The Samsung Chromebook Pro skews a little too heavily towards being an Android tablet. Regardless, it’s a solid hybrid that brings us one step closer to the perfect marriage between Chrome OS and Android.

If you're the type of user who is more interested in a great display or S Pen support, the Pro is definitely worth a look. It can do double duty as a stylus-driven tablet and a solid laptop better than the Chromebook Flip. But for the average computer user who wants a comfortable laptop that can last all day, the Pro comes up just a little short.

This is the perfect Chrome OS device for users needing an Android tablet for 70 to 90% of the time that flips back into a traditional laptop for writing emails and the odd article. If your use case is the same, this is the hybrid you need.

I’ll be straightforward: I wasn’t crazy-excited about the Pro showing up. Don’t get me wrong, I was happy to get one for review and happy to take another look. I just wasn’t excited like I was back in January.

The Samsung Chromebook Pro and Plus are the first Chromebooks to include an embedded stylus and support Android apps as soon as you log in. The lightweight, aluminum chassis and crisp, vivid display also help define these machines as premium 2-in-1s. However, if you don't need the stylus or premium screen, Asus's Chromebook Flip C302CA costs $50 less, has a much better keyboard and offers more internal storage; it does not come with Google Play preloaded, but you can easily get it.

I love my Chromebook Flip and I didn’t think I was in the market for an upgrade. I take that computer with me when I want something really light, or if I’ve forgotten to charge my iPad Pro. When I really need to get work done, though, I still rely on my MacBook Pro or Surface Book, both of which cost well more than twice the price of this Chromebook Pro.

Luckily, you get to wait and see if Google fixes the Pro’s many problems. I’ll be back here to let you know how that goes. But for right now, know this: the dream of the just-right Chromebook is alive inside this machine, but it’s still just out of reach.

It is always important to evaluate if a mix of online and Android apps can get the job done for your specific use case, but if that is the case, you should consider the Samsung Chromebook Pro.

See, Google has programmed the Plus and Pro to understand how most people write. As a result, the Chromebooks are able to predict how fast you’re jotting something down, and all but eliminate the kind of lag that makes writing with a stylus feel unnatural. The Plus and Pro’s displays are also pressure sensitive — so if you press hard while writing, you’ll see a wider, darker pen stroke.

The only question for me is whether or not the Chromebook Pro's Intel Core m3 processor is worth the $100 bump in price over the Chromebook Plus model with an ARM chip. Assuming that performance holds up on the Plus, this hardware is even more enticing at just $450. Either way, this line is an excellent one-two punch that brings Samsung back into the conversation of lust-worthy Chromebooks while also diversifying Google's overall Chromebook market with two more great choices.

The Samsung Chromebook Pro isn’t perfect, but it is a step in the right direction. The combo of firm, thin, aluminum body with a mesmerizing screen simply hasn’t been done this well in a Chromebook up until now.

As for pricing and availability, the Samsung Chromebook Pro will be released sometime in late April for $549. Of note, the Google Play store for Chrome will exit beta around the same time. Samsung’s more affordable ARM-powered Chromebook Plus can be preordered right now for $449 on Amazon or on Samsung’s website, and it will start shipping this Sunday, February 12th.

It is not inexpensive for a Chromebook -- it will be priced at $549 when it ships at the end of April (the Chromebook Plus, which will be available this coming Sunday, will list at $449). But for a good looking and performing Chromebook with a durable metal frame, comfortable keyboard and excellent touch display, along with the included stylus, you may find it worth the cost.

The Chromebook Pro brings Android app support, a stylus, and a rotating touch screen to the simple and easy-to-use platform of ChromeOS, to turn this super portable Chromebook into a machine that can provide a well rounded experience for both work and play.

We started off this review likening the Samsung Chromebook Pro to Microsoft's original Surface Pro tablet, and after putting the system through our spate of benchmarks and plenty of real-world use, we find ourselves right back to that notion. There's a lot to like about the hardware Samsung has created, including the stunning screen and slim, premium-feel design.

Samsung's premium Chromebook Pro is one of the first chromebooks to run Android apps. But it's likely only a matter of time before less expensive models roll out with the same functionality.

There’s a lot to like about Samsung’s new Chromebooks, and I think they’re the perfect Android tablet replacement. The screen is great, battery seems decent and there’s enough grunt under the hood to get the job done.

Tim Baxter, president and COO of Samsung Electronics America, kicked off the keynote by admitting 2016 had been a "challenging year" for the company. He later said the company would "very soon be sharing the root-cause report on the Note 7", having spent the past couple of months working with third-party experts and the company's own engineering teams to work out what had caused the supersized smartphones to overheat.
