The term "feature phone" was a way of differentiating phones that went beyond the texting and calling features that defined early cellphones. A feature phone might have access to email, or an MP3 player, or have a built-in radio. They did more, and were more expensive, but didn't reach the full-blown premium computer prices of modern smartphones. The CMF Phone 1's "feature" is its accessory system and ability to be customized more than the average phone, and they're worth paying for in my book. And the good thing is, even if you never attach a kickstand to the Phone 1, you'll probably still be happy with how it works as a normal smartphone. Nothing's first budget, the CMF Phone 1, is a solid Android phone with a unique system for attaching and detaching accessories like a kickstand, lanyard, and wallet.

I’ve got to hand it to Nothing because the CMF Phone 1 is a refreshing take on what a budget phone should offer. For less than $250, its adaptable design, colorful screen, long battery life and fast charging sets the tone for all other budget phones in this price range. The only area I’m really disappointed about is its camera performance, which for some could be a dealbreaker. I can’t expect CMF Phone 1 to reach iPhone 16 Pro Max or Galaxy S24 Ultra levels, but at least get closer to what the Pixel 8a delivers at its price point. This is the one compromise you’re going to need to make. Otherwise, it’s an excellent phone that ticks off a lot of the boxes of what I want in a phone.

Even though the raw benchmark numbers can’t beat some competitors out there, the CMF Phone 1 returns the favour with an affordable price, water and dust protection, and a pleasant display to use. While we cannot change the camera's middling performance, the next closest alternative is the Nothing Phone (2a), which has appreciably better camera quality and more performance to boot. If you have a strict phone budget and can't spend more than S$400, the CMF Phone 1 should be your first port of call before considering other alternatives. You don't have to participate in its 'modular design' revolution, but it's a nice option to personalise the phone further while keeping it tasteful and making budget phones a tad more exciting, too.

As for software support, Nothing has promised 2 years of major Android upgrades and 3 years of security updates. This is below expectations. Even phones under Rs. 20,000 today offer 2 years of software upgrades. Samsung is the best when it comes to software support, providing 4 years of upgrades, even for budget phones priced between Rs. 25,000 and Rs. 30,000. CMF should learn from them.

In Nothing CMF Phone 1 smartphone everything from the design to performance to the camera is fantastic. It has support replaceable back cover and accessories, which provides enhanced customization options. You are certainly getting more for what you are paying. The design is the most fascinating part of the smartphone and it will attract a lot of attention from other users. The display is also quite decent and is perfect for watching movies and TV series. The chipset is also quite fast and can play many games smoothly without any major issues. The same goes for the camera, battery, charging, and other aspect of the phone. It even has 5G connectivity, which is surprising considering the price of the phone. You will also find a fingerprint sensor for biometric authentication, which is quite rare in a phone that costs so low.

So, should you go for the CMF Phone 1? The phone does very well on the camera, performance, and software fronts (bugs aside), but its real strength is its design and that removable back. So if you are mainly looking for seriously edgy design and the ability to tinker around with back covers and modular elements at a relatively affordable price, and also have the patience to unscrew that back panel and replace it, then the CMF Phone 1 is perfect for you. However, if you are looking for serious value for money and mainstream phone features, then the absence of a charger in the box and even a 3.5 mm audio jack could be potential deal breakers. There is no doubt that the CMF Phone 1 is the most different phone in its segment. But that is its blessing and its curse, depending on your perspective. It is an innovative apple among mid-segment oranges – great if you Think Different, not that great if you Think Regular. Pun intended? We are saying Nothing!

To conclude, the CMF Phone 1 offers an excellent value-for-money proposition for the users. It is good to see the swappable rear panels that will help change the look of the device. Hopefully, we can get more accessories from the company or third party to support this. The display looks good, and the performance is comparable to other phones in this price segment. The camera seems decent, if not great, at this price point. That said, the CMF Phone 1 will go against Moto G85, Redmi Note 13, Infinix Note 40, OnePlus Nord CE 4 Lite, and more.

The CMF Phone 1 by Nothing is near-revolutionary in many ways. Not only is it a mere $200 out the door — not subsidized by a carrier to $200 after a trade-in — but it's just an amazing phone all-around. Combine fast processing, an excellent camera, superb multitasking, and a fantastic operating system experience with the unique qualities of the modular design and we have a real winner on our hands. There's no denying that a lack of NFC is going to hurt the phone's chances of success. As good as everything else is, NFC is a basic requirement for lots of people who have grown used to securely paying for things with their phones. Not only that, but 5G coverage in the U.S. is spotty at best and nonexistent, at worse, because of Nothing's choice of an older modem.

