiency. In fact, it doesn’t stand out much from the pack other than its stellar battery life, the best this line has seen. Owners of older Microsoft Surface Laptops might wonder whether to make the upgrade to this model. Well, that depends on what you need from your upgrade. It makes sense to get the 3 if you’re happy with amazing battery life and a larger screen. But, if you need better performance, there are other places to look, most notably its successor, the Surface Laptop 4. If you are interested in the Microsoft Surface Laptop 3, you should be able to find some good deals on it.

The Surface Laptop 3 superbly marries hardware and software in a way that other Windows 10 notebooks have not. Add to that its simple and clean design that we're really big fans of and there is plenty to get excited about for the Surface brand.

So guys, the Surface Laptop 3 (15) is exactly what Microsoft states it is – a laptop that will guide you with your Office 365 work, word processing, countless hours of Web browsing, and in our view, photo and light video editing. If you are genuinely unpretentious, you have no problem buying a separate dongle and money is not a problem for you, go for it, this device has some quality. Just remember the drill – keep the Power Mode setting down at “Better Battery Mode” and you shouldn’t have any problems.

Overall, this is a decent 15-inch laptop if you really need a bigger screen and are a fan of Surface hardware, but I would otherwise look for a laptop that has Thunderbolt 3 support and more USB ports, or even simply the smaller 13.5-inch Surface Laptop 3 with the Intel chip. And if we are talking about smaller 13- and 14-inch notebooks, then it's impossible not to consider also ASUS' ZenBook 14 UX434 and Acer's Swift 5. These notebooks have 10th generation Intel processors, discrete graphics from NVIDIA, and what's more, costs around the same or even less.

The Surface Laptop 3 15in is often fantastic; it’s finely crafted and comfortable to use, and that screen is one of the best in its class. However, that also makes it hurt harder when it settles for less in the performance and connectivity departments. On that note, much of what is good about the Surface Laptop 3 15in can be had in the 13.5in version for less money - and if it’s power you’re after, the XPS 15 remains a good choice even years after launch. That leaves the 15in model as a laptop that dabbles in greatness, but ultimately doesn’t make for a very compelling purchase.

Though we loved the 13-inch Surface Laptop when it first shipped two years ago, a lot has changed for thin and light premium laptops since then. Now the line just doesn't stand out the way it once did, even the new 15-inch model. At first, it isn't clear who the 15-inch Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 is for: Compared to the rest of its many competitors, it's not particularly light, or fast or feature-packed. It's not inexpensive or full of cutting-edge tech and it doesn't have an especially long battery life. But it's reasonably portable, sufficiently fast, looks pleasantly sleek, is partly upgradeable, and even backward-compatible with previous power supplies sold by Microsoft. So it probably does make sense for one class of laptop buyers: enterprise.

The Surface Laptop 3 is a super-sized version of Microsoft’s ultraportable, with a gorgeous 15-inch screen and powerful AMD hardware. The new sizes, finishes, processor configurations and additional features like fast-charging all make this the most versatile generation of Surface Laptop yet. An elegant design with a more-angular take on Apple's classic wedge-laptop look propels the Surface Laptop 3 to earn some of our respect. Somewhat surprisingly, Microsoft didn’t load up the Surface Laptop 3 with too much extraneous crapware, although worthless apps like Farm Heroes Saga make an appearance. Honestly, we wish Microsoft did more with the Surface app that it bundled with Surface devices. While it provides a nice summary of the system specs and provides basic configuration options for the Surface Pen (sold separately), it would be welcome to see something a bit more comprehensive.

I think the Surface Laptop 3’s sleek aesthetic continues to be worth indulging, and the performance, though not earth-shattering, helps set the Laptop’s bar higher. Those who are more inclined towards brutalist efficiency should also consider looking at recent introductions like the Acer Swift 3—there’s a lot of functionality there for under $1,000, even if you won’t like the display and keyboard as much. Lenovo’s ThinkBook is also worth considering.

Overall, the Surface Laptop 3 15 is a great laptop. It keeps all of the design cues of the smaller generation and just makes it a bit bigger, retaining the same thin & light design and keeping it easy to travel with. Microsoft has forged a solid partnership with AMD, and the Ryzen APU that's at the heart of this laptop brings with it great GPU performance and good CPU performance, even though it is at the cost of overall battery life. Plus, if you have been eyeing up the previous generation Surface Laptop 2 and were held up due to the USB situation – or uncertainty about the Alcantara keyboard deck – the new generation does offer fixes there, which makes the Surface Laptop 3 a much more palatable device.

Still, if you were hoping that the 15-inch Laptop 3 would be more than just a bigger Surface Laptop, I’m sorry to report that you’ll be disappointed. Fortunately, there are plenty of other, more powerful 15-inch laptops available, such as Apple’s MacBook Pro, Dell’s XPS 15, or even Microsoft’s own Surface Book 2. I don’t know if Microsoft needed to make a 15-inch version of the Surface Laptop, but it did, and it mostly did a good job with it.

