As a Sony flagship model Xperia XZ is responsible for demonstrating top-notch specifications. And if software-wise this phone is similar to other Xperia X devices, hardware-wise we can spot the differences. Xperia XZ uses the best components Sony can offer up to this day. We are again presented with stylish design and special metal construction which is water-resistant looks really premium despite it being prone to fingerprints.

For smartphone photography enthusiasts, Sony’s latest flagship offering, the Xperia XZ, features a 23Mp 1/2.3”-type sensor (5520x4140 pixels)and a wide-angle 24mm-equivalent f/2 lens. Achieving an overall DxOMark Mobile score of 87 points, compared to 88 for its predecessor the Xperia X Performance, it shares many of the same strengths and weaknesses of Sony’s previous device.

We’ve been taking the Sony Xperia XZ as our daily driver for two weeks now and though we generally enjoyed our time with the device, it’s pretty hard to ignore its shortcomings. The fact that it only has 3GB of RAM makes all the difference in terms of performance for those seeking a powerhouse of a smartphone, which a flagship should be. On the other hand, one thing a lot of us look for these days is camera performance and the XZ definitely delivers in that regard. Sony charges a premium for their devices and at Php 37,990, the Japanese brand is definitely asking us to make a considerable dent in our bank accounts. This really puts the Sony Xperia XZ in a tough spot given all the competition it has nowadays from well-known brands and other brands that are slowly upping the ante. If your purse strings are loose and are looking for a phone with a great camera, we would still recommend that you give the Sony Xperia XZ a look despite its shortcomings.

The Sony Xperia XZ is indeed a flagship product that can compete with other flagship rival phones out there. The S$998 price tag seems pretty much par for the course within its tier. While many factors boil down to personal preferences, we can’t deny that the Xperia XZ could strive for an even better battery life. Camera performance on the XZ is one of the better ones we have experienced so far, which is a great plus point for people who want a good Android cameraphone that isn’t from Samsung. All in all, it’s a good smartphone, and even more so for Sony fans who are looking for an upgrade. However, it faces worthy challengers who charge fewer dollars for their flagship phones (like the incoming Moto Z and the OnePlus 3).

While there are some software bugs peppered through the Xperia XZ, at its heart it is still a great phone with a superior camera that is worth boasting about. I’m hoping that Android 7.0 comes to it soon enough to address some of the bugs, but until then you can still confidently use the Xperia XZ as a very competent phone.

There are many smartphones out there in the market at this level – the Samsung Galaxy S7, Apple iPhone 7 and even some from the lower price points like the ZTE Axon 7 and Honor 8. However the design and features of the Sony Xperia XZ can surely make Sony fans (and even others) to take a second look at this flagship device from the land of the rising sun. It is a tough market out there now, but this Sony may just be the ticket for the company to succeed in the sub-RM3000 flagship market.

The Sony Xperia XZ is a handsome choice that's comfortable to hold, and we like the vibrant screen and impressive 10-plus hour battery life. Given the phone’s $699 price tag, though, it’s hard to recommend the XZ over either Samsung’s Galaxy S7 ($669) or the more expensive S7 Edge ($769). Both S7 models sport the same camera that outperformed the XZ in our testing, so we think you’ll get better photos with either Samsung phone.

So, in summary, if you go ahead and buy the Xperia XZ, you will have few regrets, unless you shoot lots of videos. However, the vast majority of people would be better off looking at the latest flagships from OnePlus and Xiaomi, which aren't perfect, but show a degree of refinement that was missing from their predecessors. Or if you are shopping around the Rs. 50,000 mark, you could pick up the Samsung Galaxy S7 or the Galaxy S7 Edge and still be left with some cash to spare.

With a fresh new design language and a bold new name (which includes the new ‘X’ and the previous ‘Z’), I expected the innards on the new flagship to showcase at least a bit of change (if not too much). Sadly, this was not the case and while the 23MP sensor does not stand up to the imaging quality delivered by the competition (even below its price bracket), the smartphone as a whole is an indicator that Sony should just shut shop and let go of the smartphone business if it plans to deliver something similar in its next flagship.

