You might, however, not be too fussed about that when what you’re getting here is a top-end phone at less than top-end prices. At a price of £829, the OnePlus 9 Pro once again undercuts its main rivals, delivering flagship features without the four-figure price tag. Moreover, it doesn’t lag behind on features. From the display to the fast wired and wireless charging, the neat design, fast performance, IP68 rating and decent camera, it delivers everything you need – and would expect – from a flagship phone. And while there are other phones now doing a similar thing – offering the latest smartphone silicon in a more reasonably priced package, none can quite compete with the package that the OnePlus 9 Pro offers.

OnePlus has never come so close to getting it all right. It blended a series of specs and features into a cohesive whole that really resonates. OnePlus massaged details small and large in order to make the 9 Pro a phone that nearly toppled the industry leaders. Nearly. In its favor, the OnePlus 9 Pro enjoys an attractive design, an excellent display, smooth performance, and superb software. Toss in some of the fastest charging on the market and you have a winner. Most crucially, OnePlus made great strides with the camera, which was finally a competitive offering. It’s not the very best, but it significantly closed the gap between OnePlus and its competitors. Battery life is among several things that hold the phone back. Some might also be unhappy about the missing microSD card, but 256GB should be enough storage for most people. Then there’s 5G. While plenty of 5G bands are on board, its lack of support for AT&T 5G in the US is a significant blow for potential buyers not on Verizon and T-Mobile. Even with these flaws, there’s no doubt that OnePlus crafted a classic.

When OnePlus granted the 9 Pro an extra year of OS and security updates with a new three/four year commitment, I was ready to increase our review score and give the phone our Most Wanted Award — I promised as much in our original review. But the company has also been caught reducing app performance for some 300 titles in a way that makes a substantial (but varied) impact, and the Android 12 Oxygen OS 12 update was particularly low-quality, bringing down the overall experience. Customers spending up to $1,000 on a phone shouldn't have to put up with any of these issues. So what was supposed to be a celebration at a review score increase is now a score drop. If you focus on a handful of features, the OnePlus 9 Pro is a great phone, with a super-smooth screen, the fastest wired and wireless charging, and a solid long-term update commitment, in a root-and-ROM-friendly package. I even enjoy the camera — though it's not as good as the competition. But take a step back, looking at the forest and not the trees, and the 9 Pro's flaws (chief among them: Software) are inescapable.

As an expensive flagship smartphone, the OnePlus 9 Pro has a lot to offer. It is built really well and has an excellent display, a relatively clean and minimal UI, great performance, good cameras, decent battery life, and fast charging. The main issue with the phone comes down to the software. It almost feels as if for the past year or so, OnePlus just gave up trying to fix OxygenOS and make it work reliably, knowing it would get merged into ColorOS anyway. We really hope the merger brings the promised stability to this platform because using it in its current form has been a bit of a nightmare over the past few months. Still, the OnePlus 9 Pro is not far from becoming the proper flagship smartphone that we were promised back in March 2021, and with the OxygenOS 12 update looming on the horizon, there's a good chance it might just end up becoming that.

This all means that investment now into a OnePlus 9 Pro is an investment into the unknown. Sure, you could just not update to the unified OS when that time comes. But why would you spend $1,000 on a phone to stop getting updates a year after it launches? The smartest thing to do right now is to wait it out for more details on the software roadmap. If you desperately want a OnePlus 9 Pro, go ahead and get one — you won’t be disappointed, it’s an amazing piece of hardware. Just do it with the understanding that there’s no guarantee what’s around the corner when it comes to its software. The OnePlus 9 Pro reaches the market with a refreshed design, a 6.7-inch AMOLED display, a Snapdragon 888 processor, and a new Hasselblad camera partnership for improved imaging.

The OnePlus 9 Pro (starting at $969.99) delivers a streamlined flagship experience to T-Mobile and Verizon subscribers, finally catching up to its competitors. The phone itself is light in the hand, and the user experience is weightless as well. The cameras take knockout photos in pretty much all conditions and the integrated fast charging is the best we've seen. The Galaxy S21 Ultra scores a bit better in our battery and wireless radio testing, works with Samsung's excellent S Pen stylus, and its camera offers killer optical zoom, so it just edges out the 9 Pro to be our Editors' Choice among flagship smartphones. Still, the OnePlus 9 Pro is outstanding. If you want a top-notch, loaded phone that makes your heart sing, you're now spoiled for choice.

