Reviews for the Sony Xperia 5
The Xperia 5 is not the first smartphone that Sony has released with a 21:9 display. We have already seen the Xperia 1 and Xperia 10 trying to distinguish themselves from their peers with this aspect ratio, and now Sony wants to persuade people that 21:9 is the future with the Xperia 5. Having such a tall display has proven practical in our experience, but the Xperia 5 falls short of expectations in some crucial areas, as our review will reveal.

The Sony Xperia 5 is an elegantly designed, reasonably priced flagship phone, but quirky ergonomics, frustrating cameras and a lacking feature set makes it a poor alternative to the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S20 and iPhone 11.

Sony's Xperia 5 smartphone features flagship-level hardware and build quality, but falls short on a number of other key factors.

The Xperia 1 is clearly the flagship smartphone but the Sony Xperia 5 certainly feels like one, just smaller. It’s a compact smartphone that looks good, packed with flagship-level performance thanks to its Snapdragon 855 SoC, and it has a number of surprises up its sleeve, such as the battery life and display.

More forgiving on the wallet and retaining the same triple-camera setup as the flagship Xperia 1, the Xperia 5 will be welcomed by budget-conscious Sony smartphone enthusiasts after ultra-wide and telephoto capabilities in their phone. Aside from a few minor differences, image quality is broadly comparable between the two Xperia devices, with the exception of geometric distortion in ultra-wide shots and changes to the depth-sensing algorithms in bokeh mode. Although opportunities for improvement remain in all aspects of the Xperia’s performance—if Sony wants to challenge the top ranked devices in our database—they remain capable devices for the most part; and dedicated cameras for ultra-wide, wide, and telephoto shots will add some versatility to your shooting options.

Essentially a shrunken version of the Xperia 1, this spiritual successor to the Xperia Compact line struggles to reconcile Sony's newfound obsession with tall phones and the smaller form factor. There are some bright spots with the display quality and overall performance, but its awkward design and painfully mediocre triple camera makes recommending the Xperia 5 a tall order.

We have some issues with the Xperia 5; the troublesome NFC and Fingerprint sensor, the bezels, how tall it is. These do reduce its appeal and also look pretty bad up against the near-perfect models released throughout 2019. For those looking for a flagship handset, the iPhone 11, OnePlus 7 and Samsung Galaxy S10 are all cheaper. On the other hand, a lot of people are specifically after a Sony device, and if you liked the Xperia 1 then you should equally enjoy the Xperia 5 because it's almost an exact replica - just smaller and, more crucially, £141 cheaper at £699. Sure, there's some work to be done here, but the Xperia 5 is quite a high five.

If you want a small Android phone, the Galaxy S10E is right there and usually available for the same price or even less. The OnePlus 7T starts at $599. The iPhone 11 has a much better camera and battery life for $50 less. There are so many deals on the regular Galaxy S10 that it’s not hard to find it for less than the Xperia 5.

Sony has made a strong phone, that despite its flagship cost, ultimately appeals to a more niche crowd that favours watching films and shows on the go or fancies themselves as budding movie makers. That said, it’s still a strong all-rounder if you can get past the design and the underwhelming camera. Given Sony’s market share woes, you’ll probably get it in a bundle deal with a PlayStation console or other Sony tech, adding some value.

There are some parts of the Xperia 5 that let the experience down: the fingerprint scanner is irritating and the camera isn't competitive. Put those things to one side and you have a compact and powerful handset, something that will tackle the daily needs of a smartphone user in a respectable design that's not mammoth big.

The Xperia 5 costs £529 SIM Free at Amazon or a quarter off its suggested retail price, that is still a good whack cheaper than the Xperia 1; the main difference between the two being a slightly bigger 4K OLED touchscreen display which - in theory - should impact the battery life negatively.

Excellent focus and accurate exposure ensure that selfies from the Xperia 5 are sharp, with good brightness. Many problems with color, noise and artifacts, together with acceptable but average results for texture, flash, and bokeh have affected the overall score, however. Front camera image quality remains on par with the more expensive Xperia 1, but both rank towards the bottom of our database.

