Reviews for the Razer Blade 14 RTX 4070

While gaming laptops are mostly about performance, the same does not apply to the Razer Blade 14. It is adequately powerful to handle heavy gaming, but this is not a value-for-money offering, instead, it is a premium laptop, especially for those, who want both style and substance. This laptop is for those, who want a MacBook-like gaming machine, which can handle AAA titles and is also easy to carry around. With a starting price of $2,649.99 or approximately Rs 2,20,478, this is definitely on the experience side. However, for what it offers, it deserves that price tag.

In this video, I go through a complete unbox, talk about each aspect I hope they improved, and looked at some of the stand-out features of the Razer Blade 14. I also take a moment to tear down the laptop to look at the inside and see what this Razer Blade 14 is made of.

The 2023 Razer Blade 14 is proof you don’t need a giant beast of a laptop with a brick the size of a suitcase for an exceptional gaming experience. In just a 14-inch chassis, you have a laptop that has a gorgeous-looking and large QHD+ 240Hz 16:10 display, and respectable CPU and GPU performance, and yet it’s small and lightweight enough to go anywhere you go. It also has a fantastic battery life so you can play longer without interruption. Admittedly, it’s not cheap, but compared to what you’d pay for some larger premium 16-inch laptops, approximately $4,000, $2,799.99 doesn’t seem that bad. For that reason and its excellent portability and versatility, the 2023 Razer Blade 14 is a class act that I for one would be very happy to own.

Razer has hit it out of the park with the 2023 Razer Blade 14. It has some of the best available laptop hardware currently on the market, and it has one of the crispest displays I've had the pleasure of gaming on. However, it's not just the specs that Razer got right. It's sturdy, quiet, compact, and can transition seamlessly from gaming to productivity. Even the small flourishes are done correctly, like the backlit function row that changes colors when holding the FN key or the even distribution of USB ports. I could go on about all the small details that either made my experience more convenient or more enjoyable, but the conclusion is that I liked the Blade 14 a lot more than I was expecting. The 2023 Blade 14 isn’t perfect, of course.

This year’s Razer Blade 14 refresh has been outfitted with the latest specs, including the AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS CPU, which sports a 5.2 GHz max clock speed and eight cores/16 threads, and up to the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 GPU. Despite containing such powerful and normally heavy components, it still manages to remain lightweight and thin, a contrast to the much larger laptop models like the 16-inch and 18-inch ones. And not only are the specs themselves impressive, but the overall performance is too. The laptop can get hot during more intensive gaming sessions but it never once stuttered, slowed down, or froze. Its chassis is simply all black with the logo in green, the distinctive style of Razer products. There’s also a white version called Mercury, but unfortunately no Quartz from the 2022 model.

We have to look at the price first – and I think that made me wince. It’s USD $2.7k or when we do a quick conversion – around RM12k. And that is just a very difficult pill to swallow. There is another alternative laptop that we can consider – and that’s the ROG Zephyrus G14. It has very similar specs – same screen resolution, same processor, but with 32GB RAM, 165Hz refresh rate, and an RTX 4060 Laptop instead. Unfortunately, the RTX 4070 version of the Zephyrus G14 is not coming to Malaysia. So, if you want a thin 14-inch gaming laptop with a great GPU – then the Razer Blade 14 is here for you.

The Razer Blade 14 does suffer from a dull, disappointing display, a mediocre keyboard, and battery life that doesn't entirely live up to the promise of its compact form factor. These are unfortunate issues for a laptop that starts around $2,400 and goes up from there. But the Blade 14 has what counts: performance. It achieved benchmark results that aren’t far off the Razer Blade 16 and other large laptops, especially in PC games. That’s impressive for a laptop that weighs just over four pounds. If you already or plan to frequently travel with a laptop, you’ll find the Blade 14 is less annoying to pack and carry around than the Blade 16 or even a 15-inch gaming laptop like the MSI Katana 15, yet has similar performance when it’s time to crack open a Mountain Dew and get to business. In the end, the Razer Blade 14 is not hard to recommend.

Our sample of the Razer Blade 14 (2023) was sent to us by AMD, however the CPU part of the equation did not initially strike us as anything particularly exciting. The eight-core Ryzen 9 4940HS CPU hums along at 4.0GHz+ on all cores while sipping a mere 40W-50W at an operating temperature under 80 degrees C with the cooling fans working at inaudible levels. And yet, when you read those words, that is a pretty remarkable summary. AMD is beating Intel on performance while using half the power, and that is exactly what we have come to expect from Team Red. Goodness how things have turned around in the past three years! We discussed the XDNA AI engine in our video and the implementation is currently negligible. We are familiar with background blurs on webcams and photos and will need something more dramatic to raise the level of interest.