OnePlus 9 Pro is a smartphone with a great display and a strong set of cameras branded by Hasselblad. It is a flagship that is one of the best in its class and generally delivers what it promises - and it's not just about numbers, it's more about a great experience of dealing with one of the best Android smartphones on the market. The reviewed smartphone, thanks to the strong, top specification, is an investment for years - and it must be added that the investment is not the cheapest. OnePlus 9 Pro will have to compete for our money with top smartphones, such as the iPhone 12 Pro or Samsung Galaxy S21+. Add to that the fact that Samsung has lowered the prices on the new flagship series, while OnePlus has raised them, and extended the update period to 3 years for system updates and 4 years for security patches. This can make a difference if you plan to buy a smartphone for the next few years.

The OnePlus 9 Pro is a legitimate flagship phone that is genuinely competitive with the best Android phones on the market — at least from a features and quality perspective. Yet in terms of market and mind share, it’s still destined to be a niche device for a small group of enthusiasts looking for a specific kind of elegance in their Android device.

Like any phone today, there are downsides. Battery life out of the box isn't what you'd expect for a phone in this segment, and while OnePlus said it has fixed the issue, I still don't get a day's worth of battery out of the 4500mAh unit. Overall, though, OnePlus nailed the fundamentals. It's lighter and more compact than the OnePlus 8 Pro while delivering improved performance, superior cameras, and a better design. And that screen is very good. It's not quite perfect, but it's as close to OnePlus has come so far, and that's a pretty significant milestone.

As nice as it is to have novel specs and feats, such as a high refresh rate, video motion interpolation, or “perfect” color accuracy, at the end of the day, what I notice and care about are the things that make my experience with the phone sub-par. After all, our phones are one of the most useful tools that we own, and we should come to expect an easy and comfortable experience. For many smartphone makers, there’s been a halt—a regression, sometimes—in the low-brightness territory. While this likely won’t be a deal-breaker for most people, some may feel that low-light legibility and comfortability can be just as if not more important than outdoor visibility. And, sometimes, it seems that companies have been focusing so much on making their panels brighter while forgetting that there are still darker depths to take on.

The OnePlus 9 Pro continues in the vein of other recent OnePlus devices that have scored well in our Display database rankings, with a good overall performance. Despite a weaker-than-expected readability score, the device showed accurate color rendering, comfortable readability in low-light conditions, and a smooth feel when playing video games, web browsing, or using the gallery app.

The ultra-wide camera looks similar on paper, too, with a 14 mm-equivalent focal length and f/2.2 aperture. OnePlus has switched to the larger Sony IMX 766, 50 MP, 1/1.56″ sensor for the ultra-wide on the 9 Pro, though, which should allow for a higher photon flow and give it an edge over some competitors. The tele camera utilizes an 8 MP sensor, with a 77 mm-equivalent, f/2.4-aperture lens with OIS that’s very similar to the 8 Pro’s. That 77 mm equates to around a 3x optical zoom, which is decent but falls short of the longer ranges available on competitors like the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra and the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra.

The cult following that OnePlus has might not like the price of the 9 Pro; it's £829, and Xiaomi phones are undercutting that somewhat. However, this is an Android handset that presents a genuinely worthy alternative to Samsung's S21 - if you're willing to accept slightly less camera quality - and there's still a big difference in price between the two (over £150). This is, without doubt, the best smartphone OnePlus has ever produced and, taking into account value for money, it could well be the best Android phone currently available. With Huawei's mobile business going south, the OnePlus 9 Pro could finally be that long-awaited mainstream hit.

At $969, the OnePlus 9 Pro isn’t what one would call cheap, seeing as it’s possible to grab a Galaxy S21 Ultra for a similar price during one of Samsung’s many promotions. It does, however, boast vastly superior charging speeds, wired and wirelessly, and it’s certainly a much more svelte design than the chunky S21 Ultra. The brand may no longer be pushing the old “Flagship Killer” slogan in its advertising, thanks to the ever-increasing pricing strategy. Still, OnePlus has arguably created a “Killer Flagship” in the form of the OnePlus 9 Pro.

