If you don’t mind the software ‘quirks’ and are fine with ‘okay’ images and want something flashy and sexy and outrageously beautiful to look at with more performance than you can shake a stick at, then the Red Magic 5G is going to light up your life.

But in the otherwise relentless dumpster fire that is 2020, there is one bright point: some manufacturers are actually having fun with their hardware again. Earlier in the year Nubia unveiled its RedMagic 5G gaming phone, a device I photographed for the Instagram channel because it sported the most striking paint job I’ve seen in a very long time. And today, that same phone is back in the studio with a new transparent backplate that showcases its halo feature: a 15,000 rpm cooling fan. It's not destined for US shores and doesn't have software complete enough for this market to make a full review possible – but that doesn't mean we can't have a little fun. Join me for an up-close look at my first clear phone in years: the RedMagic 5G Transparent Edition.

Those of you considering the RedMagic 5G as a cheaper alternative to the current crop of Snapdragon 865-equipped 5G flagships might want to think twice. Besides the disappointing camera, questionable software, and uncertain updates, this handset is bulky and definitely not water or dust resistant -- fan grilles and all. Plus, if you’re abroad, you already have a roster of affordable 5G flagships to choose from. Yes, the RedMagic 5G is a speed demon, but are you willing to sacrifice usability for specs and performance? That's the all-important question only you can answer.

The Nubia Red Magic 5G is far from being the perfect everyday smartphone. There are devices with much better cameras, software, and battery life, but there are few smartphones out there that live up to their promises. The Red Magic 5G is a gaming-first smartphone that promises best-in-class performance and that’s exactly what it delivers. If all you want is a powerful smartphone that can deliver an impeccable gaming experience, this is the phone you’ve been waiting for.

The Red Magic 5G is a top-tier gaming phone with the world’s first 144Hz refresh rate display. Only a handful of games can make the most of that tech, but the list will expand over the next year, making this phone fully future-proof. You’re also getting top-end specs at a mid-range price, but the software lets it down.

The Red Magic 5G probably doesn't have mainstream appeal, but a buttery smooth 144Hz display and stellar performance make it one of the very best gaming phones you can buy.

Is the RedMagic 5G smartphone worth the amount of cash you’ll pay for it here in the summer of 2020? It really depends on what your values are. If you absolutely, positively MUST have a smartphone with a 144Hz image refresh rate, this is currently your best bet. You could also look into the iQoo Z1 5G, but we’ve got no hand-on experience with that brand whatsoever, so cannot attest to quality.

nubia's RedMagic phones have always left a great impression on me due to their hardware, and this one is no different. It retains most of what made the previous phones unique, with the active cooling system, the RGB light strip, high refresh rate, and stereo speakers. I would also say the transition to a glass and metal sandwich ends up being good for the phone, as it feels more sturdy than the previous models, and I actually prefer the new implementation of the RGB lighting. The camera is also good enough for me, and the new sensors do add some versatility.

Put simply, the Red Magic 5G is one of the very best gaming phones you can buy. The headlining 144Hz display offers a buttery smooth experience like never before, while the speaker system is a contender for best-in-class. Even the cameras have seen a nice upgrade over last year’s 3S. The design and software might prevent it from having mainstream appeal, but for mobile gamers there are few better options.

All that considered, we'd say the Nubia RedMagic 5G ends up with more in the positives column than the negatives column. It definitely has its problems – which you should be aware of before you buy it – but it brings with it a whole load of mobile power and gaming goodness for an eye-catching price.

Not all gaming phones are created equal... especially on the inside. This Brand new RedMagic 5G gaming phone has a FAN inside. Making it one of the coolest looking phones weve taken apart in awhile. This little motorized hurricane sucks in air from one side to cool the processor (And other random mother board chips) And spits the hot air out the other side of the phone. Today we are going to take apart the Red Magic 5G and see what makes it work from the inside. We'll take a look at the Turbo Cooling fan inside of the Android smartphone, and see if the RedMagic 5g can withstand being taken apart and reassembled. And yes. The fan indeed sucks air in through one side and out the other.

The Red Magic 5G is all about gaming. And on that front it's got all the goods for success: top-drawer processing, great cooling, long-lasting battery life, a customisable gaming space, 144Hz display, shoulder triggers and optional additional controllers.

The Red Magic 5G android smartphone is one of the only phones in existence with an internal cooling fan. Just like a desktop computer, this fan kicks on when the phone is under load, like during an intense game, or tinder swiping real fast. You know how it is. Its time to see if this internal fan makes the phone weaker at all.

While the Red Magic 5G features a lot of power for the price, it’s hard to recommend for all but the most serious gamers. Simply put, it doesn’t offer extensive band support for any US carrier, and 5G will never be an option for most US users. While there isn't a direct alternative with all of the bells and whistles for gamers, the OnePlus 8 features similar hardware, more extensive 5G support, and a better camera for a similar price. And if you’re willing to spend more, the LG V60 ThinQ 5G offers sub-6GHz support for all carriers (and mmWave support on Verizon), as well as solid gaming features including dedicated buttons on its optional second display.

One of the biggest advantages of the Red Magic 5G over the alternatives is the 144Hz display. So far there's no other phone on the market that can achieve this level of smoothness. Hardcore gamers will probably spot the difference between the Red Magic 5G and the second-best option out there - 120Hz. On the other hand, aside from the OS animations and the standard non-gaming apps, there aren't many places where you can show off your 144Hz screen. There's only one game that supports 144fps and only a few that go beyond 60Hz.
