Reviews for the Samsung Galaxy S20

With almost all the main features of the S20 Ultra bar its huge camera and battery, the Samsung Galaxy S20 is arguably better value for money, with a gorgeous ultra-premium display, intuitive UI and still-impressive photographic capabilities. Perhaps the best Android phone on the market for casual users.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 isn’t the most cutting-edge of Samsung’s S20 lineup – that honor goes to the Galaxy S20 Ultra – but it’s still a powerful phone with an ergonomic and attractive design, and the introduction of new features like 5G, the 120Hz display and upgraded rear cameras make it an outstanding handset in its own right.

For most people, the Samsung Galaxy S20 is still one of the best Android phone available right now. Especially with the cheaper prices around. However, I would seriously consider the Galaxy S20 FE which has a Snapdragon 865 and better battery life, along with superior performance. There's also the OnePlus 8T which has a similarly ace display and the Pixel 5 if you're looking for something even smaller.

With the Galaxy S20, Samsung has played it safe – opting for refinements over innovation. However, these refinements were craved by many and culminate in a cracking experience – from the stunning display and manageable size to top-notch photography. Galaxy S20 rivals other flagships in almost every category, making it an easy recommendation for its consistency across the board.

Samsung already confirms the non-availability of the cheaper variant of S20 (S20 Lite). Those who are looking for a new premium flagship from Samsung the S20 is the only option available right now. Still, the S20’s isn’t the latest best offering from Samsung. That’s why for the high-end buyers, there are two options available Galaxy S20 Plus and S20 Ultra. It brings stylish design, top of the line hardware, 120Hz display, and solid cameras to be your next daily driven phone.

Overall, our top pick among Samsung's new Android phones is the Galaxy S20 Plus, because it offers a larger display and longer endurance. But for that you'll have to step up to $1,199. If you prefer a smaller device, you should be very pleased with the regular Galaxy S20.

Samsung's Galaxy S20 range is a safe bet, if not a little on the expensive side. While so many smartphones are available at a lower price point, Samsung's range just about defines the category for the year ahead these days - the right combination of features, capability, bells and whistles and longevity; one of the few brands that has software updates for a good while, with good retail support, good accessory support and more. If you can afford one, it's a purchase that'll easily last a couple of years.

The S20 and S20+ are basically the same phone, aside from their differences in size, battery and mmWave support. The Plus also has an additional depth sensor on its back for slightly better portrait mode and AR effects. Are those features worth the extra $200 for the larger phone? Only if you really want a bigger screen, extra long battery and super fast 5G on T-Mobile. Verizon offers a mmWave-compatible S20, so your decision will also depend on what carrier you’re on. For most people, though the base S20 is plenty of phone. In the case of this year’s S20 trio, smaller is so much better. I felt like the Ultra was overkill when it came to size, camera features and most importantly, price. At $1,000, the S20 costs about the same as its competitors, though the S20+ still comes in at a premium. But they’re also the best-looking Android flagships around with speedy performance and long battery life. For that money, you’ll also be getting excellent displays and blazing 5G speeds where available. If $1,000 is too much for you, you might want to wait for other options like the rumored Pixel 4a or consider the S10 series, which could offer most of what you need for a fraction of the price. Right now, though, the S20 and S20+ are the best Android phones money can buy.

The S20 avoids that pitfall. Samsung's marketing has been quite straightforward in describing the upgrades it brings and the phone manages to deliver a solid and consistent experience all at more palatable pricing. In fact, the exuberant pricing on the Ultra makes the S20 look a pretty good deal in comparison. Which may have been the strategy all along.

