Most of the notebooks on the market that cost less than 3,000 yuan rely on outdated processors, which unfortunately leads to poor power efficiency. When using these older notebooks to run demanding applications such as Tencent Video, users will often experience a significant increase in heat output. However, this problem is not present in the XiaoMI Book 12.4 2-in-1 tablet. Thanks to its Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 processor, the XiaoMI Book 12.4 2-in-1 boasts a low-power ARM architecture that not only reduces heat generation but also enhances battery life. Even when playing 4K high-definition videos on station B, this tablet can last for up to 10 hours of continuous use. Even with heavy usage, it can still be charged once a day. When it comes to application compatibility, the XiaoMI Book 12.4 2-in-1 can run common software such as QQ, WeChat, Office, WPS, and Tencent Meeting with ease. It even supports popular games such as LOL, although the frame rate may be slightly lower (around 34FPS). While the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 processor can support some 64-bit X86 applications, it is unfortunate that it cannot run larger programs such as those in the Adobe family or other large-scale 64-bit programs. It is hoped that Microsoft will address these compatibility issues in the future. For those looking for a notebook for online classes, online videos, and daily office work, the XiaoMI Book 12.4 2-in-1 tablet is an excellent option. Not only is it thin and light, with a thickness of less than 9mm and a net weight of less than 700g, but it also supports ten-point touch. Furthermore, its screen boasts an impressive 500nit brightness, 100% DCI-P3 color gamut, and 1500:1 contrast ratio. It is hard to find a notebook with such features, especially considering its budget-friendly price of less than 3,000 yuan. In fact, even notebooks that cost 5,000 yuan may not have a screen as advanced as this one, and the 8,000-yuan Surface Pro X may not even offer this level of screen quality.

The Xiaomi Book S is a well-built and versatile Windows 2-in-1 with a lovely display and an attractive price tag. Expandable microSD card storage, a great keyboard cover, an excellent webcam and speedy charging also add to its appeal. Unfortunately, the processing power just isn't sufficient for our daily needs, and that will likely be the case for many users. If you need Windows 11 and are only looking to achieve basic tasks, then this could be a decent option. However, we think most people would be better served by an Android or iOS tablet, or a traditional Windows laptop.

The Xiaomi Book S is a 2-in-1 laptop with a lot of potential. The sleek design and optional keyboard make it easy to use, but the performance underwhelms during productivity tasks and it doesn’t work well as a standalone tablet, which makes it hard to recommend.

We enjoyed our time with the Xiaomi Book S: it's a well-built and well-designed 2-in-1 that can flip between tablet and laptop-alike with ease. The screen is a definite highlight, and of course you've got all the versatility of Windows 11 to call upon – it's a device that can switch from movie watching and social media checking to essay writing and email sending without any trouble at all. It's not all good news though – the battery life and the performance levels are pretty average. What's more, while the price is competitive, if you're adding the keyboard and the stylus on top then you're looking at an outlay of £819 in total. That's not exactly cheap. When you're weighing up whether or not the Xiaomi Book S is for you, give careful consideration to what else is around and what exactly you want the device to do: if you're doing mostly media consumption, social media and web browsing then there are a lot of cheap Android tablets and iPads around, which can also be equipped with keyboard attachments for easier typing. On the other hand, there are Windows tablets around that give you better battery life and more power too. Where this and other 2-in-1s devices excel is in their flexibility of course, so if that's what's important to you then we think you're going to find the Xiaomi Book S appealing.

The Xiaomi Book S 12.4 is a good option for anyone seeking a 2-in-1 tablet that doesn’t cost too much but still offers a wide gamut of functionality. It does nearly everything its more expensive rivals such as the Surface Pro 8 and Huawei MateBook E do, while also saving the user at least a couple of hundred pounds (or euros), depending on which add-ons they purchase. Despite using an LCD panel and missing a faster refresh rate, its 12.35in display is big and bright enough to provide an enjoyable viewing experience, while being more than adequate for work purposes. Its performance is also more than sufficient for most day-to-day purposes but nothing too demanding. It’s more of a mixed bag with battery life, because while the Book S recharges quickly, it can lose power with almost as much speed. Using it in tandem with the keyboard and Xiaomi Smart Pen can sap its juices easily while using it as a work device will necessitate having it plugged in (unless you want it to conk out on you by the afternoon).

The Xiaomi Book S 12.4-inch is compact and well made. The keyboard is comfortable to use (although its angle can't be raised) and the screen offers plenty of brightness. The 1080p webcam is good, and there's a MicroSD card slot for storage expansion. Windows S mode is installed out of the box, but a one-way trip out of this restrictive mode is possible for free (there's no way back to S mode afterwards, though). Downsides include ageing Gorilla Glass 3 screen protection, a chipset offering modest performance, the lack of an on-board housing for the stylus, a shortage of ports and connectors, and no support for mobile broadband. The Xiaomi Book S 12.4 may suit undemanding users, but the small screen and basic specifications mean it's not sufficiently powerful to be your main work device.

All things considered, the Xiaomi Book S 12.4in isn’t a bad machine for the money. If you want a 2-in-1 detachable like a Surface Pro X (£1,069) but can’t afford the price, it’s a decent option. The screen is sharp and colour rich, battery life is excellent and although performance isn’t anything special, it’ll be fine for basic tasks. If you’re desperate for a stylus-compatible tablet, however, I’d recommend you opt for an iPad (£459) instead as the Apple Pencil works really well. And, if you need a tool for work, I’d advise you to choose a proper laptop. The Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 2 (From £529) is the perfect place to start and the Acer Swift 3 SF314-511 is even better, although it is a little more expensive at around £700.
