Given how superior the alternative choices are, it’s tough to recommend the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5. It’s reasonably priced for such a slim, attractive machine, but that’s not enough these days when you can pick up an M1 MacBook Air from £999 and quite often for a lot less than that in the sales. It’s laudable that Microsoft has made the laptop more repairable this year but, that aside, there isn’t much to elevate this laptop above its rivals, all of which offer more power, superior displays and better battery life for the money.

With its unique fairy tea green color scheme, the extremely thin and light body shape, coupled Microsoft’s simple and elegant design style, in terms of appearance, the field of 13.5-inch thin and light, Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 is the only one. We tested the i7 high-end version. For students with limited budgets, if you want to enjoy the exquisite workmanship of Surface Laptop 5 at a relatively low price, you can consider the i5 low-end version. The starting price is only 7888 yuan.

Ultimately, the Surface Laptop 5 still holds its place among premium Windows laptops. With excellent hardware and build quality, the Laptop 5 is an all-around excellent experience. It’s not perfect, and as mentioned above, improvements like slimmer bezels, a 120Hz display, and better battery life could go a long way to improving the overall experience. As always, those who don’t care for a premium hardware experience can find options from other PC manufacturers that meet the same levels of performance for less. It’s easy to argue that the Surface Laptop 5 is too expensive for what it offers, but in terms of quality, you get what you pay for. And finally, there isn’t a good argument for upgrading to the Surface Laptop 5 from a previous model. Aside from the improved CPU, the Surface Laptop 5 is basically identical to the Laptop 4 and Laptop 3 – unless your old Surface Laptop is broken beyond repair and you want to replace it with a new Surface Laptop, there’s no reason to ditch your old PC for the Laptop 5.

This year's Surface Laptop 5 is Microsoft's latest and greatest notebook. It's the 13 model and it's the first to feature the Intel 12th configs CPU. The 12th configs is the first CPU to be built by Microsoft for the Surface Laptop and it's a nice addition to the notebook's already impressive lineup of hardware.

I may seem like I had high standards for this review, and I did. This is a flagship laptop from the company that makes Windows, after all. While those resources and ability to optimize for its own OS did show in aspects like the Surface Laptop 5's consistently excellent build quality and performance, it faltered when it came to basic modern necessities like a decent webcam and a contemporary display layout. If you never videoconference or if wasted space around your display doesn't bother you, you're looking at the best Windows laptop you could buy right now. Even if those things do irk a bit, I'd recommend balancing them against the exceptional performance, build, and aesthetics. The Surface Laptop 5 is frustratingly close to being that universal leader among Windows portables that Microsoft wants it to be. But, if Microsoft wants that crown, I hope it updates the components that held this generation back when it comes time to design the Surface Laptop 6.

Today Microsoft announced its refreshed Surface Laptop 5, which just like before will be available in 13.5 and 15-inch models. The new notebooks will also feature 3:2 touchscreens with a very familiar brushed aluminum design. Actually, almost everything about the Surface Laptop 5 is the same as before, aside from the addition of new 12th-gen Intel CPUs and one Thunderbolt 4 port.

But more importantly, after seeing Dell add a new member to the XPS 13 family and all the changes Apple is making on the MacBook Air and Pro lines, it's just a bit disappointing to see Microsoft simply going through the motions. And all this is coming from the company that basically invented the modern detachable 2-in-1, so I know Microsoft can do better.

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 (15.0″) is a thin and light device that impresses with good build quality and sleek design. This can be useful for people who are constantly on the go and for the ones who prefer a machine with an unintrusive design instead of glowing like a Christmas tree notebook. The touchscreen panel is a joy to use. It has a high resolution, good viewing angles, and a good contrast ratio. The sRGB coverage is 89% and the maximum brightness is high enough for comfortable usage in a non-dimmed room. Still, the panel is PWM-free above 53% of brightness, however, below this value, the pulsations have a very high frequency, which should be undetectable for most people. If you want to open the device, you’ll be shocked by the fact that it’s almost impossible without leaving some scars on the chassis or breaking something. So, pick your configuration carefully.