Of Samsung's three new Galaxy S20 5G phones, the smallest, cheapest Galaxy S20 is my favorite. It's just as stuffed with top-shelf features as the Galaxy S20 Plus and S20 Ultra, from its tack-sharp screen to advanced camera skills. But apart from screen and body size, the differences between S20 models are almost negligible. Of course, there are people who will want the S20 Plus and even Ultra instead, but for specific, personal reasons, and not out of a marked advantage in tools or performance. And yes, I do mean the Ultra's 108-megapixel camera and 100x zoom. (Wait for it…)

As someone who still owns – and loves – a Galaxy S9+, who lives and breathes Samsung, who used an S10 for a while and a Note 9 for four solid months, the S20 is… underwhelming. It’s very much an iteration on what’s come before – and it comes at the cost of numerous omissions. Compared to the S9/Note9 series, you’re missing that much-loved audio jack, you’re missing fast capacitive fingerprint scanning, you’re missing heart and blood sensors, you’re missing iris scanning. Compared to the S10, you’re missing that jack and you’re missing a real telephoto camera.

Samsung decided to call this phone the “Galaxy S20” instead of the Galaxy S11. Was it because it didn’t want to be a number behind the iPhone 12, which is presumably coming later this year? Yes, at Scott’s wedding the phone battery was looking a little sad after about 8 hours off the charger, but bear in mind this involved shooting quite a few photos, and the venue didn’t have an awful lot of mobile coverage, meaning lots of hunting for signal – known to destroy even the largest of batteries.

Single Take was the feature I tested the most in my hands-on time with the Galaxy S20 Ultra. As before, they're iterative upgrades on their predecessors, but they come with vital quality of life improvements, such as the higher refresh rate and more responsive display and smaller hole-punch camera. They're not life-changing, but they do matter, and of course Samsung has continued to improve the camera while still creating one of the sleekest-looking Android phones around.

It’s not all just pure hardware though, Samsung has also added a very useful One Take feature that captures a shot using every conceivable mode and filter on the phone with just one press of a button so that you needn’t have to get your subject to continue reposing all the time. This feature is amazing, more so when pressed for time and you need to capture a lot of different footage styles.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 is going to be the first 5G phone for a lot of people, and it comes with a 64MP camera and 3x optical and 30x digital zoom to boot. It’s a leap ahead of the S10, but it also carries a price hike and is outclassed by two bigger phones: the Galaxy S20 Plus and S20 Ultra.

Of the three phones, the Galaxy S20 is the most compact and manageable, and many potential buyers will find this appealing, as we did. However, the Galaxy S20 Ultra is by far the most interesting of the three, even though its the most unwieldy and will be much more expensive. We're eager to test Samsung's new 108-megapixel sensor and also the hybrid zoom systems in all three phones, so stay tuned to Gadgets 360 for that.

At Unpacked 2020, they announced some rather interesting prices for all three phones with the Galaxy S20 priced from US$999, the Galaxy S20+ from US$1,199 and the S20 Ultra from US$1,399 with the phones shipping this coming March 6 onwards. We’ll keep you posted on local prices, the usual preorder goodies and other details when we get them from Samsung Malaysia.

Is the Samsung Galaxy S20 (Galaxy S20+) a better deal than the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra?

Samsung has earned a place as one of the top three smartphone manufacturers in the world, and its latest crop of devices looks to be its most promising yet. While not a radical departure from previous iterations, the new Galaxy S20 and S20+ are attractive and well-specced. If they prove to be as good in practice as they look upon first impression, Samsung will probably have another solid hit on its hands.

I believe Samsung has crafted winning devices. The price premium is likely thanks to the 5G radios built into each. Every phone maker will charge more for 5G this year, and Samsung happens to be first out the door with its devices. The cameras appear to be worth the upgrade, though whether or not people can afford these phones will be dependent on carrier monthly pricing plans.

Samsung’s aim with the Galaxy S20 lineup is to offer something for all customers across the entire flagship spectrum. So it has stuffed the new models with the latest in mobile technology while leaving enough of a gap between the models so that they don’t end up cannibalizing each other’s sales.

Even though the Galaxy S20 Ultra is definitely going to soak up most of the spotlight at this unveiling, with its fancy new 108MP and periscope cameras, we have very little to complain about the regular S20 and the S20+. Growth-spurt aside, the pair actually looks all round better in most aspects compared to its predecessors. An achievement, which, like we already mentioned, should not be taken lightly. We only Samsung has done something different to the design of these babies. Oh, and where's the white color this time around, Samsung? Sigh, we can't have it all.