When we look back at all of these fancy tricks that the CMF Phone 1 can make, we kinda pause and think, rather, ask the question – are these necessary or practical? Do they add value to the user? What’s the long-term play? If you asked us. What we can say is – IT IS FUN! We needed something new, even if it’s as simple as having an inter-changeable back cover. As long as these additions and attachments aren’t too expensive, I’m sure it will be a hit. Perhaps, the only drawback here is that because of the removable cover, the CMF Phone 1 is only rated for IP52, the lowest we’ve ever seen in any modern smartphone. Will that be a deal breaker? We don’t think so. Mad props to CMF and Nothing for making smartphones exciting again!

The CMF Phone 1 is the most impressive and unique budget phone that I have tried in years. It’s no easy feat to make something exciting and appealing at such a low price point, but Nothing has done so with finesse. This phone looks and feels like it should be twice the price, and despite a few niggles, it’s easily the best software experience in its class. The performance is great, so long as you’re not expecting a top-tier gaming machine and the funky design, lovely display and unique modular accessories sweeten the deal, too. Of course, there are compromises at this price point. There’s no NFC, which means no Google Pay, and that could be a dealbreaker for some. The cameras are fine, but it’s not hard to find comparable quality and more lenses, at a similar price. It’s important to consider the competition, too.

With the Nothing CMF Phone 1, there are cost cuttings and yes, buying accessories and a charger for the CMF Phone 1 will bring the price up. But even at a sub-₹20,000 price tag, the CMF Phone 1 still offers pretty decent value. Yes, above a ₹20,000 price tag it may not make sense but if you want a clean software with decent performance and a differentiating element in your smartphone, the CMF Phone 1 is very easy to recommend. Nothing is a brand that has, since its inception in 2020, tried to challenge the landscape when it comes to smartphone design. From introducing the “Glyph” interface, to giving us a rather unique monochrome UI, the company has now gone one step ahead with its CMF line of affordable products with the latest offering, the CMF Phone 1.

The CMF Phone 1 is basically relegated to the realm of affordable smartphones. These models pull out all the stops on one or two key elements. They make heavy compromises on the rest. Xiaomi/Redmi focuses on fast charging and performance. Samsung focuses on its camera performance and software updates. CMF's focus is on the design. You can tell from the "Color, Material, Finish" name, and it cannot be faulted by sticking to its identity. So no, the CMF Phone 1's design isn't just window-dressing to hide its imperfections but remains its primary, best-selling point.

CMF Phone 1 is a bang for the buck offering despite its drawbacks, such as average camera performance, poor quality of back panels, and omission of some commonly found features in this segment, such as stereo speakers, OIS, NFC, Always-on display, in-box charger, and more. The handset is worth considering mainly because of how well rounded the software experience on the device is, which as of now, is the best in this segment as per our testing of other devices. While the replaceable back panels and the distinct look of the device is a welcome move, it's the software that stands out more for us rather than other aspects of the device, especially considering the starting price tag of Rs 15,999.

Today we durability test and take apart the new CMF Phone 1. A new budget device from the company Nothing. The CMF Phone 1 has user replaceable backs and a few accessories that can be screwed into the rear frame. So if you want to change the color of your phone on a moments notice - you can. However - thats where the modular ability stops. None of the internal components can be swapped out. The battery replacement and parts replacements still need to be 'done by a professional'.

Nothing has crafted an impressive smartphone that packs a punch inside and out for a phone that starts at just Rs 15,999. There’s something so unique about the design and modularity, and I’d love to see Nothing expanding to third-party accessories in the future. I am aware it’s not a flagship-grade smartphone, but not everyone wants one. A company like Nintendo has succeeded by not making the most advanced game consoles, and Nothing is taking a similar approach with the CMF Phone 1. All in all, I feel the CMF Phone 1 is downright fun.

The CMF Phone 1 can be yours at Rs 15,999 for the base 6GB RAM and 128GB storage variant. The top-end 8GB RAM option is priced at Rs 17,999. In terms of the competition, you have the Realme P1 (review) and Redmi Note 13 (review) smartphones. Both are priced around the same ballpark as the CMF offering and have some advantages of their own. The Redmi smartphone scores with its dedicated ultrawide lens, whereas the Realme P1 gets you good cameras, stereo speakers, and superior fast-charging tech. However, where both these smartphones, as well as a few pricier ones like the OnePlus Nord CE4 Lite (review), fall short compared to the CMF smartphone, is in their performance, software, and design.