As for the battery life, the Surface Laptop 5's 47.4Wh battery allegedly lasts up to 17 hours. Of course, like all manufacturer claims, that's quite a stretch. I've mostly gotten around 7.5 hours with the screen at half brightness, which is pretty good for a Windows machine. But your mileage may vary, as it's dependent on how you use your device. All in all, the Surface Laptop 5 is a premium device with a matching price tag that ticks all the right boxes for its business target audience. With that being said, you should consider whether to opt for the previous generation Surface Laptop 4 instead, as it offers 90 per cent of the same experience for a lower price. However, you do lose out on the versatility of the Thunderbolt 4 port and the superior performance of the Intel Alder Lake chip. Moving forward, if we were to recommend further improvements for the lineup in the future, it would be adding more I/O ports and reducing the size of the bezels around the display. Speaking of which, a higher refresh rate screen would be welcomed too.

Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 is a luxury machine in a stylish execution that a pleasure to take out of the bag and put your hands on. It also has an excellent 15-inch touchscreen with a usable resolution. For the price, however, I miss a bit more opulence. 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD are not what I expect to find in a top model from a leading manufacturer. And it’s not hard to find machines with the same performance for much less. Whether your preference is for a PC (for example, the fine Acer Swift 5) or you prefer a MacBook Air M2.

Microsoft has arguably phoned it in with the Surface Laptop 5 this year – all it really did is throw in the latest Intel chips and Thunderbolt 4 and call it a day – but fortunately the start point was good enough to get away with it. Some elements are undeniably dated, such as the thick black bezel around the display and the basic 720p webcam, but with strong performance and an otherwise sleek design the laptop still holds up well. A good spread of ports help, and while I’m no fan of the fiddly Surface Connect socket its appearance will appeal to existing Surface owners with accessories they’re hanging onto. Next year Microsoft will have to make real changes, but in this iteration the Surface Laptop 5 can ride out one more year as an appealing option.

While the Surface Laptop 5 hasn't gotten a boatload of updates, it still has a really elegant design and the addition of new 12th-gen Intel chips and a Thunderbolt 4 port provide a big bump up in speed and usability. Sure, it might not have the sharpest webcam or a ton of ports, but if all you need is a streamlined ultraportable for general productivity, the Surface Laptop 5 packs all the essentials into a very sleek package. It is somewhat telling, however, that Microsoft only sent out the 13.5-inch model for review, because there are even more changes I'd like to see on the 15-inch version. I know my dream of getting an Xbox gaming laptop probably won't ever happen, but I think there's a ton of potential to transform the bigger Surface Laptop 5 into a really great all-rounder by adding support for discrete graphics and a few more ports. But the hard part comes when trying to decide between the 13-inch Surface Laptop 5 and something like the XPS 13. For the same $1,000 starting price, Dell's notebook comes with a similar CPU and a larger 512GB SSD instead of just a 256GB drive, but no touchscreen (though you can upgrade to one if you want). That means you have to choose between getting a slightly better value in the XPS 13, or opting for a taller 3:2 touch display with the Surface Laptop 5. Still, if all you want is a stylish ultraportable with a nice screen for productivity, Microsoft's latest clamshell has a lot to like. I just hope next year we get a full refresh instead of just a simple spec bump.

This build comes at a premium, though, and it's lacking in key areas by comparison. For a similar price—less in the case of the Slim 7 Pro X, more for the XPS 15—competitors with matching amounts of RAM and storage offer some combination of better CPUs, discrete GPUs, OLED displays, better webcams, and more ports. The cost of bumping up the memory and storage in Laptop 5 configurations is pretty high, without those added benefits, and a lightweight CPU as the only option. All of that is to say that the Surface Laptop 5 is a nice all-rounder laptop, but it’s better suited to mobility-first users who appreciate a sleek design over power. The same philosophy guides the SQ3-based Surface Pro 9 and the Dell XPS 13, so you could well call this a trend. The high price, lacking features, and low power ceiling limits the upside, but there’s still a lot here to like as long as you don’t need higher-end power and value style. If you need more, the Dell XPS 15 OLED is much better suited to pro users, while the Lenovo Slim 7 Pro X is the best deal.