Sony Xperia XZ is a great overall package if you’re looking for a flagship. Camera in the Xperia XZ stands out the most and it looks stylish in terms of design. The Sony Xperia XZ is a good all round phone. IP68 certification, sturdy design and decent performance across all departments including telephony (yes, calling is important aye!). A few years back, all of this would be mostly exclusive to champion flagships that come at the price of XZ. But in today’s world, it’s very imperative that flagships stand out.

As the price rises, expectations also lift up and why wouldn’t they? It’s natural. After all a person is investing his money into something which he expects to be reliable and long lasting. But at times the product could upset you a little and you might feel like your money being misused, and we don’t want this to happen to you. The XZ looks really good, has a good display, neat software, good performance, decent cameras, good battery life, good sounding stereo speakers and water-resistant body. But there's at least one phone out there that does each of this slightly better. Then there is the OnePlus 3. At Rs 51,990 the Xperia XZ is yet another Sony phone, meant strictly for the fans. It's good. Sadly, being good isn't good enough anymore.

The Xperia XZ isn’t a bad phone by any means. A solid attempt from Sony, it brings top of the line hardware and a very pleasing software build. There’s some nifty additions too like the ALKALEIDO metal back and the utilitarian form factor that looks understated yet modern. The proprietary TRILUMINOS display too is rather excellent for media consumption.

The Xperia XZ has a nice, sexy form factor with its premium metal body and 2.5D glass implementation. Its 5.2-inch Full HD display is appreciated and makes operating with one hand fairly easy. One of my personal favorites is its dust- and water-resistant body that I could take with me on beach trips and the like. Performance-wise, we don’t have much complaints on the XZ as it was able to keep up with us during the entire week of using it as our primary phone. The implementation of USB-Type C is also well-appreciated as a sense of future-proofing the device.

This is undoubtedly the phone that should have kicked off the X-rated rebrand of Sony's dwindling smartphone family. With a premium look and feel that revitalises a tired design, a solid, if unspectacular camera and enough satisfying features to make up for the irrelevant ones, the Xperia XZ would have been among 2016's best at the beginning of the year.

The Sony Xperia XZ improves on previous generation handsets in terms of design but lets itself with a lackluster camera. Sony is definitely moving in the right direction but things are still far from perfect, which is why we can’t really recommend this against other flagships. The pricing is still far too expensive and had Sony knocked it down by £50 or so, we’d be inclined to reconsider. As it is, there’s other flagships out there that represent better value for money with better hardware to boot.

The flagship device from the Japanese brand has been priced at Php 37,990 and will be available for pre-order from October 21 to November 6. The only reason you will buy this phone is if you are a Sony fanboy or you want a smartphone with a really good display. When it comes to audio, camera and overall performance, there are better phones available for the same price point. If you don’t mind compromising on the camera a little bit, then you can even consider the OnePlus 3, which is cheaper, but feels faster. With a list price of NZ$1100, Sony is asking a premium price for the Xperia XZ. It’s lovely, yet people willing to pay that much may find another $100 and buy the better-equipped Samsung Galaxy S7. Or, you might choose to save a few hundred and buy the Huawei P9.

At $700, the Sony Xperia XZ is priced like a flagship phone, but it can't match the premium experience of devices like the Samsung Galaxy S7. It lacks a fingerprint sensor, has a lower-resolution display, and mediocre battery life. The unlocked Galaxy S7 is a better pick all around. If you're looking to save some money, the ZTE Axon 7 gets you a sharper display than the Xperia XZ and otherwise similar hardware for $300 less. Most importantly, neither of these phones overheat when shooting video.

