And today, we'd like to give you an overview of the phone's powerful camera capabilities.

Were my initial expectations for the Xiaomi 15 Ultra too high? I think so. I was so looking forward to the phone’s camera, the issues I noticed clouded my early judgement. While these problems remain, by testing the camera more I found what I thought was missing — character, and an almost indefinable magic. The Xiaomi 15 Ultra’s camera is a high performance, supremely capable, and superbly usable every day partner, but to really see what it can do, you simply have to go out and push both it’s, and your own ability. Very few camera phones reward you for doing this, but the Xiaomi 15 Ultra adores it. However, to get to this point, you have to accept the device’s idiosyncrasies.

As is the case with all global variants of phones (read: ones that aren't officially sold in the US), you'll have to export the Xiaomi 15 Ultra to use one. It currently retails for 1499 EUR, roughly $1,555 USD. That's not counting the impending upcharges due to recent US tariffs. So if you want one of the best phones on the market, you'll have to pay to play. Fortunately, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra is one of the easier phones for me to recommend to power users and tech enthusiasts, thanks to its capable camera system and onslaught of specs. At this point, I might even go about the rest of my MWC week using just the phone to capture product shots and videos instead of my bulkier Sony camera.

Yes, but only if you’re willing to spend some money. This is an expensive phone at north of $1,600 after converting from Euros. It won’t be hard to import from the U.K. or Europe, where the 15 Ultra has wide availability, but throw in the $200 Photography Kit, and it becomes an even pricier proposition.

As the value of cameras has increased in phones, various makers have gone about their efforts in differing ways. The Xiaomi 15 Ultra makes a no-compromise stance on its camera quality by adopting huge sensors, Leica-approved lens quality, and a significant range of focal lengths in its arrangement. For photo aficionados looking for classic quality, it's an untouchable offering. Sure, you've got to consolidate the fact it's squeezed into a giant camera enclosure, that it costs a fair packet too, and for true camera-like use you'll want to add the Xiaomi 15 Ultra Photography Kit 'Legend Edition' too. But this just adds yet another unique factor for this handset, making it even more impressive – and even more niche.

The Xiaomi 15 Ultra is an excellent camera phone. At its price, we need to nitpick, and the wide camera missing out on a variable aperture, downgraded ultra-wide camera, and occasional photo processing issues hold it back from perfection. Nevertheless, anyone who wants exceptional zoom, a 1-inch main sensor, an excellent camera grip, and Leica’s classical image tuning would be well served with Xiaomi’s latest Ultra flagship.

If you buy the Xiaomi 15 Ultra, you should also treat yourself to the classically styled Xiaomi 15 Ultra Photography Kit Legend Edition which is a treat for photography enthusiasts. Inspired by the timeless design of cameras, it features a signature red decorative ring, a custom designed UI under camera's Fastshot mode, detachable thumb support and shutter buttons, a multi-functional 67mm filter adapter ring and an integrated 2000mAh power pack for extending your phone’s battery life.

The Xiaomi 15 Ultra delivered a strong performance for an ultra-premium device providing a balanced experience among all technical attributes, particularly in touch responsiveness. Apart from the occasional unintended touches, the device demonstrated excellent precision, smoothness, and responsiveness. The 15 Ultra’s readability performance showed significant improvement over the 14 Ultra, mainly because of a much higher peak brightness, which was measured at 3,065 nits compared with the 14 Ultra’s 1,356 nits. As of February 2025, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra is the brightest device tested in the database. However, its contrast under sunlight was not better managed than that of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, and the screen showed much fewer details when compared with the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra.

If my drastic shift in tone between sections didn’t make it clear, the software offering is by far my biggest issue with the Xiaomi 15 Ultra. Everything else looks crisp and polished, while the software continues to languish with its cluttered design and baffling decisions. Equally, with Honor stepping up alongside Samsung and Google to offer seven years of software support, Xiaomi is officially falling behind. Otherwise, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra made a very strong first impression on me.

The Xiaomi Ultra 15 delivered a very good performance in the DXOMARK Camera tests, achieving the best results of a Xiaomi device to date. The new flagship comes with impressive imaging specs, including a total of four image sensors, with pixel counts from 50MP to a whopping 200MP, photo and video HDR modes, as well as a host of other features and modes. In terms of camera hardware, the main improvements over the predecessor are the pixel count on the long tele camera (now 200MP sensor) and the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. In our photo tests, overall image quality was excellent, with a wide dynamic range, low noise and nice colors. However, the Xiaomi’s main camera lagged behind the best devices in some areas.

