Reviews for the OnePlus Nord
OnePlus charges less than 400 Euros (~$470) for the OnePlus Nord: A smartphone with a 90-Hz display, 5G, a fast SoC, a lot of internal storage and a premium exterior. Has OnePlus finally managed to return to offering the undisputed best value phone?

Don't let our five-star rating trick you into thinking that this is a flawless phone – you can find handsets with better cameras and faster processors and waterproofing – but for the money you spend this is a really impressive combination of hardware and software. The mid-range continues to be the most compelling part of the smartphone market, and that has to be good news for anyone wanting to buy a phone that won't break the bank.

OnePlus has made an emphatic return to the mid-range market with the OnePlus Nord – it's an affordable smartphone that's packed with features. There's a great screen, plenty of power, and a set of capable cameras, all wrapped up in a package that belies its affordable price. The OnePlus Nord represents an emphatic return to the combination of style, features and affordability that made the brand stand out when it arrived on the smartphone scene in 2014 with the OnePlus One. It offers an almost-flagship experience, at a comfortably lower price tag than the OnePlus 8 series, blending premium design, slick performance and great cameras for a heady mix of smartphone satisfaction.

For all its positives, the OnePlus Nord isn’t necessarily a compelling purchase. One year on, the OnePlus Nord is still sold at nearly full price both in India and Europe. Meanwhile, alternatives like the Redmi Note 10 Pro/Pro Max or the Google Pixel 4a offer a lot more bang for the buck with their well-rounded packages or imaging prowess. Moreover, with the OnePlus Nord 2 on the horizon — and the promise of improved imaging and a much faster Dimensity 1200 processor — it makes little sense to pick up the original Nord at full price. It’s still a solid option in the mid-range segment if you can land a good deal on it, but there are better alternatives out there.

With 5G, a solid lineup of specs and a beautiful, vibrant design, the OnePlus Nord, released in 2020 in the UK, offers a hell of a lot for a reasonable price. You can currently find it for £329 or about $428 on Amazon, which is significantly cheaper than its $1,069 flagship sibling, the OnePlus 9 Pro. This phone packs a potent octacore processor, a vibrant 6.44-inch display, an in-display fingerprint scanner and 5G connectivity for ultrafast data speeds. All of that's wrapped up in a great-looking blue body that feels anything but cheap. Add to that three rear cameras that take decent shots and two selfie cameras, and the Nord is as well-stacked as any of today's elite handsets.

The OnePlus Nord aims to provide some high-quality features in a more affordable smartphone. The overall score and performance in our analysis shows that it has for the most part met that target. By borrowing the high-quality main camera from the OnePlus 8 Pro, it sets expectations high. It performs well in general — exposure and autofocus are accurate in most conditions, and details are well preserved. But it’s in the specialty areas that the device’s flaws become more evident. In low-light conditions, the OnePlus Nord’s performance dropped in both camera and video; its lack of a true telephoto (or even 50 mm equivalent) had an effect on its performance, and its ultra-wide angle camera also left something to be desired. In video, the OnePlus Nord lost a lot of points for inefficient autofocus and tracking, though it performed well under general conditions.

And that’s really the rub. OnePlus doesn’t want to eat into the sales of the 8, 8 Pro, or 8T so the Nord is missing a few features we’d really appreciate here. In a vacuum, we can say we want these features, but we’ll probably never see them because OnePlus sells devices in the real world, not a vacuum.

There's also the issue of availability. OnePlus chose to launch this phone only in India and Europe, with many regions including the Americas getting left out. OnePlus has plans to launch a separate device in these regions, but we are not yet sure when it will be released and what the differences would be with the version tested here.

However, if you can get a Poco F2 Pro for around RM1,800 or a Mi 10 for less than RM2,000, then I’d go for those instead because then I think they’d be better value than the OnePlus Nord. Personally, I think I’d still go for the OnePlus because I just prefer the software so much more than MIUI, but that’s more of a personal preference thing.

Given the sky-rocketing prices of some smartphones, users are becoming increasingly conscious of the amount they are willing to spend on their devices. The OnePlus Nord strikes a balance in terms of looks, capabilities, technology, and pricing. Available in 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage, or 12GB RAM and 256GB internal storage, the devices will cost INR 27,999, 399 euros, or 379 GBP – for the former and INR 29,999, 499 euros, or 469 GBP.

The OnePlus Nord sells in India for Rs 24,999 for the 6 GB RAM/64 GB storage variant (coming soon), Rs 27,999 for its 8 GB RAM variant with 128 GB storage, which for me is the most practical of the trio. You also have a 12 GB RAM variant with 256 GB internal storage for Rs 29,999 ― the one that we reviewed here. While 12 GB is overkill on a phone with the Snapdragon 765 SoC, a premium of just 2K for the additional 128 GB storage along with 4 GB extra RAM is not a bad deal at all.

The OnePlus Nord is a solid 5G-enabled mid-range offer. One combining a well-balanced specs sheet, with the excellent, class-leading experience of Oxygen OS. Thanks to thoughtful engineering and a large infusion of familiar OnePlus DNA, the Nord manages to transcend the simple label of just another BBK Electronics rebranded device. BBK owns and ensures healthy technology sharing among its subsidiaries Oppo, vivo, Realme and OnePlus but after all is said and done, each company runs its own phone business in a different way.