As I mentioned, the Xperia XZ is a bit of a tough sell at $699. Sure it is flagship material, but it is also missing a great number of things that make other $699 smartphones worth the price. One is the display. A 1080p display is great for 5.2-inches, but not great for a price tag of $699. The other is the deactivated fingerprint scanner. With most smartphones, even budget ones that are under $200, coming out with fingerprint scanners, it’s tough to see why Sony opted to leave it out, at least not turn it on, with the Xperia XZ. Especially where it probably cost them more to leave the fingerprint scanner dormant on the US models, only.

In short, yes. It’s the best phone Sony have ever made. The screen is vivid and usable in bright sunlight, the fingerprint scanner is the best I’ve ever used and the camera, although tricky to get right, provides stunning results in the right conditions. Sony might have taken a rare step backwards in the design department but the monolithic slab is solidly constructed and not tacky – like some others in flashy gold or silver.

Primary amongst my initial concerns is battery life. Sony has, since the inception of the Xperia range, boasted about “two day battery life” for practically every mobile device the Japanese company has launched. During the press briefing for the XZ, this was nowhere to be seen in the marketing material. In response to a question from a colleague, a Sony executive gave a slightly fluffy answer about the marketing material taking a “different direction”. In the few days I’ve spent with the XZ, battery life doesn’t look like it’s up to par with previous flagship Sony’s. I’ll know more once I’ve put it through The Review Machine.

The Xperia XZ has some things going for it: it has stylish looks and a clean design, it’s conveniently water-proof and features properly positioned dual front-firing speakers. However, there are just so many places where it falls short, especially compared to the strong competition: its display features bluish and not properly balanced colors, it sometimes stutters, it has a fairly scarce 20GB of user-available storage space, its camera is slow and often counter-intuitive, with images and videos that are not on the same level as the ones from iPhones and Galaxies, it lacks quick charging and in the United States it even ships without a fingerprint scanner.

When the Xperia X Performance came out earlier this year, it looked sort of like the flagship but not quite there. No one said anything about an XZ at that time, and the X Performance was judged as a top-shelf model, which it certainly is, but in price alone. Now that the Xperia XZ is here to take over the helm, the X Performance can rest easy. By the looks of it, the Xperia XZ is fully capable of standing its ground against the competition in a lot of respects.

As for the price, we’re led to believe this is a flagship and will be priced accordingly. In all likelihood it will undercut the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S7, but not by enough to make the decision between which to buy very difficult. Again, we’ll update this review when final pricing is revealed, but unless it turns out to be way cheaper than expected, we wouldn’t expect to change our verdict - that the Sony Xperia XZ is a very pleasant also-ran in the great flagship smartphone race of 2016.

Sony's Xperia XZ is an attention-grabbing flagship for it break the standards with respects to its design and colour options instead of going curvy like Apple and Samsung. The Sony Xperia XZ seems to marry the Z series and the X series together, which is what its name suggests, even if that wasn't the reasoning behind it. There are a few changes here and there like the Loop feature which is lovely and the inclusion of USB Type-C but overall, the XZ's design is familiar, as are many of the hardware specs. Unlike the metal-backed XZ, the Compact has a glass back which is the same colour as its glass front and metal sides. Despite its smaller size and expected lower cost, the X Compact is still clearly a flagship phone with the looks, performance and camera to match. It has the same 23-megapixel rear camera and the same smart charging technology as the XZ. The processor if the X Compact is the Snapdragon 650, whereas the XZ uses the higher-spec 820.

But some nagging issues remain, such as the general dullness of Sony's hardware, and the inexplicable lack of fingerprint security in the U.S. models. And although the camera is a lot better than any other Sony phone, it's not as dependable as Samsung's latest.

After years in the smartphone wilderness, it feels like Sony has had the opportunity to reset the balance, only to go straight ahead and make the same old mistakes yet again. Despite only just entering the realms of reality, the Xperia XZ is a phone that already feels out of date. Not just on the core specs front, either, but with its blocky, unforgiving design.