I really like the Surface Laptop 3. I just don't love it as much as I'd hoped I would. With an attractive, lightweight chassis and a gorgeous 15-inch display, the Surface Laptop 3 successfully bridges the gap between ultraportable laptops and those with large screens. Unfortunately, the laptop falls frustratingly short in other ways: Its performance and battery life are unimpressive, there are very few ports, and upgrading storage and RAM increases the price exponentially.

Gizmodo is the most positively-inclined towards the new AMD laptop, writing: “If you value portability and don’t need half a dozen CPU cores and a big discrete GPU, the Surface Laptop 3 is a rarity that hits a perfect balance I didn’t know I needed until I had it in my lap. AMD (and Microsoft) have produced a GPU and CPU seemingly as good as Intel’s very best. It’s absolute proof that AMD can and should start appearing in more laptops, especially the big flashy ones.”

Despite a handful of shortcomings, the Surface Laptop 2 was one of our favourite devices of last year, thanks to a sleek design and capable performance. The third entry in the series has addressed the main niggles that we had, and aside from lacklustre performance in the Core i5 model, there’s really not much at all to complain about. As far as do-it-all business laptops go, the Surface Laptop 3 is one of the better examples we’ve seen. Portable, well-built and decently powerful at the top end, the Surface Laptop has surpassed the MacBook Air and is now on track to challenge the MacBook Pro.

Finally, as this is a Surface device, numerous weird bugs have come and gone throughout my testing period. I’ve already mentioned the display auto brightness bug, but I’ve also seen aggressive battery drain, fans ramping to 100 percent while charging, and the trackpad randomly stop scrolling in apps. Most of these bugs go away after fully shutting down the laptop and restarting it, but they are all frustrating things to experience in the first week of using a brand-new laptop. Microsoft typically does update its Surface devices with bug fixes and patches on a regular basis, so hopefully things will have settled down a few months from now, but right now, the Laptop 3’s experience can be hit-or-miss.

Overall, this is an expected upgrade but one Surface Laptop fans will appreciate. One of the best Windows 10 alternatives to the MacBook Air and Pro 13, though the likes of the Dell XPS 13 also do a good job at filling that spot. The Surface Laptop 3 15 is a proper MacBook Pro rival and a top addition to the Surface family; a few more ports and an SD card reader would have been ideal though, mind you, not in keeping with the clean aesthetic Microsft is going for.

That impression didn’t go away. Yet there is also the dawning realisation that the big screen is all you get with the 15-inch Ryzen 5 Surface Laptop 3. It might help to think of it as a physically pumped-up version of a smaller computer with a bigger screen. That makes it good for personal productivity, not so good for games or media production.

Despite its flaws, I really do like the Surface Laptop 3 15. I feel like the display is the perfect size. As I said earlier, I've never cared much for 3:2 displays, because they tend to not be as wide as 16:9 screens, and I need apps to run side-by-side. But this screen is the width of a traditional 14-inch laptop, which makes it fine; it's just taller, giving me extra real estate.

On the other hand, the Surface Pro 7 at the same price is a speedy little 2-in-1 convertible, especially if you can live with 128 GB of storage. At $899 the Core i5 with 8 GB of memory and 128 GB of storage is extremely reasonable. The upcharge for more storage is more palatable when the performance is excellent like it is here. We really liked the Surface Pro 7's mix of looks, great display, light weight, and nice performance, so we're happy to give it our Recommended award.

Meanwhile for Intel, Ice Lake has been years in the making, and, after a long delay, it is finally here. After digging into the platform in-depth, it’s clear that Ice Lake is an incredibly strong offering from Intel. The CPU performance gains are significant, particularly because they were made in the face of a CPU frequency deficit. But the biggest gains were on the GPU side, where Intel’s Gen 11 GT2 in its full 64 Execution Unit configuration is likely the biggest single increase in GPU performance since they started integrating GPUs. It pulls very close to AMD’s Vega, closing the gap in performance to almost zero.

If you want the best 15-inch Surface Laptop 3, you’ll need to look for the business model, and buy that one. You won’t get fancy retail packaging, but you’ll end up with an Intel ‘Ice Lake’ powered system with better overall performance and longer battery life than the rival AMD powered machine. You’ll also get Windows 10 Pro and Wi-Fi 6 to boot. You are looking at about a $100 price premium for the Intel powered Surface Laptop 3, but depending on the configuration it might actually be less expensive as it was in our case. You can find the Surface Laptop 3 for business with pricing starting at $1,099 shipped for the 13.5-inch model or $1,299 for the 15-inch model. The Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 for Business that we tested today runs $1,599 shipped as it has the double the RAM and SSD size over the base model and may be worth the extra cash as 16GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD seems a must on premium devices as we enter 2020.

The Surface Laptop 3 15 is a 15-inch premium laptop you can't ignore; it's remarkably built and an attractive bit of kit. The AMD Ryzen processor options tackle everyday tasks with ease, but this isn't a device for high-end design work or gaming, while the battery performance is a major let down.