Speaking broad strokes, with the CMF Phone 1, I came away from my time testing it impressed. Most of the things I had issues with, or that I found imperfect, were things I’d expect to see – and would generally be okay with – in a phone that cost anywhere between £300-£400 in the UK. But this phone costs much less. It’s pretty hard to imagine how Nothing is even making money on this phone. With its large, vibrant display, reliable everyday performance, attention to detail and cohesion in the software aesthetic, and camera quality, it’s a phone I’d happily use as my daily phone without too many issues. That’s a huge testament to what Nothing has achieved with this very affordable device. And to make it a phone that’s actually cool, and looks great? It’s a winning formula.

CMF by Nothing has finally introduced its maiden smartphone in India with the launch of CMF Phone 1. The newest smartphone from CMF comes with a price tag of Rs 15,999 for the 6GB RAM + 128GB storage option, while the 8GB RAM + 128GB model is priced at Rs 17,999. The phone also packs interesting features and specifications, including MediaTek Dimensity 7300 SoC, up to 8GB RAM, 50MP rear camera, 5,000mAh battery, and more. The phone is a new contender in the hottest-selling segment in India. Check out the first impressions to know more about what makes it unique.

The CMF Phone 1 is definitely worth buying due to its good value proposition. Priced at Rs 15,999, and effectively available for Rs 14,999 with bank card discounts, it is a great deal. The phone delivers solid performance and comes with a unique design. Its broad display with vibrant colours is perfect for binge-watching, and it can offer solid battery life as well. The camera performance is also good in its price range. You are getting a complete package at an affordable price. There are only a couple of things to note: the device comes with a single speaker and does not include a charger in the retail box. Accessories like the stand need to be purchased separately.

The CMF Phone 1 is a compelling option for those looking for a stylish, high-performance smartphone that doesn’t break the bank. Its standout design, impressive display, robust camera capabilities, and strong performance make it a great choice for early smartphone buyers and enthusiasts alike. The phone delivers on its promise of bringing great design and core functionalities to the forefront. While the lack of NFC is a minor drawback, the phone’s overall performance, design, and customizability more than make up for it. If you’re in the market for a new smartphone that offers both style and substance, the CMF Phone 1 is definitely worth considering.

The way we see it, aesthetics are kind of at the core of the CMF Phone 1. It is not the best value offer for the hardware it offers, nor does it shine in another particular manner, like with cameras. It is a well-rounded device that gets the job done without overachieving in any area (okay, it does offer excellent battery life). The display is also pretty great all-around, and the chipset offers solid performance for the class. On a less positive note, you get very minimal ingress protection, a singular, rather unimpressive speaker, no NFC and no charger in the box. However, the design is where this phone really stands out. In this respect, there is nothing else quite like the CMF Phone 1 out there. The extra customizability and repairability also hold a certain appeal. We have no doubt that the CMF Phone 1 will find its fanbase.

With respectable performance, a long-lasting battery and an OLED screen from a class above, the CMF Phone 1 nails the basics of a budget phone. It takes impressively nuanced photos, too – though I’m not convinced the secondary lens makes a colossal difference to portrait shots. That it then adds in support for modular accessories and cases, while keeping the price as low as it has, shows how far Nothing has come in a very short space of time. If you’re on a modest budget but don’t want a sub-par user experience, this should absolutely be your first port of call. Got a bit more money to spend, though? There are rivals that only cost slightly more, but promise an extra year of software support – meaning you can go longer until your next next upgrade.

Reviewing Nothing's CMF Phone 1, the best budget smartphone so far in 2024, with an unboxing and test of the cover accessories. I've been testing the CMF Phone 1 by Nothing for almost a week so here's my full thoughts on the camera tech, gaming performance, battery life and other bits. Here in the UK, this affordable mobile is priced at just over £200 (although the cases and extras come at an extra cost). You can customise the cover like old Lumia phones, but this isn't just a one-trick gimmick device. The CMF Phone 1 by Nothing is one of my favourite budget smartphones of 2024, helped along by the impressive Dimensity power which can handle Genshin Impact and other games.
