Reviews for the OnePlus 12R 5G

One last thing: while the Cool Blue OnePlus 12R model I've been testing is lovely, the back glass is very slick, so you should be cautious when handling it or setting it down on a table on its back. I used the review device for a month and could easily see it as my daily driver; it performs flawlessly, has an IP64 dust/water resistant rating and wet display tech so I can use it in rainy Washington, has ample storage and RAM, captures my ideal photos and videos, and has an exceptionally bright display. I'm not the biggest fan of the curved glass edges, but there is so much to like here, and that starting price of $499 (or $379 on Prime Day) is tough to beat.

Ultimately, what makes the Sunset Dune such an enticing option is that it doesn't cost any extra — it is available in a single 8GB/256GB model, and it costs ₹42,999 ($514) in India. Similar to other limited editions models released by OnePlus in recent years, the 12R Sunset Dune edition isn't making its way outside India. But if you're in the country and are looking to get a new phone, the styling of the Sunset Dune model is different enough that I can recommend it over the regular Cool Blue edition. To sweeten the deal, OnePlus is throwing in the Buds 3 with every purchase. While I like the Cool Blue 12R, I think the Sunset Dune model is a better choice if you need a phone that looks equal parts stylish and elegant. In my OnePlus 12R review, I said that the device is a much better value than the standard model, and that hasn't changed as we head to the tail end of 2024 — this is still one of the best mid-range phones available today.

Compared to the iPhone 13, the OnePlus 12R has a larger display with 120Hz refresh rate support. The battery life and charging speed are also better. Additionally, the OnePlus 12R supports 90fps on PUBG Mobile and may soon get 120fps support. In contrast, the iPhone 13 offers superior video quality and a great gaming experience, but its display is smaller, and the battery life is not as good. Moreover, the display brightness decreases when the phone gets hot.

The OnePlus 12R gets a lot of things right. It has a powerful chip, lots of RAM and storage, a bright display, great battery life, and a decent camera. But to price a mid-range phone like this in the RM3K range is a bit baffling given than some brands, like the one I’ve listed above, now have top-tier new flagships in this bracket. It feels like OnePlus didn’t do their market research on this one or it just assumed people wouldn’t wanna pay the price difference to get a flagship over the 12R. I say if it’s only a couple of hundred bucks and you’re already paying over RM3K, it’s more worth it in the long-term to get the more advanced phone with more features. In the end, while it’s a nice, well-balanced phone overall, there’s nothing about it that stands out and makes it worth the premium.

Now, the price of the OnePlus 12R is at RM3,199. I’d say the price is okay as OnePlus does offer their signature features like the alert slider. It also has a higher-than-usual resolution but is still below 1440p, while the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 still offers an amazing gaming experience. Combined with the larger 21.51Wh battery, this phone can last you through a day or maybe two on a single charge. And 4 years of software updates means it can last us for a long time. What’s lackluster about the OnePlus 12R is the cameras. Like what you saw earlier, they’re just not that good. While some people might say not having a charger in the box is also a problem – I’d say that’s not the main issue. The main issue is that OnePlus phones can only take in 17.5W via USB-PD. If OnePlus supports up to at least 45W of USB-PD, I’d actually support OnePlus’s decision to not include a charger in the box. It’s their own proprietary charging bullcrap that caused this problem.

While we understand that reasons for shaving some hardware of the OnePlus 12R compared to the OnePlus 12 — i.e. previous-gen chipset, UFS 3.1, absence of Hasselblad — the OnePlus 12R managed to hold on its own. However, once you factor in the retail price that almost matched that of last year’s OnePlus 11, we end up at predicament. By this time, the OnePlus 11 will be sold at a much lower price than its original 45K/49K SRP, maybe even way lower than the current SRP of the OnePlus 12R at Php44K. Then, consider that both the 11 and 12R have the same chipset, better UFS 4.0 storage tech, identical camera sensors but with Hasselblad engineering, and higher screen resolution, there’s very little advantage to get the OnePlus 12R from the OnePlus 11. Not that the OnePlus 12R does not deserve a Php 43,999 retail price (for the 16GB + 256GB variant), but it’s kind of a hard pill to swallow considering we all know it originally came from the $499 global announcement. Worth it? Yes. Is it a great deal? Not really.

