Reviews for the Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite
The Galaxy S10 will likely be the last member of the S10 family and although due to a few features being omitted its starting MSRP is the lowest, the Samsung smartphone is still an appealing offer thanks to an updated camera setup, a large battery, and a powerful Snapdragon chip.

The Galaxy S10 Lite is Samsung's first true effort at capturing the value-flagship segment. It faces off against the OnePlus 7T and holds its own by focusing on the essentials. Between the reliable build quality, good photography capabilities, and excellent performance, there's not much wrong with this phone.

Almost a year after the launch of the Galaxy S10 Series, Samsung launched ‘Lite’ versions of the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10. While Samsung has a premium flagship lineup, budget lineup, mid-range lineup of smartphones, the company has now tested waters in the affordable flagship category with the launch of Galaxy S10 Lite. The Galaxy S10 Lite aims to offer the same goodness of the Galaxy S10 but at a much lower price. I have been using the phone for some time and here’s my review of the Galaxy S10 Lite Indian variant with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage.

The Galaxy S10 Lite is the best value flagship Samsung has released to date, but the $650 pricing makes the phone a non-starter. The Snapdragon 855 chipset has plenty to offer in 2020, and the 4500mAh battery easily delivers over a day's worth of use, but the 60Hz display and lack of water resistance or wireless charging make the S10 Lite a poor choice.

A classic underdog story: there are things that should count against this phone, but that really don't. Sure, there's not the most advanced camera setup or 5G, but the S10 Lite has flagship internals that will make you question why you would spend more elsewhere.

The Galaxy S10 Lite's battery and processor could put it ahead of the Android competition. An ultra-low price would seal the deal. We're curious to see how the S10 Lite's cameras, particularly the outlandish 48-MP wide-angle lens and the 5-MP macro lens, stack up against the device's pricier predecessors, especially with the promised software update introducing some of the features that impressed us when we reviewed the Galaxy S20.

The Galaxy S10 Lite is an odd phone, but mostly in its name. It fits more closely with the S20 range and there’s actually not much ‘Lite’ about it at all. Overall, it ticks most of the boxes for those looking for an affordable Samsung flagship.

The Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite is Samsung’s attempt to capture the high-end market. This smartphone gives a tough competition to the OnePlus 7T with the specs it offers but Is it better than the OnePlus 7T? I’d say no but this doesn’t mean that the S10 Lite is bad. The smartphone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset and thanks to that there are no performance issues. The camera does a decent job and in addition to this, it is powered by a massive 4500mAh that makes the smartphone last easily for 1.5 days which is impressive.

The S10 Lite offers a great battery, wonderful display, great camera, usable user interface, and ticks off pretty much every boxes you’d look for. Yes, there has been cost cutting to some extent in the form of going for a plastic back (Samsung may call it glastic, but it’s still plastic) but it’s not a deal breaker. If you want a flagship phone and can live with a generation old chipset (frankly, it doesn’t matter in real life usage), the Galaxy S10 Lite comes highly recommended.

The Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite is a weird device. There’s nothing "lite" about it — it has the hardware of a 2019 flagship and it certainly holds its own as an upper-tier phone. You could say that it has been launched as a cheaper alternative to the Galaxy S20, but the fact is that Samsung is now selling the regular old Galaxy S10 phones, which are still quite nice in their own right, at discounted prices as well.

Samsung has tried to break into the budget flagship segment more than a few times, most notably with the A series of devices. However, the Galaxy S10 Lite represents perhaps its most ambitious attempt to get into OnePlus-land. The phone itself bears little resemblance to the original S10, but its performance could unsettle some people. Pun intended.

If you compare it with the premium sibling Galaxy S10, you will find several features missing in the Galaxy S10 Lite. These include the ingress protection rating for water and dust resistance, stereo speakers, wireless charging, higher screen resolution and DeX support. Yet, it is Samsung’s best bet to take on other heavyweights in the premium midrange segment. That is because it has not compromised on the features that you expect a premium midrange smartphone to cut corners on — design, imaging, performance and on-battery time. The Galaxy S10 Lite brings some freshness to the premium midrange segment, which at present is dominated by Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus.

