Little number 1. The Nokia 1 is the entry-level model into the world of smartphones: under 100 Euros (~$115), a small format, and even a replaceable battery. Find out in this review whether the Nokia 1 is good enough for everyday use.

For its launch price, the Nokia 1 is a difficult sell. With poor screen quality, paltry performance, and poky specifications, it doesn't offer much in the way for value for money. As a smartphone it fails, but as an 'advanced' feature phone it excels.

It turns out that HMD can still manage to make a $149 Nokia device like this one somewhat-compelling, even when you consider the inevitable wrinkles and caveats in play.

The Nokia1 provides more than I expected. It is a competent phone, hardy, the screen is OK, and battery life should give a full 24-hour day.

Nokia 1 might seem like a good proposition on paper, especially with Android Go edition. However, the phone is hard to recommend as it fails to impress when it comes to actual performance. Nokia 1 faces solid competition from Redmi 5A (which one can get for under Rs 5,000 in offline markets), which has better performance in a similar price range. The only highlight here is the stock Android version of Oreo Go edition, though the price makes this seem expensive compared to the competition.

The Nokia 1 is available in Australia through Harvey Norman and JB Hifi for $149, with the Xpress-on Covers also available in a range of colours from $19.95 each. It’s a heck of a price for a decent phone where the software experience is essentially controlled by Google.

Android Go Edition is finally here and the Nokia 1 offers Oreo in a very cheap phone that’s got a colourful and fun design. The idea here is good, offering more available storage and data saving apps.

But, on the other hand, there are no other such phones being sold at retailers in Australia. This makes the Nokia 1 pretty easy to recommend to anyone looking for a sub-$200 smartphone, as it's the only way you're going to get a brand new device with up-to-date Android. The only alternative would be to hit up eBay for a used Samsung Galaxy S4 or similar, and while that would certainly get you as nicer screen, more competent camera and similar performance compared to the Nokia 1, you'd also be stuck on Android 5.0.1 Lollipop (meaning incompatibility with newer apps and features), have years-old security updates (meaning vulnerability to hackers) and various other issues that come with using a five-year-old device (like failing batteries).

The Nokia 1 is a good smartphone for those who want an upgrade from a feature phone segment. At a price of Rs. 5,499, it has a pure Android experience, Nokia branding and that’s about it. With extra Rs. 500, you can get the Xiaomi Redmi 5A, that has some additional features as well as better camera and battery life.

Its intentions may be noble, its design might be delightfully retro, and the brand behind it might be formidable, but the Nokia 1 has definitely got its work cut out if it wants to be your first smartphone.

The Nokia 1 just doesn't offer a lot for its asking price. And pricing is perhaps my biggest issue with the phone. As an Android Go device, we hoped that HMD would price it well under Rs 5,000, like the Lava Z50. But at Rs 5,499, the company is playing with fire because at this price, the Nokia 1 will compete against phones like Redmi 5A and 10.or D, both of which offer a lot more on paper and in real-world usage. The Nokia 1 stands nowhere close, and while it does promise timely Android updates, that's probably not enough to attract the highly-competitive budget market.

For around the $100 mark, the Nokia 1 is still a great choice, particularly in Western markets. HMD hasn't detailed availability plans for the U.S. just yet, but the phone is set to make its way to the UK in just over a month. In the meantime, if you're looking for an Android Go phone in the U.S., you'll have to wait until ZTE's Tempo Go is back in stock.

The biggest issue with the Nokia 1 is the Rs. 5,499 sticker price. If this smartphone had been priced somewhere in the vicinity of 3,000 to 4,000 rupees, it could have been a viable option for feature phone users looking to upgrade. Jio users can take a look at the cashback offer which effectively drops the price of the phone down to Rs 3,299, but others should definitely take a long, hard look at the competition before parting with their hard-earned cash, as there are plenty of other options in the sub-Rs. 10,000 price segment.