The OnePlus 12R feels like a smartphone that shouldn’t exist. It feels too good to be true, a phone that bargain hunters can only dream about. But it is very real, and it’s really damn good. What are your other options beyond the OnePlus 12R? The flagship OnePlus 12 is also available, and it’ll give you a newer Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, better cameras, and wireless charging. The Google Pixel 8 has a far superior camera system, cool AI features, and seven years of software updates. But those phones cost $300 and $200 more than the OnePlus 12R, respectively, which is a significant difference.

At its starting price of Rs 39,999, the OnePlus 12R is a very good option for those who are looking for a high-end OnePlus experience but do not have the budget for the OnePlus 12. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor and superb display make it a very good gaming device, and its main camera delivers excellent images in good light. The Pixel 7a might deliver better images, the Nothing Phone (2) might look more noticeably different, and the iQOO Neo 9 Pro might deliver comparable (some might say better) specs at a lower price, but if you are looking for a OnePlus flagship experience at the most affordable possible price (and such is OnePlus’ aura in the market that many are looking for just that), then the One Plus 12R is the device for you. It may lack the flagship specs of the OnePlus 12, but it has the flagship-killing soul of the OnePlus.

Overall, the OnePlus 12 and OnePlus 12R are certainly two pretty decent offerings for the ultra high-end and upper mid-range markets, respectively. While the OnePlus 12 is an unapologetic flagship, the OnePlus 12R rivals regular flagships like the Pixel 7 and the Galaxy S24. It's an extremely decent offering that should be considered if you're not willing to shell out a lot of cash on a phone. Overall, the verdict is clear: if you want a real flagship, look no further than the OnePlus 12. Meanwhile, those on a tighter budget might consider the OnePlus 12R, which cuts some of the extra corners but still delivers the exemplar OnePlus experience.

If you're looking for judgment on the performance, camera quality, battery life — all of that — head back to our full OnePlus 12R Review. We found no significant difference between that version of the device and this special edition concerning its real-world functionality. It's still a very, very nice piece of hardware. If you're only looking for the most basic version of the 12R, get the 12R that costs around $500 — that'll be the 8GB/128GB version, and it'll come with the phone, charger, and USB cable. If you're planning on buying the 12GB/256GB version of the OnePlus 12R, you might want to consider the "Geshin Impact" version, if only because you get a unique purple set of accessories and a phone case.

The OnePlus 12R is a dead ringer for the more expensive OnePlus 12, but slightly thinner and lighter. It has the same dial-like camera module on the back, the trademark OnePlus alert slider, and an enormous LTPO OLED screen clad in Gorilla Glass Victus 2. On that last count, the OnePlus 12R stands out from the crowd a bit more than it would have a year or two ago. The 6.78-inch 120Hz OLED has curved edges, which other device makers like Google and Samsung have left behind. It makes the phone a bit more comfortable to hold, but you’ll have to deal with occasional accidental touches and light reflections on the curved surfaces. The panel itself is a bit of an oddball. The 2,780 x 1,264 resolution is between the standard 1,080p and 1,440p options.

If you love purple, hey, you're gonna love this phone. That AG glass back is purple, as are the papers, themes, accessories etc. Even the box itself is purple. The OnePlus 12R Genshin Impact Edition comes with a Keqing figure, pin badges, stickers, an exclusive special edition case and tons of extra bits. Beyond the unboxing, we also check out the extra software elements - including an interesting ringtone and more. Outside of the Genshin goodness, this is the same OnePlus 12R phone we know and like a lot. The OnePlus 12R is a sorely needed midrange contender in the US. It’s lacking some features you can find on its peers, like wireless charging and a beefier water resistance rating, but it brings enough to the table that it’s a legitimate alternative to the Pixel and Galaxy options. You won’t find another screen this big and this nice on a $500 phone sold in the US, for starters. Overall build quality is right up there with the best, even if the curved edges aren’t my favorite. Opting for Qualcomm’s previous-gen flagship chipset is a smart move, too. I like its long-term prospects better than the Tensor and Exynos chips in the competition. The Pixel 7A is probably still the better choice for photo quality, though I’m impressed with how narrow of a lead it has over the OnePlus. The 12R actually does better than the Pixel in some situations, like at the 2x zoom setting, but ultimately, the 7A offers a more consistent camera experience.