When the Galaxy S10 Lite launched, it did look like a promising phone. I was not sure the camera would be up to the claims. And yes, it will compete with the existing OnePlus 7, OnePlus 7T and others given the price. But after having used it, I can say the camera is quite impressive. It does need some software tweaks to make it better. The overall performance is what one expects in a premium phone and the battery life is excellent. Given all of this, the price is just right for the S10 Lite.

The Galaxy S10 Lite is a good package, but at nearly Rs. 40,000, we think the price is a bit on the higher side. We say this especially since you could instead buy the top-end variant of the OnePlus 7T (Review) for less, and that phone offers additional features such as a high refresh-rate display, a more premium glass and metal body, stereo speakers, a telephoto camera, and a more current processor. The base variant of the Asus ROG Phone 2 (Review) is also available for under Rs. 40,000, and offers much better gaming features. Then there's the Oppo Reno 2 (Review) as well, which has a very good hybrid zoom camera system.

All in all, the Galaxy S10 Lite acts like a flagship device with a high starting price tag but fails to deliver in some key areas in which the "flagship killers" have it all. Overall, it's a great phone but it's not particularly competitive at its launch price and at this particular point in time.

By launching the Galaxy S10 Lite and the Note 10 Lite in India at an aggressive price point, Samsung has made a massive statement. However, it’s definitely the former, that’s more interesting of the two, and one that even without an iconic feature such as the S-Pen looks capable enough to take on the competition head-on.

On its own merits, the Galaxy S10 Lite is very well constructed for a phone with excellent build quality. Where it impresses is that Samsung has managed to cram a battery this large into the phone while retaining the slim design that the Galaxy S10 series are known for with only a very modest tradeoff in weight; competing brands with a battery this large will usually end up with a phone the size of a brick and the weight to match which makes it quite a feat of engineering. Stay tuned for the upcoming full-on Galaxy S10 Lite Malaysia review after we put it through its paces.

Samsung’s latest affordable Galaxy S series phone packs the largest battery out of the entire S10 series at 4,500mAh with 25W fast charging support via a USB Type-C port. While we lacked the provided official charger to go with it, we used a fast charger from a Galaxy S10 and managed to get a 50% charge in about an hour from dead zero which is par for the course.

On the software front, the Galaxy S10 Lite runs Android 10 with One UI 2.0 out of the box. Features like Bixby Routines, Edge screen, and Screen recorder are included, but, for some reason, there’s no Samsung DeX for PC support. The Galaxy A90 5G has it, and I hope Samsung will bring the functionality to the S10 Lite with a software update, as it’s perfectly capable of running DeX. Hopefully, security updates will come out regularly as well; Samsung is yet to say if the S10 Lite will get monthly or quarterly security updates.

Taken on its own merit this is an accomplished phone But when lined up against the other three S10 models in the range, it just feels confused. The Lite is larger than all the others, has a greater battery capacity than any of them, an equally heavyweight Snapdragon 855 processor as the other three, and even some features than the 'not-Lite' models lack, such as the main 48MP camera unit. So it's a potentially great phone, just one that arrives at the wrong time and with a confusing name attached to it.

Launching this S10 phone so soon before the S11 (or S20 or whatever Samsung ends up calling its next flagship) feels like an odd move. Would this not have worked better as the Galaxy S11 Lite? Still, it's got a big screen, a design Samsung fans will appreciate and hopefully a price that makes it a contender for best mid-range phone.

It's also, however, a phone with an appeal that overlaps that of the S10e and the higher-specced Samsung Galaxy A-series of phones. We anticipate that the S10 Lite's identity will be embodied by its large size and lower cost, but unless Samsung strategically chooses to limit regional availability of its two 'lite' phones, the S10 Lite, as good as it is, might get lost in the mix.