OnePlus's recent pattern of behavior also has me a little sketched out. Despite insisting that the OnePlus 9 Pro would cost $969, here we are over a month since sales started, and all you can buy is the more expensive $1069 model — still. I know there are supply chain shortages, but OnePlus releases new models twice a year typically. While the 9 Pro might stick around longer, we could be coming up on 20% of its retail-facing life with only the most expensive model available, and that feels a little deceitful in the absence of more information. In the end, I wish I could recommend the 9 Pro. I really do. OnePlus phones have historically been among my favorites — the OnePlus 7 Pro blew my mind, and though I didn't love the OnePlus 8 Pro quite as much, it was still a fantastic buy — but I just don't feel the same about the company's products in 2021.

There's a lot to like about the OnePlus 9 Pro, including its excellent display, performance, and fast charging speeds. However, for a device with a $1,000 price tag and one that claims to take on the iPhone 12 Pro and Galaxy S21 Ultra, the OnePlus 9 Pro falls a bit flat in some key departments.

There’s really not a lot else, even being very critical of the hardware and software to pick at. OnePlus have done a superb job of building a device that will not just suit, but excite the masses and not just enthusiasts. The look is a little more generic than previous years and the curved edge of the display is aesthetically nice but leads to a few minor issues. At the end of it all, it fits in among so many other devices that sell big numbers from the likes of Samsung, Google, Apple and even their stablemate OPPO.

All in all, the OnePlus 9 Pro is a very capable device, delivering big improvements on the camera front, along with the performance we’ve come to expect from OnePlus over the years. So, should you buy the OnePlus 9 Pro? If you are looking for a flagship Android phone with a fast and lag-free experience, and willing to spend over Rs 60,000, then nothing should stop you from buying the OnePlus 9 Pro. The handset comes with some of the latest and flagship features. Be it the latest Snapdragon 888 processor, the near-stock Android experience with Oxygen OS, the 6.7-inch QHD display or the natural colour reproduction on the Hasselblad camera, OnePlus 9 Pro checks all the boxes. The camera performance is good but it faces strong challenges from the iPhone 12 Pro Max and the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. It’s a tough ask for any brand -- even Apple and Samsung -- to convince people to shell out close to Rs 70,000. OnePlus 9 Pro makes a convincing case but how compelling remains to be seen.

The OnePlus 9 Pro is an excellent phone. At $970, it holds its own against the slightly more expensive Galaxy S21 Ultra and iPhone 12 Pro. It doesn't quite match the Galaxy S21 Ultra on camera zoom or network performance, but it's lighter and sleeker, it has some unique camera tricks, and there's that renowned OnePlus speed and elegant software. That amazing fast charging and the battery-saving display also make a big difference in day-to-day use. The 9 Pro is better than the OnePlus 8 series in every way, so the upgrade is easily warranted. It only fails to nab our Editors' Choice award because the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is even more outstanding and can be used on any carrier. The OnePlus 9 Pro is a distinct smartphone that deserves every bit of its premium tag. Though reasonably priced, the phone cuts no corners and offers a wholesome experience that justifies its ‘Pro’ moniker. The phone is a complete package, competent enough to take on other flagships from established brands like Samsung and Apple. In the ever-narrowing field of high-end flagships, it is largely a duopoly between Samsung and Apple. The OnePlus 9 Pro isn’t going to change that, but it absolutely belongs in that discussion. OnePlus blended a smattering of specs and features into a cohesive whole that makes the 9 Pro a phone that nearly topples the industry leaders. Nearly. It boasts a great design and display, excellent performance, and improved imaging, but misstepped a bit with battery life and 5G support. Thanks to the price, it's no longer a flagship killer — nor is it the ultimate killer flagship — but it is OnePlus' best smartphone in years and one wholly worth considering even at just shy of $1,000.

