Exceptional battery life, a large screen and small price are all appealing factors about the Realme 5. Even if you don't know the brand name, if you're after a budget handset and can accept the low-resolution, camera oversell, and Micro-USB charging, then you'll get something of a bargain as a result.

Just make sure you compare it against all the other cheap phones and Android phones available right now, because you might find it worth your while to spend a little bit more for an upgraded phone – nearly new flagship phones and mid-range handsets can often be grabbed at attractive price points too, especially if they're about to be replaced.

I’ve been wanting to take a look at the Realme 5 Pro since getting a hands-on with it last October. That phone is available to buy for €199, which works out at £168.45. The “Pro” has a 6.3″ screen with a 2340×1080 (409ppi) screen and measures in at 157mm x 74.2mm x 8.9mm. On the back, there’s a main 48 megapixel Sony camera and three other lenses – an 8 megapixel wide-angle, a 2 megapixel macro and a 2 megapixel portrait.

If you only have a small budget for a phone you will not feel short-changed if you buy the Realme5 which currently costs £142 and that gives you all you need for a phone. Some people might find the ColorOS a bit problematic at first but you will get used to it.

The Realme 5 is a compelling budget handset that delivers an excellent user experience in more ways than one. Its stellar battery life, futuristic design and above-par cameras are among the highlights. However, we’re disappointed with the low resolution screen and micro-USB charging, and just can’t ignore the wealth of intrusive bloatware. These would not usually be deal breakers at this price point, but the wealth of capable sub-£200 handsets makes this phone hard to recommend.

Even at the best of times, it feels like the RealMe 5 is making do with limited resources and while I was sometimes pleasantly surprised by how it fared, it rarely excited or delighted me in the way that other budget phones this year have.

Realme 5 may not be carrying all the latest features of a 2019 mid-range smartphone but it excelled a lot more in certain areas. And those areas are what people actually care about. Sometimes, all you need is a phone that can reliably last you without looking for a wall plug. And when you need to capture moments in front of you, the 12MP main sensor is reliable, the 8MP ultrawide is immersive, and the 2MP macro lets you get creative.

Under practical field conditions, the realme 5 delivers close to the mark with stellar endurance. Even with heavy use – data on all day, several hours of gaming and YouTube, an hour worth of phone calls and even a Skype call for an hour, the realme 5 still had more than enough juice to last through well to sundown the next day. If you’re a frugal user, you’ll likely get over two days of battery life.

Within a few months, realme is back again to release a brand new smartphone in the affordable mid-ranger series. This is the realme 5 and it packs some upgrades compared to the realme 3 that we loved – and we are going to talk about it here.

Realme 5 offers a larger display, a cleaner UI and better design when compared with the successor. However, we think that features like camera abilities can be improved. Having said that the camera may not be an issue for many, given the price point and the user base.

The Realme 3 was already impressive when we reviewed it six months ago, and the Realme 5 has set a new standard for budget phones. While it has its fair share of shortcomings (like the unnecessary macro camera and the phone itself being heavier than usual), the Realme 5 offers a lot of features that you typically wouldn’t find on a budget phone: 128GB internal expandable storage, 4K video recording, huge 5000mAh battery, speedy Snapdragon 665 processor, and Realme’s impressive image processing algorithm for images.

Sure enough, the Realme 5 can take over the Realme 3’s title as the budget king. Both devices have almost similar prices at launch, but the Realme 5 leveled up several aspects that the Realme 3 had. It’s a little hard to believe that this device is an entry-level one. If you’re contemplating on getting a budget device, do consider the Realme 5 among your options.

The Realme 5 is one of two amazing devices you can get for its asking price and offers an amazing bang for the buck. Unfortunately, market availability is limited to select few markets so outside of those you will be buying a gray import.

In terms of the rest of the hardware, the realme 5 officially comes in three subvariants that are otherwise identical save for how much RAM and how much onboard storage they have. At the time of writing, three variants are known to exist – a 3GB RAM/32GB, a 4GB RAM/64GB and a 4GB RAM/128GB variant which was what our test unit packed. Which storage variant will be available for sale in Malaysia is up in the air at the moment though our test unit would be the most likely candidate.