OnePlus made its bones in the mobile space by offering a solid Android phone at an undeniable value. The OnePlus 12R returns to this ethos in the truest form we’ve seen from the company in years. At $500 retail, and the $100 launch trade-in any device promotion, you can’t miss with this phone. If you can do without the Qi-charging, the OnePlus 12R is the best bang-for-your-buck Android device you can buy right now. This base price of $500 is available only in the Iron Gray edition like our review unit with the 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. You can jump the price to $600 for the 16GB/256GB in the sleek alternative of Cool Blue or the Iron Gray. Retail pre-order partners include Amazon and Best Buy, and of course OnePlus direct. Shipments should arrive at doorsteps just in time for Valentine’s Day.

If the OnePlus 12R feels at all familiar, that’s because it closely resembles the OnePlus 11. It’s got a very familiar design, the exact same processor, and the very same main camera. However, the 12R’s display – while technically a slight step back in sharpness – offers a fabulously bright and colour-accurate picture. The new phone’s battery life, meanwhile, is straight out of the top drawer. There’s still no room for wireless charging or true waterproofing, which is a shame, and the camera system isn’t the most flexible on the market. If those things matter to you, there’s a OnePlus 12 out there with all of the necessary bells and whistles, albeit at a higher price. While it’s easy to feel underwhelmed with the OnePlus 12R and its mixture of reheated and made-to-order elements, there’s no denying it offers a compelling flagship-ish experience that undercuts many rivals – especially in the US.

The OnePlus 12R brings improvements in every area of the smartphone when compared to its previous iteration, OnePlus 11R. They both indeed look the same but internally they are on the opposite ends of each other. Even if you compare this to every other smartphone with the same price tag, the OnePlus 12R will still look and feel more premium. Its pros include design, display, chipset, and even battery. The display, in particular, is significantly brighter than its predecessor. Its cons include the camera and the lack of wireless charging. Don’t get us wrong, the main camera of the smartphone is quite capable but it’s not much of an improvement compared to its predecessor. We were hoping for a significant upgrade here but considering the price, it is more than acceptable. That’s because the price of the smartphone puts it in a place that is affordable for many people.

OK, so the camera system is disappointing aside from the main snapper, but it’s difficult to be disappointed with the OnePlus 12R as a whole. It represents terrific value and while it’s temping to say it’s a retread of last year’s OnePlus 11, that’s quite far from the truth considering the broad upgrades on offer here. It’s a bit like a OnePlus 12 Minus and when you’re talking about a saving of $200/£200 over the more expensive model, it’s rather compelling. After all, this offers more than most people will ever need.

If you’re on the lookout for an all-rounder priced at ₹40,000, the OnePlus 12R emerges as a compelling option. Boasting a plethora of premium features typically found in flagship devices, such as a sturdy aluminium frame, an LTPO 4.0 AMOLED display with Dolby Vision support, and lightning-fast 100W SUPERVOOC charging, it undoubtedly delivers on multiple fronts. The OnePlus 12R is a classic OnePlus device, which is both a positive and a negative. It harks back to the brand’s start as a powerful device maker who releases products at good price points and can’t quite nail a complete camera experience. As a more affordable option in the OnePlus 12 family it ticks a lot of boxes though, offering a 2023 flagship chipset, huge battery and very fast charging for a price that puts in directly between the Nothing Phone 2 and Pixel 8. I’d still say it’s more like a rebadged OnePlus 11 than the true flagship OnePlus is implying. The camera isn’t flagship-worthy and the design is dated in comparison to the rest of the market. Still, if it’s big performance and a long-lasting battery you’re after there’s nothing better on the market for this seriously tempting price.