There really are only two options left in the high-end Android game, so if you want a $1,000 phone that’s actually worth buying, you turn to Samsung or OnePlus. For Samsung, the Galaxy S21 Ultra is looking like the ultimate phone of 2021, but that doesn’t mean you should ignore the OnePlus 9 Pro.

Meanwhile, the OnePlus 9 will start at $729 which is $240 cheaper than the Pro. The upgraded spec with 12GB of Ram and 256GB of storage will come in at $829.

The OnePlus 9 Pro smartphone (starting at $969.99) delivers a streamlined flagship experience to T-Mobile and Verizon subscribers, finally catching up to its competitors. The phone itself is light in the hand, and the user experience is weightless as well. The cameras take knockout photos in pretty much all conditions and the integrated fast charging is the best we've seen. The Galaxy S21 Ultra scores a bit better in our battery and wireless radio testing, it works with Samsung's excellent S Pen stylus, and its camera offers killer optical zoom, so it just edges out the 9 Pro to be our Editors' Choice among flagship smartphones. Still, the OnePlus 9 Pro is outstanding. If you want a top-notch, loaded phone that makes your heart sing, you're now spoiled for choice.

Finally, let us return to the starting point. OnePlus is still the flagship killer we are familiar with, and all aspects of the hardware configuration are very attractive. What’s more gratifying is that not only the hardware stockpiling, OnePlus is also more mature, and it has begun to use multiple hardware and software. The addition of ColorOS this time is the best proof. With the easy-to-use ColorOS, it combines with the hydrogen OS, which is the most suitable for high-brush environments, plus the Hasselblad blessing, for the meticulous polishing of the colour and the imaging system. This time, the OnePlus 9 Pro will truly “out of the circle”, not only known for its screen machine king but also to become a new video machine king recognized by people.

I strongly recommend this phone for those on earlier version of OnePlus smartphones from before 2020. These users will notice a big jump in experience and features, especially with the camera and screen. This is also a good option for those looking at a top-end Android phone, but don’t really want to spend that much. Also, those using a phone for serious photography and video work can look at this as a good option that offers natural results. Then gamers have a new phone that also does other stuff very well too.

The OnePlus 9 Pro offers phenomenal performance, a vastly superior camera to the brand’s previous smartphones, and a variety of top-end features that make this a serious contender for anyone who’s in the market for a premium Android handset. It won’t be for everyone though as the price is high for this smartphone.

The OnePlus 9 Pro is the company's continued effort to establish that it can produce smartphones that not only pack the most ridiculous specs, but also squeeze the most out of it. This year's highlights include the Snapdragon 888 SoC paired with 12GB of LPDDR5 memory, Hasselblad branded cameras and a 1440p display with a refresh rate of 120Hz. while the Snapdragon 888 is overpowered for most use cases, chances are, you're going to be able to use this smartphone for several years to come.

At a starting price of Rs 64,999 for the 8GB RAM and 128GB storage model, the OnePlus 9 Pro is the cheapest flagship Android smartphone you can buy until now. It offers one of the best display panels you can find in the market, excellent performance, stunning cameras, and a battery backup that should be enough for your everyday use. OnePlus already had a pretty solid foundation to build the OnePlus 9 Pro upon. The OnePlus 8 Pro still is one of the best phones the company has made to date, and the 9 Pro is an evolutionary update of it. The newer 5G SoC, faster wired charging, and improved cameras are all capabilities we were expecting it to have, and it definitely delivers. But with a $969 starting price, the company is now truly into the upper echelon of the smartphone market. We are talking about a market of discerning buyers where there is no room for missteps, misgivings, and certainly no room for slacking or slowing down. The new flagship puts quite a heavy emphasis on its camera and display, and while the former is addressing some of the harshest criticisms for OnePlus’ previous flagships, the latter is just bragging at this point. Indeed, the OnePlus 9 Pro returns to the basics and delivers a revamped camera experience that’s pretty much on par with the latest Galaxies and iPhones. The display is also one of the finest on a contemporary phone, introducing a couple of firsts that will most certainly become industry standards in the near future. What’s more, with OnePlus being among the pioneers of fast charging, it comes to no surprise that the phone is equipped with exceptionally quick wired and wireless charging solutions. The OnePlus 9 Pro is a compelling way of getting some top features and a decent video performance from a phone without having to pay the typical flagship premium. All that stands in the way of true greatness is the need for a little more finesse with video and the distinctly average music performance. OnePlus doesn’t have the same audio heritage as other brands and it really shows here. This phone has the apps, the connectivity and the storage to deliver hi-res music, but not the best audio circuitry – and that's a bit of a shame.

