The TCL 50 is the newest 5G smartphone from TCL that was designed to impress and it has certainly achieved that. It not only has one of the best designs but also slays the competition in excellent 5G reception. The same goes for the performance as well and 5G’s lower latency certainly elevates the multiplayer gaming experience in PUBG and CODm. The display is also excellent for the price tag and the camera was more than decent. The battery is so good that it will keep your gaming sessions for longer hours. On top of that, the smartphone has resistance against dust and water splashes, which is a good thing. That means it will be better protected against light rain. The list of pros just keeps on going. Considering all that you get with this smartphone, that price seems like a steal deal.

TCL 50 XL Nxtpaper’s key selling point would be the Nxtpaper technology integration. With this, the display is reflection-resistant and reduces screen glare issues. Apart from the display powers, the phone is just another mid-range phone. It has a bunch of mismatched components that lead to an incomplete product. The device might not be the best choice for camera usage. But still, the phone shines when it comes to battery life. Yet, the performance level is mediocre. From this, you might get an idea that this phone is average in almost every aspect. However, we still consider the TCL 50 XL Nxtpaper as one of the best options released among the TCL 50-series. Instead, consider getting the Motorola Moto G Power (2024) edition will be a better deal with clean UI and wireless charging support. Nonetheless, we would recommend you go through other alternatives and make every buck worth it.

The TCL 50 XL 5G features a large 6.78-inch 120Hz display, 6GB of RAM, and a 5,010mAh battery, making it a strong contender in the budget segment. It runs on the MediaTek Dimensity 6100 Plus chipset and Android 14 out of the box.

At a price of $160, it handles itself nicely and not a snail as far as speed. It’s a cool device for that kid’s first phone or perhaps an older family member that wants to take pictures, make a call, or read the latest news.

For the price, the TCL 50 XL 5G is not a terrible phone (that honor goes to the Moto G 2024), but it’s also not amazing. It definitely has a unique design with the textured material on the rear and a distinctive sheen that I don’t typically see on smartphones, let alone one at this price. The display isn’t too shabby for an LCD, as colors are bright and vivid, with text being sharp and crisp. NXTVISION’s visual enhancements are also a nice bonus. The 120Hz refresh rate does provide smooth scrolling, but the midrange chipset does have a little bit of stutter every now and then. It’s also nice to see a phone that still has a 3.5mm headphone jack and expandable storage.

The TCL 50 XL offers a large screen and plenty of basic features like a microSD card slot and a 3.5mm headphone jack at an affordable price. But its cameras produce poor still images, the screen is somewhat dim, and battery life falls short of competitors. You're better off spending $40 more on the Galaxy A15 5G, which takes better photos, feels more manageable in hand, and is promised many years of software updates, making it our Editors' Choice winner in this price range.

TCL deserves recognition for cramming so many features from pricier devices into the $160 50 XL 5G. This includes its 1080p-resolution 120Hz screen, NFC for contactless payments, and 128GB of storage and 6GB of RAM for multitasking. It's too bad that its T-Mobile exclusivity will severely limit its audience. On the bright side, if you picked up the phone while moving to Metro by T-Mobile, it's likely that the phone would be free through the carrier's signup offer. And while I am normally not thrilled with a phone that gets only two years of security updates, at this lower price it's easier to stomach as long as you know to move onto a new device after its security updates end. If you can live with the two-year lifespan, the TCL 50 XL 5G provides a lot of value. But if you hope to use the phone for three years or longer, you should check into what Motorola offers with its Moto G line or Samsung's Galaxy A phones, which will get more years of security updates.

The TCL 50 Pro Nxtpaper 5G is one of the most interesting budget phones and is worth consideration as long as you get your head around what the “paper-like” screen actually is. This isn’t an Amazon Kindle replacement, it’s just a whole lot better at looking like one that other phones. A matt screen finish is the most substantive display feature here. It obliterates reflections, if not ambient light’s effect on the readability of the screen. For a true phone-shaped e-reader, check out the Boox Palma 2 (not a phone) or Hisense A5. The TCL 50 Pro Nxtpaper 5G is going to be much more fun to use as a phone, though, proving that sometimes it’s OK to have dedicated one-task devices.

Tradeshows are, and will continue to be this combination of the mess I like to avoid, and yet the kind of mess that makes you and I the nerds that we are. It's about as tiring as it is fun, and probably the best example of it is IFA, which I will refuse to call out in German because, well, I speak none. It's been 100 years of a tradeshow that's mostly famous for home appliances today, but which was known before by being inaugurated once by Albert Einstein, and because later it became Samsung's launch pad for years of Galaxy Notes and Wearables. It's hard for me to deny how much I love Berlin, how much I loved this year's show, and also the products that caught my eye most.

The TCL 50 Pro NxtPaper and 50 NxtPaper are two fantastic smartphones. They do not cost a lot unless you buy the Pro model, which only has a handful of extra features that are not worth paying double for. Besides, the two smartphones are almost identical, so they will look and perform the same most of the time. The design and the display of the two phones are quite decent. The chipset is also great, and it can run many games smoothly. Even the camera, battery, and charging performances are also quite good. Considering all the features of the TCL 50 NxtPaper, the pricing is acceptable, but the same cannot be said for the TCL 50 Pro NxtPaper. You should ignore the Pro variant. If you want an alternative smartphone, you can look at the Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro, which not only has better features but also costs less. However, the final decision is up to you, so it is better to choose a smartphone based on your requirements and needs.

TCL will sell the device for €299 (roughly $450 CAD), which seems excellent. But, I’d have to put this handset through its paces to say whether it’s worth that price point. However, I do not doubt that this handset would be great for people who love reading and don’t want or need the fanciest devices. Typically, I review premium devices, the best of the best, but seeing more affordable handsets with cool features/gimmicks on the market is always nice.
