Reviews for the Motorola Moto G22

There’s plenty to like about the Moto G22, but there’s also a lot to dislike. You won’t find a phone at this price that looks anywhere near as good, the battery life is exceptional and I really liked the cameras. Not to mention that it also comes with a bloat-free stock Android installation. But then there are the downsides. The biggest problem is that the Moto G22’s performance is actually worse than the previous model, but the colour issues with the display shouldn’t be excused, either. You win some and you lose some, I suppose, but the Moto G22 really isn’t as good as it should have been.

Budget handsets are a key part of Motorola's smartphone portfolio, and its G range currently includes several models that cost less than £300 in the UK. At the start of the year I looked at the Moto G200, whose price tag of £399 at the time has now come down to £319.99. The Moto G22, which does not offer 5G, is even more affordable, costing just £129.99 (reduced from £149.99). It comes in two colours: Cosmic black, which I was sent to review, and Iceberg Blue.

The Moto G22 will attract some attention with its quad-camera setup and minimalistic design. The near-stock Android experience paired with a promise of three years of security updates sets the device apart in this price segment. The 5,000mAh battery is a useful feature to consider as well and the bundled 20W charger is a nice bonus. There are some other positive points too, such as the 90Hz refresh rate and the fact that you get Android 12. Unfortunately, these features aren't able to make up for the poor performance. Using the Moto G22 every day is not a pleasant experience as it tends to struggle with even basic tasks. The Moto G22 feels like a missed opportunity as it could have been a decent recommendation in this segment had Motorola focused more on delivering a smoother Android experience rather than trying to offer more rear cameras. If you are looking for alternatives in this price range, the Realme C31 (Review) and the Redmi 10 Prime are good options. If a clean software experience is important to you, the Nokia G21 (Review) is also worth a look.

While the Moto G22’s camera and battery life are solid and great respectively, neither are able to save it from its biggest weakness – an underpowered chipset that’s trying to do too much, particularly with Android 12 running at 90Hz. With so many competitively priced phones that offer similar features but with the advantage of more grunt under the hood, it’s tough to recommend.

For Rs 10,999, Motorola offers a lot of value for money. It has an eye-catching design that looks and feels premium. The phone manages to perform basic tasks effortlessly. Although the LCD panel is decent, the visual experience is strictly average. The Moto G22 comes with interesting camera specs. Its primary camera and the macro sensor perform extremely well in daylight, but the same cannot be said about the phone’s low-light performance. Its battery lasts more than a day on moderate usage, which is not bad at all. Overall, the Moto G22 makes for a great phone in the budget category. There are a lot of positives that can truly overshadow the cons. However, if you want a phone with faster performance and a better camera setup, consider spending a few thousand rupees and getting the Moto G52.Live TV

The Moto G22 is very cheap, lasts a long time between battery charges, and comes with the latest Android 12 software. Apart from that nothing else really impresses, but as this is currently one of the cheapest smartphones you can buy, so perhaps it doesn't have to.

The Moto G22 is another solidly built budget phone from Motorola. No other manufacturer makes quite such tidy, classy hardware for such little money. Combined with stock Android 12 software, it’s one of the cleanest-looking cheap phones on the market. However, its atrocious performance and poor display make it tough to recommend. We’re not expecting tip-top high-end gaming performance from a phone that costs less than £150, but we do expect it to be able to handle basic menu and homescreen navigation without constant stutters. It makes the mere provision of a 90Hz display option seem like a cruel joke. Talking of that display, it’s one of the weaker examples we’ve seen of late, with a mere 720p resolution and poor peak brightness. It’s a shame, because the Moto G22’s camera is competent for the money, its battery life is extremely strong – and, of course, it’s so very cheap. But spending just a smidgen more money will get you a far more fluid experience.

In my first impressions, I said that the Motorola Moto G22 punches above its weight and after a full review it still feels like an understatement. The smartphone checks all the right boxes and despite its performance and hardware limitations, gives an experience which does not feel entry-level at all. That being said, while it is a multipurpose smartphone that does everything pretty decent, including running COD Mobile, it should be remembered that it is still a budget smartphone which will struggle with apps with large size, multitasking and taking high-quality Instagram-worthy images. If you are used to a Rs. 15,000 - Rs. 20,000 smartphone, it will feel like a downgrade, but if you are aware of what you usually get in its budget range, be prepared to be pleasantly surprised.

Motorola hasn't skimped on the cameras on the Moto G22. The four on the back include a 50-megapixel primary, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide, a 2-megapixel macro, and a 2-megapixel depth camera. The G22 also has a 16-megapixel selfie camera. On paper, the cameras seem as though they should be able to handle basic photography quite well but we'll know for sure after testing them in the full review. The Moto G22 is an interesting offering that's priced well considering the features it offers. The bundled 20W charger, guaranteed security updates for the next three years and a high resolution selfie camera are things that not many offer in this price range, not in a single product anyway. It's the combination of such features that makes the G22 a little unique. However, you'll need to wait for the full review to find out if the G22's performance is equally good and if you should even consider buying it. That's coming up soon.