The OnePlus 12R is an excellent smartphone with a decent camera. A couple of other similarly priced phones in the segment may offer a better camera, but as an overall package, you cannot go wrong with this phone. It has a great display, excellent performance, good speakers, fast wired charging, and a long-lasting battery; it doesn't heat up much when gaming and the primary camera performs well in daylight. So yes, the OnePlus 12R does bridge the gap between affordable and flagship. I'd totally recommend it to anyone who's looking for a taste of flagship performance and features but doesn't want to spend flagship-like money. At a starting price of Rs. 39,999, it's a blind buy.

Absolutely. At a price of Rs 39,999 or Rs 45,999 — all things considered — there is no better general purpose phone than the OnePlus 12R. Actually, it is better than many phones that cost thousands of rupees more. Even in areas where it may not be the king of the hill, it is above average for its class. We had started to believe that the good old days of phones that used to be an incredible value for money were over, that we needed to spend Rs 50,000 or Rs 60,000 to get top-class phones. But the OnePlus 12R brings the value for money mojo back. Under Rs 50,000, this is the best phone to buy for most people.

At $499 starting and $599 max price, the OnePlus 12R is an incredible bargain. You get nearly the same flagship experience as the OnePlus 12 with performance comparable to the OnePlus 11, iPhone 15, Pixel 8, and Galaxy S23 for a significantly lower price. The OnePlus 11, iPhone 15, and Pixel 8 are all $799 while the OnePlus 12 is $899. The Galaxy S23 is the closest in price at $699 but that is primarily because the S24 is officially available starting at $799. So you really can’t beat the 12R when it comes to affordability. It also has three fantastic rear cameras, a decent front-facing camera, crisp audio, and a buttery smooth 120Hz display. It ships with an 80W fast charger and has several display-optimizing features that the competition just doesn’t have. If it weren’t for the rounded edge design, the OnePlus 12R would be the perfect phone.

With exceptional display, smooth performance, and good on-battery time, the OnePlus 12r feels no less than a flagship when watching content, multitasking or indulging in casual gaming. However, on the camera front, the smartphone encounters a bit of a setback. Priced at Rs 39,999 onwards, the OnePlus 12r proves to be a good pick for individuals who primarily use smartphones for performance-oriented tasks. The device caters to users who prioritise a top-notch display for content consumption and a reliable battery that eliminates concerns about running out of power during daily activities.

This is my new go-to recommendation for most Android fans on a budget. I fully understand that, for a select group of people, the clean Android build and excellent camera performance offered by something like the Pixel 7a is simply unbeatable. But with the OnePlus 12R, the company is clearly chasing after powerhouses like the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, and frankly, they're coming surprisingly close for a fraction of the cost. No, the camera can't quite compete with smartphones twice the price, but I'm not sure they need to. For anyone who has spent the last several years missing the OnePlus of a decade ago, the company offering high-end performance for as low of a price as possible, I'm not sure what more you could ask for than the OnePlus 12R. And to take it just one step further, I'm not sure how companies like Samsung and Google are going to be able to compete in this price range without shaking things up. This is the new standard for $500 smartphones — everyone else is going to have to take note.

There are a few questions you need to ask yourself. What are you looking for in a phone, what can you do without, and what are you looking to spend? I think the OnePlus 12R strikes a very good balance of delivering top-notch performance in multiple areas while shedding the weight of features that don’t dilute the overall experience so that the price can come down. This is hard to do. Yet, OnePlus has nailed it. The OnePlus 12R features a great camera, excellent gaming performance, and a cooling system that helps keep the phone running smoothly all day. That’s not an easy achievement. I feel confident in saying that the OnePlus 12R is the absolute best phone you can buy in this price range. Unboxing the OnePlus 12R with a quick review of the camera tech, gaming and Oxygen OS 14 experience, comparing it vs the regular 12. The OnePlus 12R is a more budget-friendly alternative flagship smartphone. You're sacrificing some performance and camera smarts to hit that UK price, and there are plenty of other differences too. Still, the OnePlus 12R should satisfy all but the most demanding of users. While each of the camera sensors has been downgraded, you can shoot good looking pictures with this phone at any time. The ultra-wide and telephoto smarts of the 12 are a big step up, however. Likewise, this global version of the OnePlus 12R can smash through games like Genshin Impact, on higher graphics. That frame rate occasionally stumbles, but the 8 Gen 2 is still capable, if not as beefy as the 12 8 Gen 3. I will be testing the OnePlus 12R as my full-time phone soon for an in-depth review but so far the Oxygen OS 14 features look identical.