The Xiaomi 15 Ultra is a great Android phone. It has very few shortcomings, namely a slightly buggy interface and battery life that could have been slightly better. However, that's where most of the criticism ends, as the rest of the package is quite intriguing and boasts plenty of strengths. The Xiaomi 15 Ultra has a really capable camera package, which excels in both still photography and video-recording, but it also has excellent performance, an interesting design with intriguing accessories, and finally, a lovely screen that's one of the brightest we've measured so far. However, with a starting price of EUR1,500, it doesn't come cheap, and it might be argued that you might find better value with a Galaxy S25 Ultra.

If you're planning to get the Xiaomi 15 Ultra for photography, be sure to also pick up the S$199 Photography Kit Legend Edition, which is similar to last year's version, except now it has an optional thumb rest you can add. You can also add CPL or ND filters to the phone, letting you do more creative shots. For those pre-ordering the Ultra from March 3 to 23 in Singapore, you can get the Photography Kit Legend Edition bundled and a Redmi Pad SE. At S$1,699 for the 512GB and S$1,849 for the 1TB model, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra is still a great photography phone with flagship features. But I think I much prefer the Xiaomi 14 Ultra with its variable aperture that enables more exceptional shots. I'm also not a fan of what appears to be AI-generated zoomed-in shots. Get from Shopee or Lazada.

Now, the fun part comes - cameras! It has a four-camera setup with a 50-megapixel primary sensor, a 200-megapixel telephoto sensor, a 50-megapixel floating telephoto sensor, and a 50-megapixel ultra-wide sensor. Of course, the 15 Ultra has a regular suite of Leica styles that enhance the overall experience. This one also gets the 1-inch sensor and f/1.63 aperture. There's a 32-megapixel selfie camera. In my limited time with the device, the 15 Ultra looks like a fantastic successor to the 14 Ultra in terms of camera upgrades. But I will be able to break it down more in my review. It also runs on HyperOS 2, based on Android 15. It has a suite of AI features onboard, which I will test and detail in my review, so stay tuned.

Gone is the variable aperture camera setup, although this blower can still capture stunning portraits in all kinds of light. As long as your subject doesn't move too much. The Xiaomi 15 Ultra is just as beefy as any other flagship Android, with the Snapdragon 8 Elite running things. So gamers will be happy enough, whether you play Genshin, Wuthering Waves or whatever. The Xiaomi 15 Ultra also serves up a bigger battery, if not as big as the OnePlus 13, OPPO Find X8 Pro etc. Life is good enough to keep you going all day, even with a fair bit of video chat, gaming etc. And you can recharge in no time thanks to the super-fast charge speeds.

The Xiaomi 15 Ultra is one of, if not the best, camera phone available in 2025 – even if it does come at quite a premium at £1299. The camera setup has no notable weaknesses, with a 1-inch backed primary camera, capable telephoto and periscope lenses and a solid ultrawide to complete the experience. Paired with an intuitively designed camera app and plenty of shooting modes, it’s almost effortless to capture a stunning image with the 15 Ultra.

Don’t let the software nonsense detract from the phone’s strengths. With HyperOS onboard (based on Android 15), there’s a ton of the usual bloat and overengineered apps to contend with anyway, which is just part and parcel of the Xiaomi experience, even after moving on from MIUI. In any case, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra remains a showcase for some of the best hardware money can buy, particularly in the camera department. Xiaomi’s software promise of four years of OS and six years of security updates is good too.

The Xiaomi 15 Ultra pushes the boundaries of what a flagship phone can offer. With its stunning display, versatile camera system, and premium build quality, it provides an all-encompassing experience that caters to demanding users. While it may not match the long-term software support of Google or Samsung, its blend of performance, design, and camera technology positions it as an attractive choice for those looking for a high-performance device. If you’re willing to invest in a cutting-edge smartphone, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra is a solid contender that doesn’t disappoint.

While we wouldn’t recommend getting the Xiaomi 15 Ultra at full price if you have the previous model, the number of upgrades over the Xiaomi 13 Ultra, and basically every other Xiaomi model, makes the new Ultra an easy recommendation, with the usual caveats when it comes to the Chinese brand. Software support is not as long as similarly-priced Samsung or Google phones, and there were at least 10 third-party apps pre-installed (more if you don’t opt out in a post-setup step). On the other hand, performance was theoretically higher than on the rival Galaxy S25 Ultra we tested, even if not noticeable. And the rest of the phone keeps this tone of a mixture of highs and lows.

