Reviews for the Microsoft Surface Pro 7
The Surface Pro 7 features the best of what Microsoft has to offer. However, the Core i7 CPU might not be worth its price premium under all circumstances. In this particular case more CPU power also means more GPU power.

Microsoft might well argue that it hasn’t neglected the Surface Pro 7. It’s added USB Type-C and upgraded the internals, too, but all the evidence points to a hybrid that’s badly in need of an update. The design is still nice, as ever, but it’s beginning to look dated. Meanwhile, the new silicone inside seems to be limited by the chassis. To cap it off, battery life is less impressive than I’d like it to be. Heck, Microsoft couldn’t even be bothered to borrow the neat docking system for the Surface Pen from the Surface Pro X – it still mounts magnetically to the side of the tablet whereas the Pro X has a handy pen-sized slot at the top of the keyboard. The Microsoft Surface Pro 7 is perfectly serviceable, don’t get me wrong, but it’s a marginal update that fails in any way to get the pulse racing.

We expected a bit more in advancements from the seventh Surface Pro tablet. USB-C is nice, but for a device at this price, its should be Thunderbolt 3. Plus, the display bezels are awfully thick for a tablet in 2019. The Surface Pro 7 isn’t big enough of a leap over the Pro 6 for us to recommend it to either upgraders or folks just getting into Microsoft’s tablet.

Lastly, I think 12.3″ is a bit small these days, honestly. I would like to see a more “professional” Surface Pro one day that brings back active cooling, gives us a 14″+ screen, and actually hits 8+ hours of battery life. When that happens, maybe I’ll give the SP lineup another go. For now, this one is going up on eBay.

While the Pro 7 is another fine entry in the line and tops among mainstream Windows tablets, I wouldn't tell Surface Pro 6 users to run out and get one. But if you're working with something older, or this type of device would make your working-at-home experience better, it's still one of the best 2-in-1s available. There hasn't been much worthy competition in the time since release, though the coming Lenovo ThinkPad X12 Detachable has our attention. The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 is better all around as a laptop, if that's your primary concern, but the Surface Pro sets the bar for 2-in-1s in the Windows-tablet mode.

When it was time to pack the Surface Pro up and send it back I felt a twang of sadness. I’m used to using devices for a short while and returning them, but it isn’t often that I get attached. This time I did. I could easily see myself using the Surface Pro as my “work” device. While it is a tablet, it honestly felt just as good as a laptop and offered slightly more with its ability to turn into a notebook when I needed it for meetings or broadcast work. Its versatile and I think could easily look at it as a possible replacement for my MacBook with my desktop being my go to if needed for my heavy video editing.

Microsoft itself knows that the Surface Pro line is getting a little stale, which is why it launched the Surface Pro X alongside. This lighter, slicker model is based on an Arm CPU, not a traditional Intel/ x86 one, which means there might be some incompatibilities and adjustments in the near term, but it is a sign of things to come. The Surface Pro 7 thus serves a shrinking niche. It's still a great portable computer, but it isn't for everyone.

The Surface Pro 7 is ideal for those in the Windows ecosystem who need a device that is both powerful and mobile. But I am not sure you should look at this option if the portability is not something you really want. But the way Microsoft has made this, usability and convenience is not really an issue.

Still the best Windows 2-in-1 around, but it remains ahead due to the lack of highly recommendable alternatives. The performance upgrade here is excellent, but design-wise the huge bezels now look dated and Microsoft's dedication to Surface Connect is somewhat puzzling.

The Surface Pro 7 is arguably the best windows tablet money can buy, it’s just not that big a leap over the Surface Pro 6.

If you’re going to get the use out of the portability and flexible nature of the 2-in-1, the Surface Pro 7 is well worth considering, especially with the upgrades on offer compared to the Pro 6, but there are more powerful laptops at a similar price if processing power is key.