That said, stills performance is superb on the main camera and not half bad on the ultrawide, with both excelling in the dark - that's anything but a disappointing performance, if you don't particularly care for video. Add to that a wonderful display, class-leading battery life, and charging speed that's also among the best (in any class), and the 12R isn't looking too shabby, all things considered. Ultimately, whether the OnePlus 12R is merely good enough or just great for you will be decided on exactly how much you want to be zooming in or out on your cameras. Less frequent zooming - go ahead and pick up a 12R; more zooming - have a look at some other options first.

The Google Pixel 7a shares the OnePlus 12R’s $500 price tag. It’s more compact and has wireless charging, but it also has a worse screen, a much less capable processor, mediocre battery life, and much slower charge speeds.

Overall, the OnePlus 12R, with its sleek design, feels like a stylish phone. With its 6.78-inch curved display, the device delivers a pleasant viewing experience with great brightness and an efficient adaptive refresh rate. And despite featuring a slightly less powerful chip than the OnePlus 12, the OnePlus 12R still ensures smooth performance, quick app loading, and efficient handling of daily tasks. If OnePlus can iron out some of the launch-day bugs and hopefully extend support for the device, the OnePlus would be a great mid-range device that can take on even the S23FE. Right now, though, the OnePlus 12R is just a good mid-range device, not a great mid-ranger.

I finish this review on a positive note. Overall, the OnePlus 12R emerges as an excellent choice for those in pursuit of dependable performance, stellar display quality, and a camera that captures moments with lifelike clarity. This phone offers a two-day battery life, and above all, an unbeatable value for money at $500. Indeed, it lacks a telephoto camera and wireless charging capabilities, but it compensates with very good camera and battery performance. Earlier, I mentioned that the OnePlus 12R directly competes with the Google Pixel 7a, the Samsung Galaxy A54, and the newcomer, the Nothing Phone (2). I'm prepared to assert that in many categories, it surpasses these devices. Last year, I awarded the Google Pixel 7a a maximum rating of 5 stars here at nextpit. So, how does the OnePlus 12R position itself?

OnePlus started its journey off as the "flagship killer," and we definitely see that heritage in the OnePlus 12R. The phone manages to get the best out of its more expensive variant, the OnePlus 12, such as the amazing display with OnePlus' new tech to make navigation easier when the phone is wet. There is also the fact that you have a great main and ultra-wide cameras on board, which in most cases produce images that will leave you satisfied. That being said, there is no dedicated telephoto camera, and there is also the fact that you only get 3 years of software support in a time where most manufacturers are starting to offer at least 4. Nevertheless, we think the pros outweigh the cons in this particular case, and can recommend this OnePlus mid-ranger, as it offers more than enough for what it asks in return.

OnePlus got its start in this industry as the plucky little startup that was taking on the big fish. The OnePlus One was dubbed the "flagship killer" because it brought high-end specifications to a midrange price point, and to put it mildly, it was well-received by reviewers and fans alike. That fanbase grew — not to a point where Samsung or Apple would notice — but it was a mighty fanbase, convinced that OnePlus had found the formula for cheap phones that didn't suck. Skip ahead, and somewhere around the OnePlus 7 or 8, the company shifted its focus away from building "flagship killers" to just plain old building flagships. This was an important step in the company's history because it signaled the end of catering to the vocal, rabid fans of cheap phones, and more toward catering to people who just wanted a good phone experience, regardless of cost.