The OnePlus 9 Pro comes with a 6.7-inch QHD+ (1,440×3,216 pixels) Fluid Display 2.0 AMOLED display. The display is paired with low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) technology that enables the Smart 120Hz feature. This helps reduce power consumption by up to 50 percent by automatically matching the refresh rate to the current user scenario — from 1Hz for viewing photos and reading text to 24Hz for watching movies and as high as 120Hz for smooth scrolling.

Conventional wisdom — and quite a bit of market data — tells us that when people start shopping for high-end smartphones, they’ll usually wind up with an iPhone or a Samsung Galaxy. With the new OnePlus 9 Pro, though, OnePlus makes a convincing argument for skipping the duopoly and trying something different. That’s because the company managed to build its best smartphone yet, one truly deserving of the flagship label. Its focus on speed, screen quality, and a renewed commitment to photography just might help the brand win over a new legion of fans. It’s just too bad OnePlus’s best phones these days aren’t the deals they used to be.

This is the OnePlus 9 Pro, and by all counts,.. I think this is the phone the company has wanted to make for years. OnePlus. For years following its 2014 debut the name alone conjured excitement among phone fans – first for value, then for features, and more recently a kind of middle ground between the two. Unfortunately for OnePlus, the words “excitement” and “middle ground” seldom go together … so this year, the company put another name on the only part of its new phone that "sticks out."

This is, without question, the best device OnePlus has ever made. If you’ve been thinking about splurging on a new smartphone, the 9 Pro deserves your consideration — it’s a true flagship, with the price to match. The only thing keeping me from recommending more strongly is its competition. You can pretty easily find a Galaxy S21 Ultra for around the same price, and it comes with a much more flexible camera system, an extended software support window and a more ambitious set of features. (I'd probably stick with one of those myself.) Even so, the OnePlus 9 Pro is, at the very least, extremely competent at everything it sets out to do, and well worth you're time if you value the sensation of speed over anything else.

Obviously, buyers in the market for a phone with a serviceable camera and a Snapdragon 888 processor need not look any further than the OnePlus 9, or the ASUS ROG Phone 5. However, bear in mind that you will be missing out on an IP rating, as well as wireless charging, among other things. All things considered, OnePlus is sailing into uncharted waters with the launch of the OnePlus 9 Pro. While I cannot comment on the phone’s success in the Indian market as of yet, I can recommend it to prospective buyers who have a budget of Rs 65-70K. For the price, the OnePlus 9 Pro is a good option and is only held back by its sub-par battery life. Other than that, the smartphone excels in every department and correspondingly, gets a green light from me.

Should you buy the OnePlus 9 Pro? It’s a tough but fair question to ask. As a phone reviewer, I don’t stick to a single phone for more than a couple of months, and even if I do, I always have at least two phones I switch between. If I were to buy a phone right now, I would want a phone that features hardware that can justify the price. At its base retail price, I do think the OnePlus 9 Pro earns its keep. Its camera, while still lacking in some areas, has improved where it matters. Its display is, in my opinion, the best you can find on an Android device. It’s more comfortable to hold and pocket than the other flagships I’ve recently used. Its performance is also top-tier, continuing OnePlus’ excellence in this field. Its charging speeds are the fastest you’ll find on any smartphone in North America. Plus, it’s also one of the few phones available in North America that’s easy to root and mod.

OnePlus phones have come a long way from being the bargain-priced “flagship killer” of yesteryear. Yes, they cost a pretty penny nowadays, but in a market where your regular flagship costs $1,000, if the OnePlus 9 Pro really has a price-tag of $799, it’ll absolutely kill it in that value segment. We can’t wait to get our hands on one and put it through its paces, the OnePlus 9 Pro might very well be the phone to buy in early 2021.