The Nokia 1 is an inexpensive Android smartphone, and you very much get what you pay for. If you have a bit more extra cash, I would suggest getting the Nokia 3. If your budget doesn’t stretch that far, the Nokia 1 is still a good choice. The device is definitely usable; you can check your email, use social media, and even play games.

HMD Global has announced an international price of $85 which comes to roughly Rs. 5,500 before taxes. At that price, it will be hard to justify not spending a tiny amount more for a much more powerful and versatile phone such as the Xiaomi Redmi 5A (considering its official Rs. 5,999 price tag, though it currently sells for only Rs. 4,999 as part of an introductory offer). Nokia might have gotten the look and feel right, but this pricing means that it isn't chasing the same goal as other Android Go devices. It will appeal to those who are reassured by the Nokia brand and want a simple no-frills phone.

The asking price might be cheap, but the Nokia 1 Plus asks you to make plenty of compromises in return. The feel and form-factor is right here, but performance often leaves too much to be desired. It’s not an uncommon compromise, and in the right situations, I can see it doing the trick. Nevertheless, this feels like a tired refrain. The Nokia 1 Plus is a budget phone that takes the usual shortcuts, but ends up hitting all the expected roadblocks regardless. It's really good for the price but it doesn't take that much more to get that much better.

The Motorola Moto E5 and Nokia's own 3.1 Plus are only £130 SIM-free, and they run the full version of Android. Sure, you're looking at almost twice the price, but if you'll be using it as your main phone, even the small step up in performance is worth the extra.

While the Nokia 1 Plus may offer a significant value because it packs pretty much the full Android 9 experience for a low price, it’s difficult to recommend since it is such an inconsistent experience. If you're using the device as just a texting and calling machine, it could work for you. But if you’re coming into the 1 Plus expecting to be able to have a flashy and fun full Android phone experience, you’ll likely be disappointed, even with the Nokia 1 Plus' affordable price tag in mind. You can buy the Nokia 1 Plus outright starting today from London Drugs and Best Buy Canada for $179.99 CAD.

The bottom line is the higher price of the Nokia 1 Plus due to its admirable software support is too much to justify when compared to the raw hardware value of its competition; hopefully Nokia can bring more RAM – and thus full Android – down to the $100 price bracket next and then they might just have an argument worthy of consideration.

It’s a bit of a shame to end on such a damp note, since the Nokia 1.4 really isn’t half bad for the price. A phone that costs less than £100 is always going to be treading water, but the Nokia 1.4 comes off quite well, even if it fails to do anything particularly noteworthy. There are better-value options if you’re willing to dip into triple figures, though. Samsung’s Galaxy A21s is still a terrific choice for the budget-savvy buyer, and the Moto G10 is excellent value at £130 as well. However, the Nokia 1.4 finds itself in a league of its own. There’s no other smartphone on the market that costs less than £100, and if your buying budget can’t stretch very far, you’ll really struggle to do any better than this.

Overall, for the price of P4,990, you’ll get the Android Go Edition, 2-year Android support, sturdy and durable build, and long-lasting battery life. The rest have fairly decent performance and will surely help you with day-to-day social media usage. Nokia 1.4 is a notable budget-friendly device that will give satisfaction and long usability not just in one fully charged battery, but also for a couple of years thanks to sturdy and compact built. I appreciate Nokia phones running on stock android, and even in a Go Edition, the experience is seamless. I guess I will continue using this device as a backup daily driver as it will surely last for a year or so.

The Nokia 1.4 is not without flaws. But it is a good option for a budget phone with its large display, fast and secure operating system designed for low-capacity internals, elegant design, and other user-friendly features. It fits casual users who want their device capable of doing essential tasks smoothly and easily. However, it’s also important to note that for the same price point—give or take a few hundred pesos—realme and Xiaomi offer slightly higher-specced budget smartphones (realme C11 and Redmi 9C/9A, respectively). Or if you add a thousand pesos or two, you can get a higher Nokia model that brings significantly better performance and more up-to-date features.