If there's one area where the 12R does fall short of its otherwise flagship standing, it's with camera versatility. The main 50MP Sony sensor delivers a similar experience to that of last year's flagship – running on the same sensor and with a fast shutter not to mention a year's worth of refinement from OnePlus. However the 8MP ultra-wide and 2MP macro cameras don't keep step with regards to quality and consistency. For the price, there's little that matches the 12R directly, however, alternatives like the OnePlus 11, Samsung Galaxy S23 FE and iPhone 14 come close; provided you're willing to trade away the phone's excellent display tech and battery prowess. One of the best OnePlus phones yet? Quite possibly, even without being a fully-fledged flagship in its own right.

The OnePlus 12R offers good performance, the largest battery among all OnePlus devices (5500 mAh), and an effective cooling system. The simplifications include the absence of eSIM, the use of the penultimate generation chipset, and a simpler camera. Overall, the impression is positive, so we look forward to a comprehensive test to get a detailed understanding of the new device.

I was thoroughly impressed by the OnePlus 12R in my brief time with it. The phone has all the features that make it almost a flagship, and at a starting price of Rs. 39,999, it seems to me like an excellent deal. However, I will have to spend more time with it to reach conclusions. To find out if you should get the OnePlus 12R over some of its competition, stay tuned for my full review.

There’s a sizeable gulf between the two phones, both in price and core specs. The OnePlus 12 is an affordable phone for power users boasting Qualcomm’s latest silicon, an exciting camera lineup, and a great display. It’s also packed to the brim with RAM and storage, although it shows this with its hefty mass and large footprint. This is the OnePlus phone to get if you care about bleeding-edge hardware. Meanwhile, the OnePlus 12R is the obvious choice for pragmatic buyers. For $300 less, you’ll get last year’s flagship chipset, a large battery, and a roomy display. It might not be as alluring as the OnePlus 12, but the 12R offers good value for those who don’t purely shop for numbers.

With the prospect of multi-day battery life, a bright display and a still top-performing system-on-chip, there's a lot to like about the OnePlus 12R. The phone's price is hard to beat, too, especially in the U.S. where a sub-$500 version will be available. How well those cameras perform will go a long way toward determining whether this phone is worth your consideration as a flagship alternative. We'll reserve any judgments until we can fully test the phone and evaluate how much it delivers. But the prospect of another OnePlus device bridging the gap between flagships and Nord handsets is enough reason to celebrate the OnePlus 12R's arrival.

OnePlus is bringing its ‘R’ series of phones to more regions for the first time with the OnePlus 12R, offering many flagship features at a lower price. There are some sacrifices though, and in many ways the OnePlus 12R is a bit of a rebadged OnePlus 11.

The OnePlus 12R boasts some premium features for a midrange phone, and it could be an attractive alternative to the OnePlus 12. But the price of this device and the performance of its cameras will ultimately determine whether it's a good value.

OnePlus is releasing two phones in Canada this year — the top-end OnePlus 12 and the more standard OnePlus 12R. As of January 15th, we’re only able to share pictures of the phones turned off and some specs. Review impressions will follow later in January for the OnePlus 12 and early February for the OnePlus 12R.

Overall, the OnePlus 12R is shaping up to be a disruptor in the Android space. With mostly high-end specs paired with an expected affordable price, it could be clashing with popular devices the likes of the Galaxy A and Pixel 7 or Pixel 7A series. And who knows, if the price is right, it might just become the new go-to offering when it comes to mid-range Android devices.

The OnePlus 12R launch is in four weeks, one of the first affordable flagship phones of 2024 - and here's how the camera, performance and specs compare vs the OnePlus 12. This is the first R model to launch globally, including a UK release - hopefully for a nice price. But the OnePlus 12R does make some sacrifices to trim the cost, including more basic camera sensors. Stay tuned for full coverage on Jan 23rd, with unboxing and review shenanigans to follow! The OnePlus 12R appears to sport a similar design to the flagship 12 phone, minus that pretty pattern. You'll get last year's Snapdragon chipset, but hopefully also a slightly bigger battery with the same 100W fast charging. Plus this mobile should be great for gaming, with a few years of updates to enjoy. While the telephoto and ultra-wide cameras are stripped from the 12, this R handset sports the same 50MP primary sensor.