Priced at Rs 29,999 (top-end variant), the OnePlus Nord makes a solid case for itself in the midrange segment. The OnePlus Nord is a very, very good smartphone for the price that it commands -- starting at Rs 24,999 in India or €399 in the EU. OnePlus Nord is a good choice in the Rs 25,000 and Rs 30,000 segment. If you are an average user then it may be a good idea to go for the low-end variant with 6GB of RAM to get the best bang for the buck. If you ever wanted to buy the OnePlus 8 but the price deterred you, then the Nord is the right opportunity to get a OnePlus flagship experience for a lesser price. The Nord is a fine overall package but do not expect it to be a replacement for a true flagship device which runs the latest Snapdragon 800 series processor. Having said that good battery life and the promise of timely software upgrade makes the Nord a compelling choice under Rs 30,000.

It feels like OnePlus is going back to its roots with the Nord. This is not a ‘flagship killer' like the original OnePlus One (Review), but it doesn't need to be since OnePlus itself has its own line of premium flagships. The Nord could have simply been called the OnePlus Lite or OnePlus 8 Lite, but that probably wouldn't have had the same impact as creating buzz around a new product line. The OnePlus Nord feels like just the beginning, and if we're lucky, we could see more in this series, possibly targeting even lower tiers of the smartphone market. If you currently own an older OnePlus smartphone such as the OnePlus 6 (Review), then the Nord should be a good upgrade.

OnePlus’ return to mid-range smartphones presents some strong competition to both older flagships and the current crop of budget devices. It has a big 6.4-inch screen that can run at 90Hz for a smoother software experience. OnePlus has also packed in enough camera tech to ensure the Nord takes decent photos, with all the flexibility of a four-sensor setup. The OnePlus Nord is an excellent phone on its own, but when you consider the sub-$500 price, it becomes a fantastic option -- assuming it's available in your area or you don't mind importing it. Sure, you can get a Poco F2 Pro with a Snapdragon 865 for about $550, but it lacks a 90Hz display, OIS on the main camera, and that snappy OxygenOS experience. It’s OnePlus’ balanced approach that makes the Nord such an exceptional handset. Ultimately, it’s just greater than the sum of its parts.

With the OnePlus Nord, OnePlus returns to a price segment it once dominated. But this time with a totally different approach. The Nord is not a spec monster. Or a design wonder. And yet it is special. Read on to find out why.

The Nord is a really solid midrange phone, but it’s not perfect. It’s well-specced, with a wide array of cameras and a big high refresh rate display. But in reality, it doesn’t get the most out of all this hardware. Its processor can’t get the most out of its screen all of the time, and camera performance only ends up being okay rather than excellent. None of these are dealbreakers at this price, though, and I wouldn’t say the Nord outright underperforms in any one area.

You don't hear much about the risks that come with success. One of them is that the more successful you get, the harder it becomes to impress people. To hear OnePlus tell it, that’s part of the reason it named its newest smartphone (the OnePlus Nord) after the concept of “true north” – because over the past seven years, the company has gradually strayed from its original mission of selling great smartphones at an accessible price … and now it wants to “return to its roots.”

As I mentioned before, the OnePlus Nord is only available in Europe and India starting on August 4 through the OnePlus site. But the company has opened up a limited beta program for North America, with 50 slots available for people to sign up for a chance to receive the phone.

Lack of time and embargoes prevent us from going too in-depth on this occasion but our first impressions of the OnePlus Nord are positive. It looks like a OnePlus phone, it swims like a OnePlus phone, and it quacks like a OnePlus phone.

OnePlus has taken its first step back into the mid-range market confidently, and we hope that its promise of not compromising on its key brand values holds up as we test the Nord more thoroughly. The Nord looks like it will take care of anything you can throw at it, all while costing a surprisingly low amount of money.

It may not be the most exciting phone - on paper - but OnePlus obviously needed to make some compromises to get this phone down to its price point, and we think there’s a serious amount of good in this phone for the outlay.

On paper the OnePlus Nord has a strong feature set, and our initial impressions are generally positive, but the real test will come when we perform our deep dives into performance, the cameras, and battery life to find out whether this is a mid-range marvel or a misstep.

At this stage, it’s so far so good. We’ve only had a limited period to really sink our teeth into the OnePlus Nord, but our first impressions suggest that everything feels in place at this early stage. We’ll have to really put the Nord through its paces in the coming weeks to give a proper “verdict.”

Just witnessed the much-hyped AR launch by Lewis Hilsenteger of Unbox therapy and Carl Lau – CEO of OnePlus and well the product is good but the hype around the launch was a little stretched. The AR presentation though went off smooth, but it was not rocket science or Elon Musk personally ejecting himself to the moon in his capsule. In a nutshell, it was a great work of video editors who have been working on developing games. Now let’s get to the real deal which is the price and it’s quite reasonably priced for the specs it comes packed with.
