It falls a little flat when it comes to the camera, but that's a common shortcoming across flip phones. Setting cost aside, this is probably the best phone on the market right now. The cameras are capable, the battery life and chipset are good enough, and the full-size cover display lives up to the promise of the form factor. The only real downside is that we still don’t trust Motorola when it comes to software support. Even if it did get its act together, Motorola's three-year promise would lag behind Samsung’s.

To say that I'm impressed with the Motorola Razr Plus 2024 is a bit of an understatement. Motorola actually listened and addressed the biggest shortcomings of last year's model, giving us better battery life, better cameras, better hardware, and even a better cover screen experience. The 2023 model already seemed ahead in many ways, setting a standard for the flip phone category that was once established by Samsung. Now, Motorola is using the Razr Plus 2024 to solidify itself in the foldable space with a flip phone that's almost perfect. Of course, no phone is perfect, and the Razr Plus 2024 may not be enticing to everyone, especially after swapping the ultrawide camera for a telephoto lens. However, if that doesn't bother you, I feel like many of my biggest gripes can (and likely will) be addressed with some software updates. Even with the Galaxy Z Flip 6 right behind it, I have a feeling the Razr Plus 2024 will be the best flip phone of the year.

Last year’s Razr Plus was one of my personal favorite smartphones, though my recommendation of it came with some caveats. As much as I enjoyed using it, I also recognized that it had numerous shortcomings. Its cameras were disappointing, its battery life was lacking, and the hinge trailed behind the competition. I was OK looking past those things, but if someone asked me which folding flip phone they should buy, I’d reluctantly recommend the Galaxy Z Flip 5. The Motorola Razr Plus 2024 retains the fun and charm of its predecessor while improving upon it in virtually every way. The hinge feels better and more reliable. The cover display is larger. Camera quality is significantly improved. Battery life is longer. Charging speeds are faster.

Put simply, the Motorola Razr+ stands a good chance of being my favorite flip-style phone this year, too. The improvements in the camera and cover screen are huge, and really make this foldable feel complete and ready for the masses. If rumors about Samsung's Flip 6 ambitions are true, the Razr+ will still have a larger external cover screen than its Galaxy rival. Size isn't everything but, by addressing most of the concerns from last year, Motorola has not only made a foldable that works as successfully closed as it does open, but a contender for best Android device of 2024.

To say that I'm impressed with the Motorola Razr Plus 2024 is a bit of an understatement. Motorola actually listened and addressed the biggest shortcomings of last year's model, giving us better battery life, better cameras, better hardware, and even a better cover screen experience. The 2023 model already seemed ahead in many ways, setting a standard for the flip phone category that was once established by Samsung. Now, Motorola is using the Razr Plus 2024 to solidify itself in the foldable space with a flip phone that's almost perfect. Of course, no phone is perfect, and the Razr Plus 2024 may not be enticing to everyone, especially after swapping the ultrawide camera for a telephoto lens. However, if that doesn't bother you, I feel like many of my biggest gripes can (and likely will) be addressed with some software updates. The Razr 40 Ultra was a very capable clamshell foldable with just a few minor imperfections. This new generation addresses some of those complaints and brings yet other improvements. Most notable, perhaps, is the introduction of a proper IPX8-rating, which brings the Razr's water resistance up to the Galaxy Z Flip level. The Moto is without competition in its market segment when it comes to charging speed, its displays are likely the best in its class, and its speakers are better than most (foldables or otherwise). The software implementation on the cover screen is one 2x button in the camera UI short of perfection, and Hello UI is easy to like in its entirety as well. Motorola is taking a bit of gamble with the camera setup - or is it a calculated strategy?

This seemed very cool, and it was an Android offering to compete against Apple Intelligence. The Razr 40 Ultra was a very capable clamshell foldable with just a few minor imperfections. This new generation addresses some of those complaints and brings yet other improvements. Most notable, perhaps, is the introduction of a proper IPX8-rating, which brings the Razr's water resistance up to the Galaxy Z Flip level. The Moto is without competition in its market segment when it comes to charging speed, its displays are likely the best in its class, and its speakers are better than most (foldables or otherwise). The software implementation on the cover screen is one 2x button in the camera UI short of perfection, and Hello UI is easy to like in its entirety as well. Motorola is taking a bit of gamble with the camera setup - or is it a calculated strategy?

This seemed very cool, and it was an Android offering to compete against Apple Intelligence. However, like Apple Intelligence, it isn’t available yet, but I’m eagerly waiting for Motorola to release this feature. It's no exaggeration to call the new Razr two phones in one: a high-end Android flagship and a tiny minimalist phone, blended into a single foldable that reminds us that, oh right: technology can be (should be) fun!

With all that out of the way, it certainly sounds like the Motorola Razr (2024) is the best thing since sliced bread, at least if you can live without a few early AI features. Either way, the fact is that both the Motorola Razr Plus and the regular ol’ Razr are excellent this year, and both look capable of beating out Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 6, which has barely changed since the Flip 5. As a Razr Plus fanboy, I expected to love Motorola’s top flip phone, but I’m finding the vanilla Razr is far easier to recommend, and I’d dare to call it the best value we’ve seen from a foldable phone available in the US.

In its favor, it has outstanding battery life, a playful and flexible design, excellent inner and outer screens, and capable software from Motorola. We wish the performance were quicker and the cameras were sharper, but for $700, the Razr is a good entry point to folding phones. Upgrading to the Razr+ for $300 more gets you much faster performance, a larger external screen, and a more useful zoom camera. At that price, it's also worth considering the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5, especially if you use other Samsung devices.

If you're focused on power and performance above all else, you can find much better deals than the new Motorola Razr for $700. The OnePlus 12R and the Pixel 8a are significantly cheaper, and even Google's flagship Pixel 8 Pro is routinely on sale for just $50 more than this device. But if you're interested in a foldable, you probably aren't seeking the best specs or impressive cameras. Frankly, this is a pretty solid midrange phone built into a flip phone chassis, and that's really all it needs to be. It's a novelty, sure, but whether you're interested in the smaller folded form factor or you find this sort of device fashionable, it's pretty great to see a clamshell phone as good as this one available for just $700 — and that's before Motorola's inevitable sales. While I think most Android Police readers would be better served by the $1,000 Razr+, if you're interested in picking up a foldable without breaking the bank, this new Razr might be the way to go.