The disparity in value is what I can’t help landing on with the Ryzen 7 version of the Surface Laptop 3. It’s significantly more expensive than the Ryzen 5 model, yet battery life drops under 8 hours. Performance improves somewhat. If you’re deciding upon which Surface Laptop 3 to buy, we’d suggest either the Surface Laptop 3 (Ryzen 5) model instead, or else another laptop suggested above.

Our thesis that the Intel-powered Surface Laptop 3 for Business might be a better bet still holds true—although the Ryzen 7’s performance makes that a much more challenging statement to defend. At just $100 more, the Surface Laptop 3 for Business offers a similarly configured model as our test unit, with a Core i7-1065G7 inside it as well as improved wireless capabilities. That’s the same Core i7-1065G7/16GB/256GB configuration as in the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 7390, which we’ve tested.

With some more juice, the Surface Laptop 3 would be hard to beat in this ultracompetitive category. As it is, though, the strong trackpad/keyboard combo, improved performance and snazzy (though little changed) design make the Laptop 3 worth the price tag.

The Surface Laptop 3 hits all the notes you’d want to hit without radically deviating from what have made previous Surface Laptops work. If you’re uninterested in the tablet form-factor offered by the Surface Pro 7 and want to get your hands on a Windows-based clamshell that’ll excel at the ordinary, this remains a competitive option that’s easy to recommend to all but the most demanding power users. For them, the Surface Book is the place to go.

The Surface Laptop 3 isn’t a gaming laptop, but it can play older titles and modern games with more modest GPU requirements. It won’t blow your socks off, but it’s a much faster solution than any previous GPU Intel has ever shipped.

The Surface Laptop 3 with Intel’s 10th-gen Core i7 chip achieves roughly 10 hours of battery life. This is more than enough to get you through your workday, and siginificantly longer than what was achieved by the 15-inch Surface Laptop 3 with AMD’s Ryzen 5 CPU, or the 15-inch Surface Laptop 3 with Ryzen 7. Other than the CPU and storage variations, the Surface Laptop 3 units we’ve tested are largely identical.

No two ways about it, the Surface Laptop 3 (13.5in) is an exceptionally good laptop. It's very light, slim and good looking, with performance across the board that’s a match for the best in the business. It's more practical than previous models, with non-Alcantara options that won’t get grubby, and a good spread of specifications means you can choose a model that suits your requirements and not pay more than you need to. As with most products, there is the odd area of weakness. It's high time Microsoft moved to wide-gamut displays on its hardware and, ideally, I'd have liked to see a Thunderbolt 3-equipped USB Type-C port, rather than plain old USB 3. It's also a touch disappointing that Microsoft has provided only one Type-C port. But these are relatively small complaints. If you want a laptop for work and, maybe, a little play, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 is a brilliant option with very few significant shortcomings.

This time we look at the 13.5” which has the most powerful graphics available in a 13” convertible Windows tablet-laptop combo. The casing and design are unchanged, but the internals are updated to Intel 10th gen Ice Lake quad core CPUs and NVIDIA GTX 1650 Mx-Q on the 13.5” and GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q on the 15”. The Book 3 models now come with higher watt chargers, Intel WiFi 6 and the same detachable “clipboard” tablets with Surface Pen support (pen not included).

The Surface Laptop 3 isn't a revelation, but the new 10th Gen CPUs and all-metal finish make it a worthy successor to one of the best portable laptops of last year. However, if you are not set on a detachable notebook, it would be foolish not to at least check out convertible notebooks like the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 and HP Spectre x360. Granted, their tablet modes are compromised, but their built-in keyboards offer a better typing experience. If you type a lot, this is something to bear in mind. Moreover, the current crop of convertible notebooks is much more comfortable to be used as tablets, because they have never been this compact or light.

The 15-inch Surface Laptop 3 has some of the best battery life we’ve experienced in a 15-inch laptop, which should be lauded. The Surface Laptop 3 for Business with Intel processors is a better laptop than its AMD sibling. It has better performance, longer battery life, a faster hard drive and ships with Windows 10 Pro. If the gulf in price were wider — the Intel model is only $100 more expensive — then we might consider the AMD model, but we strongly recommend going to Microsoft's online store and ordering the business edition instead.

When the device first came out, it started at $999.99. However, as of April 2021 and with the release of the Surface Laptop 4, you’ll most likely find a bargain for the Surface Laptop 3, starting with the Windows Store that’s selling it for $769.99 or you can have a look at deals on Amazon. In my opinion, the higher the spec is, the worst a deal it becomes especially as you get closer in price to its successor. Considering that the Surface Laptop 4 is an improved Surface Laptop 3, the one that you should get will depend on the deals available and how much those improvements are worth to you.

Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 (13.5″)’s display (Sharp LQ135P1JX51 (SHP 14B3)) is touch-sensitive, has a very high resolution, and naturally for an IPS panel – comfortable viewing angles and good contrast ratio. Additionally, it has decent maximum brightness (400+ nits), adequate default settings and comfortable backlight in terms of PWM. Although all of that speaks well of the panel, there is something that represents it even better – the color accuracy. By default, the display is pretty color accurate, however, when you apply our Gaming and Web design profile, the Average dE drops to just 0.8, which makes it one of the most color-accurate displays we’ve had in our office.
