The Samsung Galaxy A70 gets enough right to make it a good buy at its price. Its huge OLED screen is perfect for watching video, the phone looks great and Samsung’s software may appeal more than some of the Chinese rivals that offer a little more for your money. Very good battery is the final sweetener that makes the A70 very easy to get on with.

For $370, the Galaxy A70 represents amazing value for money, even if this sector of the market is becoming increasingly overcrowded. It has a fantastic screen, brilliant camera setup and massive battery, as well as fast charging and the ability to use two SIM cards and a Micro SD card. The in-screen fingerprint scanner is also a nice touch given the low price. While the Pixel 3a out-guns the Galaxy A70 when it comes to photography prowess, we’re honestly not sure we’d recommend Google’s device over this one. Sure, low-light shooting is better on the Pixel 3a, but we’ve had so much fun with the wide-angle camera on the Galaxy A70 that we’re now wishing that every phone had this feature. While Samsung may be feeling the pinch at the upper end of the smartphone spectrum, if it keeps producing mass-market mid-range devices of this standard, it shouldn’t have much to worry about.

While the A70 feels and looks like a flagship, it’s important to keep in mind that it isn’t a high-end device. It features a not-so-great camera, lacks IP68 water and dust resistance and stereo speakers, and only features Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Flagship smartphones released in 2019 frequently feature Corning Gorilla Glass 6. However, that’s quite typical for mid-range handsets. The Pixel 3a uses an Asahi Dragontail Glass and the Moto Z4 sports Gorilla Glass 3. The Pixel 3a, Moto Z4 and Huawei P30 Lite all lack IP68 water and dust resistance and are missing wireless charging.

In today’s market, the competition is from devices like the Redmi K20 Pro, OnePlus 7, Zenfone 6Z and so on. While most of you might think about 675 as a processor that is not worth the price, given the positioning of this device as a multimedia phone, it hardly matters in my opinion. Also, if you want a more secure Android experience and a refined One UI and Samsung-only features like Pay and so on, this is the only device you can get in the premium mid range segment. The Samsung Galaxy A70 is priced at Rs. 28990 and is available from Flipkart, Samsung e-Shop and offline stores.

The Samsung Galaxy A70 presents many interesting features including the super AMOLED display and on-screen fingerprint scanning support. However, there are few setbacks, the fingerprint is very slow and shooting in low light also performs below average, as it easily affects the noise and softness of the image. If you are looking for a device under 30K price bracket with attractive features on paper, this Samsung Galaxy A70 should be included in your purchase list.

Whether you opt for one of the bigger brands like Samsung or Motorola or embrace relative newcomers like Nokia and Oppo, it feels like the ground war here is shifting away from subtraction and towards addition. It’s not about how much you can strip out of a flagship to hit a lower price-point. It’s now about how high you can push the baseline of what $600 gets you.

As it stands, the Galaxy A70 is somewhat on the pricey side of things and veers into the lower end of flagship phone pricing at its launch price of RM1,999. What you pay for is a large and vibrant display that tops many other midrange phones, exceptional battery life and otherwise beefy specs in the form of generous amounts of RAM and storage paired with one of the better workhorse Snapdragon 600-series processors out there though the middling cameras may give some users pause. If you’re looking for one of the more powerful phones in the Galaxy A series with scads of endurance and performance, the Galaxy A70 is worth a look.

The Samsung Galaxy A70 is a very balanced mid-ranger, and we enjoyed using it. But it all boils down to the fact that A70 is more or less a stretched Galaxy A50. And if 0.3" difference in the screen diagonal aren't that of a big deal for you, you can easily save yourself about €100 by going for the A50. But if every single millimeter of screen estate counts, and you want the biggest Super AMOLED on the cheap, then the Galaxy A70 is your go-to phone. It's one very capable mid-ranger (we guess we've already said that a bunch of times), and its only weakness is the night-time photography.

The Samsung Galaxy A70 is average for a mid-range performer but adds value to the package due to its design, Samsung Pay, a thoroughly polished OneUI and reliable battery life. Where it falters dearly is in the camera department and that infuriatingly slow fingerprint scanner.

Samsung has cluttered the mid-range smartphone market like no other brand. The company's A- and M-series are taking on Xiaomi, Oppo and Nokia in the budget and sub-premium categories. The latest of the lot, the Galaxy A70, plays on the company's strength of sporting large, beautiful displays.

There are, however, options in this range and above it. If you can wait a bit and spend a bit more, maybe the OnePlus 7, which has a starting price of Rs 32,999, could be an option with better specs in terms of a Snapdragon 855 processor, 3,700mAh battery and a 48MP rear camera. However, those who want to stick to this price-band can look at options like Oppo F11 Pro with its pop-up selfie camera and 48MP+5MP clicker at the back. The Vivo V15 Pro is another option with features like a 32MP pop-up selfie camera, 48MP+8MP+5MP triple rear cameras.

The Galaxy A70’s pièce de résistance is no doubt its big and beautiful Super AMOLED display, but it has a lot of other things going for it. Battery life is excellent thanks to the combination of a big battery and an efficient processor, and it gets 25W super fast charging for quicker top-up of the battery than what is possible with regular fast charging on other Galaxy phones. The Snapdragon 675 offers excellent performance in most tasks, the software is packed with most of the same features as the Galaxy S10, and there’s an ever-useful ultra-wide camera that makes Samsung phones stand apart from the competition in every segment.

Overall, the Galax A70 offers a great set of specifications and follows a similar path as the Galaxy A50. The A70 isn't as experimental with its design as the Galaxy A80, but there is some comfort in familiarity. But there are two reasons to buy the Galaxy A70 above all else: A large and gorgeous AMOLED display and long-lasting battery.

This is a device that will be a reliable daily driver, with reliability being the key word here. I didn’t notice a single stutter or slow down in my usage, and the phone could easily play any game I threw at it. The large 4,500 mAh battery can easily last well over a day of use. The large display makes it perfect for heavy multimedia consumers, or for those who spend a large part of their day on social media.

The Samsung Galaxy A70 is great for multimedia consumption and can handle day-to-day tasks without a stutter, even holding its own when it comes to demanding games. The device easily sails through a day of heavy usage, and 25W fast charging is certainly an added bonus. On the downside, the lack of a dedicated night mode and stabilisation might prove to be major red flags for photography enthusiasts. Samsung Pay could be useful, but it might not be a major selling point for everyone.

The Samsung Galaxy A70 is priced at 28,990 rupees (~$420) in India. This makes it the most expensive Galaxy A-series device right now. Yes, the Redmi Note 7 Pro packs the same processor but prima facie, the A70 offers a much more comprehensive package. Between the huge display, well optimized software build, massive battery, fast charging capabilities, and support for Samsung Pay, this is shaping up to be a very interesting device at a pretty good price point.

Samsung's Galaxy A event in Italy is now behind us, but the best bit is yet to come - our hands-on time with the Galaxy A80, of course!