This is the latest offering from Sony. Like most Sony offerings it is high specification, the 21:9 screen ratio may not suit all and like a lot of recent offerings there is no 3.5mm socket for headphones. Read on for more details of this latest offering to pass my desk courtesy of Vodafone.

Hot on the heels of the Xperia 1, the Xperia 5 is another strong flagship-level phone from Sony, this time offering a slightly better balance between top-end specifications and everyday practicality. The Xperia 5 sacrifices a little of the wow factor for a little more usability – but we’re quite happy with the trade-off.

The Sony Xperia 5 certainly scores highly in all the key areas that smartphone buyers are interested in: design, camera, and battery life. It's raised our hopes for whatever Sony might be planning for 2020 – if it puts together a serious upgrade over the Xperia 1 and Xperia 5, then Apple and Samsung might start to worry.

It’s hard to know what to think of the Xperia 5. It has a superb, cinematic screen, great stereo speakers and solid battery life. However, it’s badly let down by poor biometrics and some strange design choices. If you’re set on a widescreen display and watch a lot of films on your phone, you might be convinced considering its excellent performance. But for regular everyday use there are a number of better options, many of which are more affordable.

This is one of the more polarizing phones I’ve used in a while. On one hand, I absolutely love it — the design is beautiful, functional, and ergonomic. The cameras are fantastic and its software is fun to play with. On the other hand, that fingerprint scanner is maddening, some random crashes left me perplexed and disappointed, and the whole software user experience part needs a once-over by the programming team.

The Xperia 5 is good news for those who find the Xperia 1 too big and expensive. Really, this is the same phone but smaller and cheaper. It's a nice device with some decent specs and interesting features. However, unless you're a Sony fan there are quite possibly better phones available for less money still.

The Compact lives on in the Xperia 5! Sony's created another pocketable (at least by the standards of the day) high-end phone that isn't really missing any of the true flagship's features and, as an added bonus, even outlasts it in the endurance race. The Xperia 5 is then easy to recommend if you're a Sony fan, a Sony Compact fan, or just out for a small top-tier handset. The Pixel 4 might prove to be your thing when it arrives, an iPhone 11 Pro could make sense if you're fruitily inclined, and a selection of reasonably-sized Galaxies exist that may tempt you as well. Esteemed rivals these, and ones that the Xperia 5 can easily take on, so be sure то keep the small(-ish) Sony towards the top of your shortlist.

The Sony Xperia 5 is a smaller, more compact model of the Xperia 1 and it's lovely. The reduction in size makes for a more comfortable one-handed device, while many of the super flagship's features are retained. How the Xperia 5 will perform compared to the flagship Xperia 1 and its competitors remains to be seen for now, but we really like the Xperia 5. Sometimes good things come in smaller packages.

It appears that the demand for compact flagships is still alive and Sony wants a piece of that pie. After all, the company has been doing small Xperias since forever. At first glance, the Xperia 5 is exactly what users sticking to the compact premium smartphone segment are looking for. It can do pretty much everything the Xperia 1 can with almost no compromises, except for the screen resolution. Still, depending on how you look at it, this could be an advantage and you don't really need all those pixels in such a small 6.1-inch diagonal - everything appears to be perfectly sharp.

The Xperia 1 was a great handset, with its 21:9 screen delivering something a bit different to the competition. The Xperia 5 is more of the same, although this time around the screen is a smaller, a more manageable 6.1-inch model. Maintaining the same range of features that the Xperia 5's big brother had but at a cheaper price, this is arguably the more interesting phone.

For ages, Sony has taken its best device of the year and downsized it to a more compact form factor. And so it has again here in 2019 with the Sony Xperia 5, a slightly reduced variant of the Xperia 1 that debuted earlier this year. The new phone carries over most of the former’s specs and features, but does make a few adjustments along the way. Learn more in Android Authority‘s Sony Xperia 5 hands-on look.
