Reviews for the Sony Xperia M2

Sony has provided some great features and UI for a smartphone in their Xperia M2 with little setbacks here and there. For a price bargain of just $300, Sony has created a niche market for Xperia M2 with its all-round performance, design and specs. Overall the smartphone is packed with good features and over-average hardware profile to rival its competitors in the mid-range segment. It’s waterproof and sleek yet intricate design will surely attract a good chunk of audience – not to forget the reasonable price tag.

The Sony Xperia M2 is a solid looking phone that’s let down by its software, screen and camera - not to mention its price. It’s far too expensive for the specs you’re given, as Motorola’s Moto G trumps it in several ways for a lot less cash. There’s no denying its good looks, but if you really must have Sony styling, you’ll be better served ponying up for the full-fat Xperia Z2 or the slightly cheaper Xperia Z1 Compact.

The Sony Xperia M2 Dual is available at Rs 19,000, which is a good pick in this price range although it would make a killing at something like Rs 16,000. The M2 is good premium alternative to the Moto G. It’s got slightly better features and a better design. The Galaxy Grand 2 is also retailing currently for a similar price and if big screen phones are your thing then you’re better off with that.

The Xperia M2 Dual is an average device from a manufacturer who is otherwise quite consistent. The price tag on the device is way too high for the features of the device. It is hard to recommend this device in the competitive mid-ranged smartphone market

We think Sony has cut far too many corners with the M2. The screen is not that great, and its sluggish performance in daily usage is a downer. It has a retail price of Rs. 21,990 but can be found cheaper online. Even at reduced prices, the Sony Xperia M2 Dual doesn't feel like a good bargain considering the Moto G works out as better value for money. However, what the Sony has going for itself is the stellar battery life, expandable storage, and the good (if somewhat boring) design. If you need a good-looking phone in this price range which will last up to two days on a single charge, then by all means consider the Xperia M2. If not, there are other fish in the sea.

The Sony Xperia M2 certainly looks like a premium smartphone, but carries a surprisingly mid-range price tag. With a more impressive camera and more storage, we'd be really impressed with the Xperia M2 for that price, but we think you can get more for your money elsewhere. It's worth investigating the cheaper Moto G, or if you've got a little extra budget the Google Nexus 5 is worth a look, as it has a lot going for it and is still under £300.

Sony has launched its Xperia M2 handset into a very crowded market, one populated with ageing flagships and some already impressive new handsets. Can it build upon the success that the Xperia Z2 has brought though? In short, yes, but that is the really short answer. I can't help but feel that Sony's impressive flagship offering sets a very high standard, and will leave consumers expecting a little more from Sony's midrange offering.

The Sony Xperia M2 is a good phone, but its killer feature is one that works best for poseurs. Namely, the phone can pass for the Xperia Z2 at a distance, and even in-hand for some people. Design does matter in phones, though, and the Xperia M2 looks a whole lot better than the original Xperia M.