The Razer Blade 14 is the best gaming laptop you can buy right now. We already expect laptops at this price point to offer solid productivity performance alongside the staggering power of the latest and greatest graphics card, but Razer went above and beyond in every facet of this machine. Boasting a sturdy build that reflects its premium price point, gorgeous display with high nits of brightness and alluring color depth, an absolutely banging speaker system, and great battery life, this is an all-around phenomenal package. You can find other laptops that are superior to this in certain categories, but the Razer Blade 14 is a jack-of-all-trades that does everything wonderfully. If you’re willing to spend a few hundred dollars extra for a more powerful machine with worse battery life in a heavier chassis, the MSI Raider GE78 HX is a great pick. Otherwise, Razer has knocked it out of the park with this one.

The 2023 Razer Blade 14 gets updated CPUs and GPUs. As ever, this is a posh, black MacBook of a gaming laptop with a CNC aluminum anodized chassis, exquisite attention to fit and finish and a price tag to match. It has 1 4” QHD+ full P3 gamut 240Hz display, 140 watt NVIDIA RTX 4060 / 4070 dedicated graphics and AMD’s new Ryzen 9 7940HS processor (5.2GHz, 4nm, Zen 4). New are 2 RAM slots for upgradable memory and there’s a full HD webcam with Windows Hello and a privacy shutter. It competes with the Alienware X14 and Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 and perhaps even the 14” MacBook Pro.

If there is one thing I will give Razer credit for, it’s that the brand is consistent. Three generations on, and my experience with Blade 14 2023 feels just as solid as when I first reviewed its progenitor. Once again, much like its predecessors, the Ryzen 9 7940HS has proven itself as one hell of a power efficient processor, and there really wasn’t any doubt that the RTX 4070 would deliver a great gaming experience, although as a last minute observation, I think 140W may be a tad bit overkill. Especially when an RTX 4090 Mobile can run at full whack on just 125W. The only drawback I can think of to owning the Blade 14 2023 is its asking price: with a starting price of US$2399 (~RM11,116), you really are paying a premium for this machine.

If it wasn’t obvious reading through this article, we really like the Ryzen 9 7940HS-powered Razer Blade 14. Despite its relatively small 14” / .7” thin, 4lb form factor, this machine handles an 8-core / 16-thread CPU and powerful GPU with aplomb – for all intents and purposes, the Razer Blade 14 offers performance about on par with much larger, previous-gen laptops featuring higher-power HX-series processors and beefier GPUs. The Razer Blade 14’s design is also very attractive in our opinion. The machine is built from premium materials and exudes quality from every angle. If you’re OK with some sharp edges, and couple of green accents, and dig the matte black and clean lines, you’ll love how the Razer Blade 14 looks and feels in person.

Overall the Razer Blade 14, powered by the latest Ryzen 9 7940HS processor, is a quality notebook with solid levels of performance and adequate battery life, and it has enough style and substance to make it a worthwhile purchase. The Ryzen 9 7940HS (8C/16T) itself is very comparable performance-wise with the desktop Zen 4 chips, the Ryzen 7 7700 (8C/16T), and Ryzen 5 7600 (6C/12T), and it is clear that Zen 4 in the notebook space showcases AMD's incredible power and performance efficiency. The Razer Blade 14 is the ideal showcase for this.

Overall, the 2023 Blade 14 is a solid laptop with a really strong processor inside that could be a real mainstream success — except that its high price pushes it into a pretty niche category. I can think of three possible advantages that the Blade 14 could have over a Zephyrus G14 that has the exact same chips inside. There’s the higher-refresh-rate screen. There’s the RGB keyboard. There’s the fact that it’s three-tenths of an inch thinner (though it is also, I will point out, close to half a pound heavier). And then there’s the general aesthetic; some people no doubt prefer the Blade’s unobtrusive black to the G14’s slightly more eclectic dot matrixes and such. But that’s it. And even if all those things are true, I don’t see the $850, and I can’t imagine my eventual testing of the G14 changing my mind unless our test unit is a complete potato.

Razer’s new Blade 14 slices right through the competition. Revamped with a 16:10 screen and the latest parts from AMD and Nvidia, this eminently portable 14-incher keeps up with much larger gaming laptops without any real compromises. An all-aluminum bosy, a bright screen, long battery life, end-user upgradability, and quiet cooling fans are just some of its many highlights. Pricing is the only major turnoff. Razer no longer sells anything that could be considered a budget configuration, but on the other hand, it’s not more expensive than other machines in this elite tier. Overall, the Blade 14 doesn’t miss a beat, easily earning our Editors' Choice award.

Overall, the 2023 Razer Blade 14 comes with some significant improvements over the previous model — a faster screen, better performance, better surface temperatures, and finally user-upgradeable components. It also comes at a higher price. The previous model was available starting at $1,800, while you’ll need to spend at least $2,400 to get your foot in the door with the 2023 version. It’s worth the price, no doubt. However, Razer competed well with a machine like the Zephyrus G14 in the previous generation, offering a bump in build quality for a similar bump in price. Now, the Blade 14 ends up $750 more expensive for an almost identical configuration, so although it’s worth the price, there’s a much higher premium placed on build quality. I recommend picking up the Razer Blade 14 if that extra build quality is something you look for in a laptop. I’m knocking down the score compared to last year’s model just a hair due to the price, but this is still a laptop worthy of carrying the Blade 14 badge.