The 15-inch Surface Laptop 5 feels like such a mixed improvement over last year's model that it's hard to recommend to anyone. But those are the only meaningful upgrades Microsoft appears to have delivered over last year's model, and they don't do enough to keep the Surface Laptop 5 competitive with the best Windows laptops on the market. As you can see from our in-house testing, you can generally get better performance and more useful features for your money from competitors like the Acer Swift 5 and Dell XPS 15 OLED. The former is $300 cheaper than our Laptop 5 review unit yet outperforms it by most metrics, while the latter can be more expensive yet offers you upgrades like a discrete Nvidia GPU (great for gaming) and an OLED screen which makes just about anything on it look better. So while the Surface Laptop 5 is still a very serviceable laptop, it's a disappointing step forward from Microsoft. This is the company that Windows built, and it would be great to see it take a leading role in designing the ideal Windows 11 laptop. Sadly, the Surface Laptop 5 ain't it.

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 is not the worst laptop in the world, but a combination of performance issues, an outdated look, a terrible port selection, and a trumped-up price tag leave it lagging behind plenty of rivals.

Overall, this is a nice laptop that is hampered by some design decisions. This machine is largely the same as the Surface 4 Laptop, so if having the latest processor and RAM isn't a concern for you, it's not terribly important to upgrade. Personally, I like my laptop to have I/O, and the two measly ports here aren't going to do it for me. But the display is great and considerably sizeable; it's large enough to do some serious multitasking. If you're into it, it's also touch-sensitive, which is also becoming table stakes in 2023. The keyboard and trackpad are both awesome and provide a high-quality UI experience, even if the keystrokes are a bit on the short side. Overall, this is the very definition of an iterative update, and Microsoft needs to go back to the drawing board for the Surface Laptop 6 if it wants to move units. For now, the internals are a nice upgrade, but certainly not a mandatory one if you already have a Surface Laptop 4. There's just not enough "new" here to coax you out of thousands of dollars. However, if you're in the market for a new laptop and you need to have the maximum amount of screen real estate, this is the laptop for you. Just make sure to carry a dongle with you, and possibly the device's power cord depending on how long you'll be using it on a given day.

In some ways the Laptop 5 is very much of the moment, with latest-gen Intel hardware and one of the best displays around. But yet again it feels like it has a foot stuck in the past with some ancient ports, a 720p webcam and large bezels. And that means you can do better with similar-priced options like Dell’s XPS 13.

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 is an interesting one. On one hand, there's barely anything new here, other than the processor, which makes it hard to get excited about. On the other, it's a small improvement to what was already one of our favourite laptops, which makes it very easy to recommend. It wouldn't have been hard to make this an appealing upgrade - updating the screen, shrinking the bezels and using a better webcam would have done just that. Instead, the only meaningful upgrades are the new processors and the addition of Thunderbolt 4. If you're a Surface Laptop 4 owner, there's no real reason to upgrade, unless you absolutely need Thunderbolt connectivity. But, if you're thinking of buying a Surface Laptop for the first time, this could be a great choice. It's the fastest Surface Laptop to date, it has a fetching additional colourway and it still has all of the features that made us fall in love with its predecessor - superb fit and finish, excellent keyboard and trackpad, a lovely screen and outstanding speakers. We think it's a solid purchase, though savvy shoppers might want to consider the older model instead, which offers most of the same experience at a lower cost.

After all those fairly good points, we still feel that the Surface Laptop 5 is lacking. It's not that we didn't like it, it's more that we sense it could be better. It has no glaring flaws that will make you balk at the price (it's under £1,000), it feels professional, and there isn't really anything that is annoying. Yes, people may want an AMD model, some may find the design tired, and there's that awful webcam and large bezel combo. It most certainly could be better. But, slightly better laptops are considerably more expensive (ThinkPads, MacBooks, MateBooks). What Microsoft has here is a competing product that costs just £833. So it's good value for money, if not particularly special.

If you’re searching for a combination of style, a good screen and a reliable system then the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 is unlikely to disappoint. The sleek compact aluminium design looks premium and feels sturdy while the hardware inside lends itself well to productivity-based tasks, this is a great choice for busy workdays and evening entertainment, although it isn’t necessarily built for graphics-intensive tasks like videogames. What’s more is that the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 has decent battery life and a fast charge time, so you’ll be able to pop this in your bag to use out and about without worrying too much about getting caught short. Some people might be looking for a few more ports around the frame like an SD card slot or an HDMI, but even so, I was pleased to see that they have added in the USB-C with Thunderbolt 4 support because it opens up a whole world of opportunity when it comes to hooking it up external monitors and all of your other devices. All in all, while it has its flaws, there isn’t that much bad to say about this PC. It’s a great choice if you’re willing to spend the money on it!