Powering the Realme 5 is a Snapdragon 665 processor, making it the first non-Pro Realme (aside from the Realme C1) to come with a Qualcomm chipset. Our review unit comes with 4GB RAM and 128GB internal storage—the latter being expandable via a dedicated MicroSD slot. Performance-wise, the Realme 5’s Snapragon 665 chipset should perform better than the Helio P60 found on the Realme 3, though we have to do our usual tests and benchmarks to confirm if this is true.

At a starting price of Rs 9,999, Realme 5 can be your best option in this price range, thanks to quad-camera setup, an improved processor and huge battery. If you are willing to spend more, you can also consider the Realme 5 Pro which comes with full HD display, fast charging, and 48MP primary camera. The phone competes with Xiaomi’s Redmi 7S which comes with a 48MP rear camera sensor and an FHD+ display for the same price.

The USP of the Realme 5 is its quad camera setup, which is functional but not exactly mind-blowing. You do get a good number of shooting modes that offer different perspectives, but don't expect great quality from all the sensors. Despite a quad camera setup, the Realme 5 isn't the best camera phone in its segment. The Redmi 7S offers a more impressive 48MP dual camera setup for the same price, but the Realme 5 is the one to go for when it comes to battery life and an attractive design.

The realme 5 seems a notable upgrade over the realme 3 – the bigger battery, the more powerful CPU and the quad cameras are improved in this generation. The quad-camera setup is impressive and it’s a great addition to the segment while others in the camera tech are left out in the cold with dual (or triple camera setup). This is the first smartphone in India to offer four cameras at the back in this segment. What’s more impressive is its big 5,000 mAh battery coupled with the HD+ screen ensures that the phone can last as much as a couple of days. That said, you don’t need to look for a smartphone if you want a great performance and a good battery life as far as the pricing is concerned. The Snapdragon 665 is convincing for the price so as the battery life.

Despite lacking a Full HD display and a glass build, the Realme 5 is still a great package that delivers where it counts. The software is perfectly mated to the hardware, the battery lasts forever, and the cameras deliver consistently good images.

Overall, Realme 5 is a good option to consider for under Rs 10,000, thanks to good cameras, long battery life and a stylish design. But the phone faces some tough competition from Xiaomi’s Redmi 7S, which has a 48MP rear camera sensor and an FHD+ resolution display for a similar price. The choice really comes down to what features you are ready to compromise on. If the screen resolution does not bother you and you are happy with quad-cameras, then Realme 5 is a good choice. The cameras and performance are comparable as well.

The Realme 5 is a significant upgrade over the Realme 3 which was launched a few months earlier. The best thing about the Realme 5 is a complete package that delivers the best user experience along with photography. In the price range of 10K, it is the best device you can go for.

Which is not to say that it does not face stiff competition. We have already spoken of the Mi A3 which starts at Rs 12,999 and comes with the same processor, albeit with a higher megapixel count on the main sensor (and one fewer camera) and an AMOLED display. Well, there is also the Redmi Note 7S, which has a slightly older processor but packs in some serious camera muscle and good design. Will the Realme 5 put those worthies in the Red (mi)? We will be making comparisons, lots of them, in the coming days. Stay tuned. But as of now, we can definitely say that the Realme 5 adds a new chapter to the Realme-Redmi wars. And if that does not tell you something, nothing will!

The Realme 5 is a significant upgrade over the Realme 3 (Review), and the fact that its pricing starts just below Rs. 10,000 is commendable. Compared to the Realme 3, you get a slightly better processor, nearly two-day long battery life, and improved cameras. Plus, the addition of the wide-angle and macro cameras definitely gives you more creative freedom to capture different types of shots.

It is quite remarkable to see a quad-camera setup on a device that is priced under Rs 10,000. But we would have been happier if the company would have provided a full HD display also to make it an ideal choice under Rs 10,000 price bracket. Stay tuned for our Realme 5 review before making your final purchase decision.

The Realme 5 and Realme 5 Pro deliver great value at cut-throat prices and it seems Realme continues to be well-geared to successfully compete with Xiaomi's Redmi phones. It's quick update cycle means it's always able to deliver great value-for-money and up to date hardawre. We'll know more about how good these two phones really are once we've completed our full reviews in the coming week or so. Stay tuned!