The best and worst things about the 15 Ultra come down to its camera. I think the one thing most likely to put anyone off buying this phone — price aside — is that the lens module is a bit of an eyesore. It’s the first thing anyone I’ve seen in the past week has noticed about the phone, and not in a good way. But then you start using the camera, and you get it. Yes, it’s ugly. But there was probably no other way to make it this damn good.

I've been using the Xiaomi 15 Ultra for a month by the time I finished the final edit to this video. I have a lot of thoughts, but the biggest one: yes, this phone dethrones the Vivo X200 Pro/X100 Ultra as the new best camera phone. The new 200-megapixel Periscope sensor with 1/1.4-inch sensor, along with a very capable 3X 70mm, and an excellent main camera pushes this ahead of the pack.

Spend any length of time with the Xiaomi 15 Ultra and you can’t help but fall for its fantastic photos. No other phone can match its epic sensor selection and characterful image processing, while the optional photography kit makes it the obvious choice for anyone who operates in focal lengths and exposure values. True, this isn’t a size zero smartphone – but it otherwise looks the part, and doesn’t really disappoint anywhere else. It has power and impactful display you’d expect of a 2025 flagship, while battery life has improved just enough over last year to edge ahead of big-name rivals like the Pixel 9 Pro XL and Galaxy S25 Ultra. It narrowly undercuts them on price when speccing the same amount of storage, too. There’s no need to spend quite so much if you’re after more of an all-rounder – most of which are still perfectly capable of taking great pics in most conditions – but none blur the lines between phone and compact camera quite like this.

Overall the Xiaomi 15 Ultra is a great phone with all the qualities you’d expect from a premium-priced smartphone. The camera quality is excellent all round, and doesn’t fall into the trap of utilizing too much AI or post-image processing in a way that spoils the final image. Battery life is similarly good, and you shouldn’t have issues running out of power in the middle of your normal day. The thing I like the most about the Xiaomi 15 Ultra is the design of the SIlver Chrome edition. I’ve made no secret of my dislike for large camera bumps on phones, so the fact Xiaomi has adopted that shape to emphasize the retro camera design is pretty marvelous. I hope that’s a trend that continues, especially if Xiaomi continues its partnership with Leica in the future. There are some issues I have with the 15 Ultra, though.

Understandably, people can be a bit reluctant to move away from more familiar brands, such as Samsung, Apple or even Google, but in terms of the photography, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra is pretty much the best you can get – particularly because of its one-inch type sensor, something we just don’t generally see on smartphones. As well as the excellent main sensor, the four Leica lenses do a great job across a range of different scenarios making it well-suited to general photography, macro, portraits, low light, video and probably more besides. That said, the 15 Ultra isn’t a huge revolution from the 14 Ultra. If you’ve already got last year’s model, there’s probably not quite enough here to tempt you to upgrade – and it’s a slight disappointment that you can no longer adjust the aperture of the lens sitting in front of that large, one-inch sensor.

Xiaomi is bringing sizeable upgrades to the 15 Ultra; there's a new 200MP telephoto camera that takes amazing photos, a bigger 5410mAh battery that lasts over a day, and the latest hardware currently available. There's still a 1-inch sensor at the back, and it continues to take breathtaking photos most of the time. Combine that with a brighter AMOLED panel and better software optimization, and the 15 Ultra is a delight to use. There are issues with overheating at times and the camera being inconsistent with HDR imagery, but on the whole, the 15 Ultra is without a doubt one of the best phones I used in 2025.

The Xiaomi 15 Ultra didn't exactly surprise us - for another generation it's one of our favorite cameraphones. And when you start trying to put it into context, it may very well emerge as the uncontested number one for photography this year. The pairing of two telephotos with different strengths beats having just one telephoto, transformative as it may be (we're looking at you, vivos). Meanwhile, the 1-inch type main camera becomes an unexpected differentiator in a year when no one else seems to want to use this type of sensor, much less in a globally available model. So yeah, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra seems like an easy recommendation for the photography buffs among you, and the new and improved accessory kit does make it an even sweeter package (if you spend the extra cash, that is). Sure, selfies aren't exactly to our liking, and the video processing could use some fine tuning.

The Xiaomi 15 Ultra is an ambitious flagship that delivers on almost every front. It boasts top-tier performance, a stunning display, and a great battery life — coupled with one of the best camera systems out there right now. While the software experience still feels a bit dated, and the camera consistency could use some refinement, these are minor complaints in the grand scheme of things. If you’re looking for a powerhouse Android phone that pushes boundaries, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra is an excellent choice. Of course, if you want it, you’ll have to live in a location where it’s available, and it’s not coming to the U.S.
