Reviews for the Nokia 9 PureView
HMD Global went the extra mile with its brand-new Nokia 9 PureView flagship and equipped it with a total of five lenses for the main camera in order to achieve superior image quality. It is not just the camera though, the rest of the device features even more high-end hardware. Find out in our review whether or not the Nokia 9 PureView lives up to its own expectations.

While the Nokia 9 PureView offers an innovative and intriguing multi-camera architecture, and perhaps a glimpse of the future, it isn’t able to use its five-camera rear camera to distinguish itself when used in the default modes that we test, and that are the modes most users stick with. However, it does have a variety of unique capabilities like dedicated black and white sensors, and a multi-image super-resolution mode suitable for extensive post processing. Nokia has also done an excellent job working with Adobe to provide Lightroom Mobile support for the Nokia 9’s unique features. Having depth maps integrated with Google Photos also allows Nokia 9 users to re-focus their images after the fact, which also sets it apart from most other cameras on the market today. Unless you plan to take advantage of its specialized features, though, the PureView 9’s camera isn’t on a par with its competitors.

When HMD Global first showed me the Nokia 9 PureView, I instantly fell in love. The phone looks great, feels great, has an excellent display, and covers all the basics in terms of high-end features. You’ll find an attractive metal-and-glass body with plenty of storage, water resistance, wireless charging, and a clean version of Android. These are all good things. I would recommend the Nokia 9 PureView to Nokia fans and photography fanatics with the caveat that the fingerprint reader and camera app aren’t operating at 100% just yet. After HMD Global provides the promised update, we will revisit our review as needed to make the proper adjustments.

At R13 999 (RRP) the Nokia 9 PureView is one the "cheaper" flagships on the market. It's camera setup, battery life and operating system are the clear standout elements here, but I question whether that is enough to compete with the likes of what Samsung and Huawei have been able to muster this year already.

The Nokia 9 PureView feels like a great foundation for the next generation of Nokia devices, but it doesn’t feel like a foundation I’m rushing to lean on just yet.

The Nokia 9 PureView is ambitious about mobile photography, and commendably packs five rear cameras that combine shots into a single image. But the resulting photos don't quite outclass those in pricier flagships, and the rest of the phone's features are middling, leaving it more a niche device for consumers who want a less-expensive camera-focused solution.

The new Nokia 9 PureView is a commitment to a single idea: with five lenses taking one HDR photo, you can add the most detail ever to regular photos. With an otherwise respectable, but not impressive list of specs, Nokia is going after mobile photo fans with high-quality photos and software, but will that be enough?

I can’t say the Nokia 9 PureView has a bad camera. It’s just undeserving of all the hype surrounding it. It does, however, have some cool features you will enjoy, and its shots are not half bad. Regardless, I would rather see Nokia go back to larger sensors, as opposed to multiple.

It would seem that the big thing about the Nokia 9 Pureview’s multi-camera array is its extremely clean low-noise images. That can be a really great thing. Unfortunately, the camera lacks in other areas such as dynamic range where highlights often get blown out. The LED flash is unusable compared to the Xenon flash of the original Nokia 808 Pureview, Nokia Lumia 1020 Pureview, and even the Nokia N8 from 2010. The depth sensing and fake background blurring filter is better than most of the other phones that try to do this, but it’s still unreliable and unacceptable to anyone who cares about image quality. I would still consider the Nokia 9 worthy of the Pureview moniker due to how little noise there can be in some of the pictures, but I feel like I would have preferred multiple focal length lens/camera combinations.

If you’re someone who is very serious about photography, you’re better off buying a proper camera and editing your photos on your computer. And if you just want to be able to snap great-looking pictures with your phone and like the Android One experience, then a Pixel phone will be a better fit. If the price goes down and Nokia fixes the software issues that are plaguing the phone, it might be worth a consideration, but until then, there’s no objective reason to pick the Nokia 9 over the available alternatives.

The Nokia 9 is full of potential, but the failure to utilize it is evident in every aspect of the phone. We can easily forgive the previous generation of hardware because of that fantastic screen and lower price, but the camera didn't live up to the promise and expectations.

The Nokia 9 PureView sports a Snapdragon 845 processor, 6GB of RAM, Android 9 Pie and a 3,320mAh battery. I thought the 9 PureView ran pretty quickly, though I didn’t get the chance to truly put it through its paces. That said, its 2018 processor is definitely not on par with phones like the S10 and the LG G8 with their Snapdragon 855 chipset. Additionally, the device runs Android One, a near-stock version of Android used by many of the company’s other handsets. Alongside a 2018 processor the 9 PureView sports wireless charging. The Nokia 9 PureView isn’t the best out there, nor is it the showiest, but it can take a good picture.

The Nokia 9 PureView is a beautiful phone from HMD Global that aims high with its unique imaging features. The five-camera array developed with Light and Zeiss was perhaps too ambitious, as the camera app on our review unit performed poorly and the resulting images didn't quite meet expectations. Practically everything else is great and HMD says the Nokia 9 will only get better over time.

With its design and processor lagging behind the competition, the 9 PureView is likely to stand or fall based on whether or not the photo output lives up to Nokia’s hype. If it does, this could be a popular choice for phone photographers, but if it can’t stand out then this will feel like little more than a relic of 2018.

So much of what makes up the Nokia 9 PureView feels heavily entrenched in 2018 hardware, suggesting that the phone’s appeal and success leans almost entirely on that intriguing new camera array.

The Nokia 9 PureView is a photo machine, no doubt about it, but what else it offers is still to be seen. There have already been a few phones launched in 2019 that have better specifications, such as the S10 and the Mate 20 Pro, but worse still, that's also the case for most of 2018's flagships.

HMD Global said the Nokia 9 PureView will be available in “limited quantities” in our meeting. It won’t have an ongoing manufacturing line, which means there will be a relatively limited number available. HMD Global wouldn’t provide guidance on just how “limited” the Nokia 9 PureView may be. Bottom line, if this phone interests you — and it should — don’t hesitate to grab one as quickly as you can.

On first impressions we're excited by the Nokia 9 PureView - not least because it's priced more approachably than many rivals - but we're quietly cautious. Treading your own path might be the way to get noticed, but you also run the risk of getting lost.

You’ll be able to pick the Nokia 9 PureView up at the reduced price from all official retail channels. That includes Best Buy, AmazonSEEAMAZON_ET_135 See Amazon ET commerce, and B&H Photo. The sale runs from March 3rd to the 10th, at which time the price goes back up to $699.99. It’s GSM/LTE unlocked, so it will work on AT&T or T-Mobile in the US.

The Nokia 9 Pureview is priced at $699 or roughly around Php 36,400. We’re hoping that the local arm prices this device near this price point (or lower) if or when it reaches our store shelves. If they do, we think that it’ll be a solid option for folks who are big on mobile photography and willing to get over their phobia.

The Nokia Lumia 1020 was the biggest breakthrough in smartphone photography of its time. With cameras out now from the likes of Google and Huawei, we were skeptical about Nokia and whether it'd be able to raise the bar in smartphone photography. We have to say that we're blown away by this camera and are excited for what the future of smartphone optics has in store.
