The Oppo A78 has a big screen, a premium feel, and many other traits that let you forget it's a cheap Android device... as long as you can handle its poor camera performance and a tidal wave of bloatware.

The Oppo A78 5G is another budget phone that boasts great battery life and decent performance even if the 720p display is a little soft. Much like the TCL 40R 5G, it shows that you don’t have to break the bank for a solid phone, even one with 5G connectivity.

The Oppo A78 seems to be in an existential crisis, where there's no reason for it to exist amongst such strong competition which offers way better specifications for an even better price. This makes the Oppo's handset an all show and no go.

The OPPO A78 is a 4G smartphone with a decent set of features and specs in addition to its design. We liked its slim and lightweight design, super fast 67W fast charging, and impressive 90 Hz AMOLED display with loud stereo speakers. For those who are looking for a decent 4G smartphone with good specs, the OPPO A78 is a good choice. The performance of the OPPO A78 is suitable for the segment (Snapdragon 680), however, performance users might want to pick a higher-power CPU, a faster Dimensity 800 SoC, or Snapdragon 695 SoC is a good option in a similar price category (i.e. under ₹20,000).

For £219, this budget phone touts a two-day battery life, 5G connectivity, decent performance for scrolling and gaming, and a fine camera for casual shutterbugs. Android devices at this price point always come with some unique drawbacks – like bloatware or confusing interfaces – but in general, the A78 plays its cards well and will likely suit any price-conscious customer.

The Oppo A78 5G battery provided excellent autonomy when tested in factory default mode. The device’s charge lasted almost three days when used moderately, and on-the-go performance was excellent. When testing usage separately, autonomy was closer to the average. The device showed good results when streaming videos in 4G and during idle time. However, autonomy when calling or listening to music was only average, compared with the excellent results when tested in factory default mode. Charging the battery to full capacity took 1 hour and 34 minutes, which was slightly longer than average. A quick 5-minute charge provided 4.5 hours of autonomy, only 10 minutes more than our database average. Moreover, when the device indicated 100% of battery level, the real battery capacity was closer to 93%, which could impact the user experience. The charger efficiency tipped to just below our database average, but the adapter efficiency was a bit above average. The residual consumption of the charger was average, too. Discharge currents were low during our typical usage scenario and when streaming videos in 4G, meaning that the device is well-optimized for these use cases. However, the discharge currents when gaming or watching videos in Wi-Fi or airplane mode were higher than average. Compared with devices from the same range price ($200 – $399), the Oppo A78 5G ranked above average in our database. It showed excellent autonomy in factory default mode, but the charging and efficiency scores were just below average.

The Oppo A78 is a mid-ranger phone with downgrade specs that will provide an average user experience and normal hardware power. Overall, it’s a jack of all trades but doesn’t offer anything outstanding in the first place. However, you are getting enough storage, a decent display, and long-lasting battery life as the plus points. But even after that, the phone won’t be the best deal since there are tons of other options in the same price bracket. If you are willing to spend a little more and are looking for a better smartphone, then we suggest you check the Xiaomi Civi 2 smartphone which comes with better specs. However, if you are looking for a device in a similar pricing range, then you consider checking the Realme 10 Pro as an overall package with good hardware and software combination.

As for photos under artificial lighting things do not improve as it gets noisy. Moreover, there’s visible blurriness which makes the photos look disappointing. Lastly, night shots are decent when night mode is turned on as detailing level increases. Without night mode, you cannot expect a lot from the device. The Oppo A78 5G faces stiff competition from other smartphones in the same price segment. As a staunch Oppo fan, you can consider A78 as your next buy but the other smartphones priced at around Rs 18,000 mark are a force to reckon with and are there to impress you with their offerings.

The Oppo A78 is a mid-ranger 5G device that launched in January 2023, and the phone cost around $233 (Rs 18,999 in India) approx. The Oppo A78 smartphone offers 5G connectivity and featured a 6.56 inches IPS LCD display that renders a decent 90Hz refresh rate, 480-600 nits brightness nits, and a 269-pixel density screen. The display has also panda glass protection and IP54 dust and water resistance. All of that combines with the Android 12-based ColorOS 13 user interface. The hardware section introduces the 7nm – MediaTek MT6833 Dimensity 700 chipset and Mali-G57 MC2 GPU support. In terms of the camera section, you will get a dual-camera setup that includes a 50MP primary shooter and a 2MP depth lens along with an 8MP selfie lens. From this camera setup, you can record up to 1080p resolution videos. On the other hand, the phone also renders a massive Li-Po 5000 mAh battery that powers through a 33W fast charger, and you can purchase the phone in two exciting color variants of Glowing Black and Glowing Purple. The Oppo A78 smartphone is available with 8GB RAM with 128GB internal storage.

So overall, the OPPO A78 5G is priced at RM1,099. I can only describe it with one word – expensive. I mean, in the sea of smartphones that are available in the market now, I can’t find anything that makes this phone stand out from the others that can justify this price tag. As mentioned in one of our videos from nearly 2 years ago at this point – never choose a 5G phone while sacrificing performance, screen, among other things. That being said, 5G is still not available in many regions – particularly indoors, so we can’t take full advantage of it yet.

The Oppo A78 5G is a decent smartphone, but the company has made some compromises to keep the device relatively affordable. The biggest compromise is the LCD display, which I feel should change in 2023. An AMOLED display, even with a 90Hz refresh rate, would have been a better choice and given it an edge over rivals. Its cameras are somewhat better than the Redmi Note 12's triple cameras, and the Dimensity 700 SoC offers reliable performance, thanks to 8GB RAM. However, the latter packs a much better display, where all the action happens. Otherwise, both devices come with a 5,000mAh battery and the 33W charging is a plus. My suggestion would be that if the price of the Oppo A78 5G drops to Rs 15,999, it's worth considering. Even at Rs 16,999, it is a decent choice, but the competition at this price gets stiffer. Otherwise, it may be worth waiting for new launches from Samsung and other OEMs, which isn't far away. I am sure Oppo has surprises for us.
