Reviews for the Sony Xperia XZ1
Family Matters. The XZ1 is the successor to the Sony XZ, Sony's initial high-end smartphone. As such, it seems to have inherited the latter's bias for incorporating some flaws. Nevertheless, the XZ1 is truly a member of the high-end squad.

There's a lot to this phone, and its high-end credentials are not in doubt. It looks good, feels great in your hand and the Sony speciality of waterproofness remains a key, if gimmicky, feature.

More importantly, with February nearly here, a new wave of flagships is just around the corner - possibly a successor to the Xperia XZ1 as well - and you might want to wait and see what’s in store. If patience is not your thing, some of the best phones of 2017 are available at significant discounts compared to their launch prices, and one of them might fit your requirements.

With the Sony Xperia XZ1, Sony has done the impossible: They’ve gone backwards in time. What you get is a phone with massive bezels, a great screen, a disappointing camera, sub-par battery life, great build quality, boring design and a premium price tag.

Sony Xperia XZ1 Dual je plnokrevná vlajková loď, která se nabízí i za poměrně atraktivní cenu – alespoň tedy pokud ji budeme porovnávat s přímými konkurenty. Předností nabízí hned několik, kromě odolné kovové konstrukce a brilantního displeje, například i stereofonní reproduktory a velmi schopným fotoaparátem.

The problem is that at $759 it’s similarly priced to the OnePlus 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S8 – and both phones have more flexible camera setups, better battery life and larger screens than the Xperia XZ1. Watch its pricing in the weeks ahead though, the $759 we’re quoting is what early importers are charging, Sony’s official price and street price may be lower once it’s officially out here.

To conclude, with Xperia XZ1, Sony has improved on various department and it works better than its predecessors. The phone comes with a compact look and the camera does a decent job as well. However, the company is still stuck with an older design language and misses key trends like bezel-less display and improved design, which are some prominent trends of 2017.

It looks like Sony has improved a lot in terms of offerings, the overall package is undeniable, it replicates most things from the Xperia XZ Premium itself and the pricing just fits the flagship territory. Sony can still pop-up the bezel-less type design and an 18:9 display aspect ratio in their next generation Xperia smartphones.

The Sony Xperia XZ1 may look like a little dated compared to other flagship devices in the market, but its performance is definitely on par. It’s got enough oomph for heavier users and, while it doesn’t rock an edge-to-edge display, it offers a great multimedia experience. The build quality is awesome and you can worry a little less about your screen shattering if you happen to accidentally drop the device. While overall, we think that Sony Xperia XZ1 is a pretty solid device, but it’s up against some really serious competition now that other brands have priced their offerings more aggressively.

All of which is to say, dear reader, please understand that if you were to use Sony’s Xperia XZ1, you would most likely be completely satisfied by your experience. However, if you actually are in the market for a premium, flagship Android smartphone, the Xperia XZ1 almost definitely isn’t for you.

Sony is playing it safe with the release of the Xperia XZ1. It sports the same old design and feels like a toned-down version of the Xperia XZ Premium. However, it was able to deliver the essentials that most people are looking for in a flagship smartphone – premium build, water and dust-resistant body, good display, amazing cameras, great performance, and cool imaging features. It’s a bit pricey though at Php39,990, and at that asking price, some might be compelled to go for other models with a better design, higher display resolution, larger screen, or bigger batteries. But if the pros mentioned above is what you’re looking for, the Xperia XZ1 won’t disappoint.

There's no single flaw in the Sony Xperia XZ1 and while it has some decent specs including good audio features and a good camera, it struggles to stand out in a busy market. Phones like the Galaxy S8 and LG G6 make this newer phone look dated and devices like the OnePlus 5 are better at a lower price point.

The Sony Xperia XZ1 will cost you a shade under R10k, depending on the retailer, which is a good price in the current market for a flagship smartphone. No, it does not feature any of the newer design elements in the mobile industry, such as longer displays and curved screens, but it is a well equipped piece of hardware.

The XZ1 hardly comes close to competing with the competition. Super slow motion is a nice feature but regular crashes of multiple apps means the handset will be more of a frustration than anything else. The battery is fine but hardly enough to pull the XZ1 up to fighting form.

Well, there is no denying the fact that the Xperia XZ1 is the best smartphone Sony has made to date. It may not have a crazy 4K display like the Xperia XZ Premium, but it comes with fast and fluid software, a sleek and svelte design, stellar cameras and a decent, if not class leading display. The fact that it is priced reasonably and realistically at Rs 45,000 really helps the phones case.

Sony tried really hard to make the Xperia XZ1 standout from the crowd and its performance is generally good. It’s a well-made phone that feels good in the hand and has a good camera, if not the best, with long battery. As we mentioned in the beginning, the Xperia XZ1 is a solid option but it’s hard to recommend the phone even at this price range. If it had launched last year, we would have recommended the phone. With the coming of bezel-less and dual camera smartphones, our perspective of seeing a high-end device has completely changed. I would rather recommend you to get the LG G6 for Rs 33,990. It’s a great phone for the price.

The Sony Xperia XZ1 is cheap by Sony’s standards. It also has some impressive technologies built inside, and is a fast smartphone. It just doesn’t feel like a phone that belongs in 2017. It can neither match up to flagship phones of today, nor does it make a good argument against “value” phones like the OnePlus 5. Android Oreo out of the box is really the only reason to buy this phone.

The Sony Xperia XZ1 comes with a price tag of Rs 44,990. The smartphone packs an impressive design and all the high-end specifications which a flagship should have. It has the latest processor and operating system but it still lacks some of the things. For instance, it doesn't come with a dual rear camera setup and the battery capacity is also quite less when compared to its competitors. If you are a Sony fan then you can definitely go for the Xperia XZ1. However, those looking for alternatives can consider buying the OnePlus 5 or the recently launched Nokia 8.

Of course, if a 4.6-inch display is too small to your liking, then the XZ1 Compact doesn't stand a chance. If you’re not a size queen, the XZ1 Compact is easily Sony’s most ambitious attempt thus far – after all, it’s not about the size, but how you use it. If you like small flagship phones with modern specs and features, it’s your best bet.

It may not be the greatest display in the world, but it’s still nice to have smaller phones with HDR capable screens that deliver excellent video viewing on supported platforms; support that extends to the most important players on the field too. US buyers will likely not be happy with the lack of fingerprint scanning once again though, and while the price is certainly reasonable for what you get at this point in 2017, it’s extremely difficult to recommend this to anyone in the US simply because of that massive security oversight. Buyers in Europe and elsewhere worldwide should seriously consider the phone as a viable alternative to the rest of the 2017 flagship pack though, as it’s one of the most solid experiences one can buy.

Sony doesn't really need to fight Samsung or Apple. It just needs a niche. Tying the XZ1 lineup to the current trend toward 3D printing and scanning might be just that. Since we are getting into some comparisons here, we should note that the XZ1 is intended as a direct descendant to the original XZ, even though its specs sheet and camera setup put it a lot closer to the XZ Premium. On certain markets, the XZs fits in somewhere in this comparison as well, but regardless, the main parallel should be between the XZ and the XZ1.

Sony has officially taken the wraps off of two new phones here in IFA, Berlin.