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 has seen minor upgrades, with a slightly faster processor and Thunderbolt 4 connectivity. But with an outdated design and underwhelming performance, it’s difficult to understand why anyone would be willing to purchase this laptop instead of a MacBook Air or Dell XPS 13.

Essentially, Surface devices have always commanded a premium. That’s fine, especially in niches (the Surface Pro tablet, the excellent Surface Laptop Studio) where the competition isn’t as fierce. As someone who uses laptops daily, the smooth, spacious design absolutely resonates. But with now three generations of Surface Laptops that Microsoft has left virtually unchanged, it’s best to conclude that Microsoft’s Surface Laptop 5 emphasizes design, not value or raw performance. Take your pick: buy the Microsoft Laptop 5 if you’re in the first camp. Otherwise, look elsewhere.

Ultimately, the Laptop 5 continues to be a well-built and well-performing laptop that, while expensive, is not so high in the retail clouds that any substantial flaw is a nonstarter. (Cough, ThinkPads.) It is a good computer that I enjoy using. It has more than enough power for general use, while those who need heavier graphic chops may prefer the much heavier Surface Laptop Studio, which is available with discrete GPUs. But the battery life is not as good as last year’s AMD models were providing. It is legitimate to trade off some efficiency in exchange for additional power. It’s a tradeoff I’m sure some shoppers are happy to make. But it wasn’t one Microsoft needed to ask of them. Microsoft could’ve had it both ways.

The Surface Laptop 5 is a disappointment. It’s a design I like, and many of the essential elements are solid. The keyboard is great, the port selection has what you need, and the 3:2 display is pleasant to work on. But as a laptop released in 2022 at this price, it’s falling behind. The M1 MacBook Air often sells for hundreds of dollars cheaper, despite being a faster and longer-lasting laptop. Then there are laptops like the Dell XPS 13 or HP Envy x360 13, both of which are cheaper and offer more affordable configuration options. I like the 3:2 touchscreen that the Surface Laptop 5 includes all the way down the stack, but Microsoft’s overpriced storage and memory make it hard to recommend anything beyond the base configuration. Keeping an AMD model in the lineup may have made the Surface Laptop 5 a bit more competitive. But even still, there are a number of reasons the Surface Laptop 5 feels like it’s a few years old — because in many ways, it is.

If I can give any advice to Microsoft, it would be that it is not in a place where it can continue to roll out these iterative updates. I hate to say it, but OEMs like Apple can get away with that because they’ve perfected their craft, so their highly praised products just need a few tweaks. Microsoft, on the other hand, needs to cut the crap and ditch the thick bezels, bury the 720p webcam, and squeeze more performance out of its laptops. Finally, it goes without saying that your successor should be better than your predecessor, but in terms of battery life, performance, video transcoding, display color coverage, that is not the case. Perhaps things will change if Microsoft rolls out an AMD variant. I really, really wanted the Surface Laptop 5 to land on our best 15-inch laptops page, but unfortunately, it will be left out in the cold. Instead of the Surface Laptop 5, we recommend the M2 MacBook Air or the Acer Swift 5. Both offer at least 11 hours of battery life (compared to the Surface Laptop 5’s measly nine hours) and deliver impressive performance.

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 is a good laptop sold at the wrong price. It’s a bit shocking to see Microsoft ask for an MSRP of nearly $1,300 for a 13.5-inch laptop with just 8GB of RAM, a mid-tier Intel processor, and integrated graphics. Both the Apple MacBook Air M2 and MacBook Pro 13 M2, while priced at $1,500, still blow it out of the water when it comes to processing speed, enough to make spending $200 more worth it. Windows competitors like the Dell XPS 13 also put the Surface Laptop 5 to shame. While the XPS 13 we reviewed was a bit slower than the Laptop 5, it was also less expensive. A similarly priced configuration will have a much more capable Intel Core i7 processor, 32GB of RAM, and a 1TB solid state drive—a more potent combo that still retails for $50 less than the Surface. Microsoft frequently discounts the Surface Laptop 5, which can make it more competitive, but it still tends to underperform on value. It’s a shame because I genuinely like the Surface Laptop 5. It’s an attractive laptop with a good keyboard, responsive touchpad, and decent battery life. As mentioned, I’ve personally used a Surface Laptop for years. When compared to modern peers, though, its modest performance and limited feature set are dealbreakers.
