Reviews for the Microsoft Surface Pro 4, Core m3
Fourth Time's a Charm. The highly-anticipated fourth rendition of Microsoft’s Surface Pro is finally here, and it brings some valuable refinements. Thanks to a low-power Core m3 CPU, our review unit is completely devoid of moving parts—making this more tablet than ever before. But is it finally the tablet than can replace your laptop, or is it just another product of compromise?

With various iOS and Android tablets, ChromeOS, Windows and Linux powered laptops at my disposal, the Surface Pro 4 was the one device I opted to take with me on a trip to Japan this fall. In considering usability, weight, battery life and all else I would need to not only play, but work a little, including clear my camera’s microSD card each day, Microsoft’s tablet was my choice, and I did not regret it at all. I could have used greater battery life a couple days processing photos, but in the end, I was easily able to get by with this one machine for a week.

There is a great deal to like and rave about the Surface Pro 4. The design is thinner and lighter for starters. The screen is awesome, there's plenty of power available, the new Surface Pen is better and the Type Cover is a vast improvement on the last one. However, the design is inherently awkward at times, it's more expensive that a lot of laptops and the Type Cover, which you'll pretty much need, isn't included lowering the value.

Has Microsoft at last crafted a tablet that can reasonably, without considerable compromise, replace your laptop? Short of going back to the drawing board on the battery, this looks as close as it's going to get.

We'll have much more on the Surface Pro 4 in our full review, including battery life tests and impressions. So far we're pleasantly surprised with this entry-level model: if a slightly lighter and silent PC appeals to you, and your workflow isn't significantly more intense than the one we described here, you may be better off with this model than you expected.
