As we said at the beginning of the review, our unit was an early engineering sample from Acer, and we were not able to perform any performance and battery tests. On the other hand, we can definitely tell you that Acer Predator Helios 300 (PH315-55)’s IPS panel has a Full HD resolution, good contrast ratio, and comfortable viewing angles. It covers 100% of the sRGB color gamut, which results in a pretty attractive image, which is also rather accurate with our Gaming and Web design profile. Undoubtedly, the best feature for gamers is the 165Hz refresh rate, which is paired with quick pixel response times. In addition to that, you get a laptop with a huge feature pack. It has optional G-Sync support, liquid metal on the CPU die, optional Per-key RGB backlight, and more. The I/O is fantastic and it includes a Thunderbolt 4 connector. Once more, it lacks an SD card reader, which we’ve listed as Helios 300 (PH317-56)‘s only disadvantage – this is the 17-inch version of this laptop. Ultimately, the high TGPs of the graphics cards and the powerful processor options make the laptop an incredible piece of machinery.

The Predator Helios 300 2022 generation is a competitive gaming device in the mid-tier sector, dramatically improving performance over prior models. In the recent update, Acer increased the power settings and improved the thermal module to cope with them. The laptop is no longer as cold as it once was, but with up to 50 per cent quicker CPU loads and 30 per cent faster GPU loads, I can live with the components operating at greater temperatures and the fans operating at a higher volume. Furthermore, the Quiet profile tackles both of these issues while reducing previous generations’ capabilities. Aside from the specs, the 2022 Helios 300 includes a redesigned screen, one of the excellent keyboards on the market, and a substantial collection of connectors. With the addition of a 90 Wh battery and minor design and ergonomic refinements, this should be on your radar in the coming months. However, Acer has done little to improve the sound quality of this series, so you’ll need to utilise headphones. They’ll also help to muffle the fan sounds.

Acer’s latest Predator Helios 300 is an attractive choice for gamers who want a mid-range gaming laptop that can handle the latest titles, and even achieve 30 frames-per-second (or better) with ray tracing on. The model I tested, which retails for $2,099.99, can meet or beat more expensive competitors like the Alienware R15 and Razer Blade 15. Gamers must compromise on build quality and portability to snag the laptop’s alluring performance. The Predator Helios 300 is heavier and thicker than an Alienware R15 or Razer Blade 15, and it doesn’t last as long on a charge. It also feels and looks less premium despite Acer’s minor design refresh. The Predator Helios 300 isn’t spectacular, but it’s respectable and well worth its price. Gamers who rarely travel with their laptop or don’t mind its bulky frame will look past the laptop’s limited portability and appreciate its top-notch performance.

The Acer Predator Helios 300 (2022) is exactly the kind of outstanding performance that anyone could hope for in a gaming laptop, with phenomenal frame rates and multitasking capabilities, matched to a gorgeous QHD display at 240Hz. All that power comes at the expense of an almost nonexistent battery life, however, and the best configurations get expensive fast.

The 2022 Predator Helios 300 is once more a competitive performance/gaming notebook in the mid-tier segment. Acer updated the design, the screen options, the inputs, and the ports, added a 90 Wh battery and a beefed-up thermal module, as well as significantly more powerful specs than on the previous generations. As a result, this laptop is more competent in demanding loads and games, and lasts for longer with daily use on battery. At the same time, the 2022 Helios 300 runs warmer and noisier, still lacks in audio quality, and is no longer as competitively priced as it used to be.

If you told me that I’d be touching a 3D gaming laptop in 2022, I would have laughed in your face and I mean a mighty hard guffaw. But yet, almost 11 years since my last 3D system here comes Acer making me rethink what I thought was only a fad. The Acer Predator Helios 300 SpatialLabs Edition laptop delivers powerful performance with a gorgeous display that seamlessly transitions from 4K to a glasses-free 1080p stereoscopic 3D experience. 3D gaming is smooth and definitely adds noticeable depth to compatible titles. Now the trick is, convincing gamers that this is worth investing in and unlike previous attempts at 3D gaming, this is more than just a flashy gimmick to the tune of $3,399. I think Acer is making a pretty good case as it has over 50 titles, the majority of them AAA, ready to play out the gate. It’s going to be on Acer to keep the stream of games coming to make this a worthwhile investment. But gamers looking for a non-VR method to achieve an immersive gaming experience, the Acer Predator Helios 300 SpatialLabs Edition is the way to go.

Acer Predator Helios 300 is a gaming laptop with an attractive design with a metal body, excellent workmanship, high performance (which depends on the specific configuration and, of course, price). We have a reasonable selection of ports, a comfortable keyboard and a screen matrix that is more than decent for this price range. It is impossible not to note the 144 Hz screen refresh (fans of shooters and MOBA will like it), high-quality backlighting and a high level of sRGB display. Helios 300 also has a very comfortable keyboard with widely customizable multi-colored backlighting and a high-quality touchpad. The speakers may not be perfect, but given the reasonable cost, this can be considered a nitpick. The laptop cannot be considered quiet, however, the fans will not distract much in ‘office’ tasks. Well, in extreme and turbo modes, of course, you might want to turn them off, or rather, put on headphones, and preferably with noise reduction. The battery also cannot be attributed as the most ‘survivable’, but this is a common case for gaming models now.

The Acer Predator Helios 300 Spatial Labs is a gaming powerhouse. If you want to experience demanding modern games at 4K / 60 fps with minimal compromise to settings, this is the laptop for you. As an all-rounder, though, it’s hard to fully get behind the Helios. Though it posts strong numbers during our productivity tests, design flaws hamper this laptop’s ability to cement itself as a great all-rounder. Weight, noise and heat issues mean this Acer essentially eliminates itself from easy day-to-day usage before you factor in a single performance metric. This is one of the least subtle laptops I’ve ever seen, and I both admire and resent that about the Helios. If you’re serious about PC gaming — and have money to burn — the allure of this machine’s specs is strong. At the same time, I can’t help but feel your money would be better spent elsewhere.

The Acer Predator Helios 300 Spatial Labs Edition has an entertaining party trick in its glasses-free 3D display, but it falls behind competitors that kick it to the curb at every corner. Worse still, the 3D entails a lot of sacrifices, particularly from the screen, including brightness and refresh rate, and still feels like hardly anything more than a novelty. For more than $3,000, you can do a lot better. For less than $3,000, you can still do better, and that’s what makes it hard to confidently recommend this machine. Start with a performance grinder like the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i Gen 8, and save a bundle. too.

While the guts of the Predator Helios 300 SpatialLabs Edition are pretty solid, the entire system is let down by its screen. The tech works, but if you’re into gaming on the go, this expensive package is a disappointment. I’d say even with the upcoming 13th gen Intel/Nvidia 40-series refresh of this product, having a limited 60Hz panel makes it a tough recommendation. When similar gaming laptops are reaching 240Hz and beyond, 60Hz even at 4K seems pretty wimpy. More than that, the inconsistent 3D implementation dulls the sharpness of the slow panel. For its $3,500 price, you really need to want the glasses-free 3D screen, and will need to be into any genre but fast-twitch shooters or e-sports titles that benefit from the responsiveness of a high-refresh screen. That’s a lot of caveats. I’ll admit that when the 3D effect works, it can be utterly enchanting. And there may be interesting applications of this technology—if they can get the refresh rate up in future SpatialLabs screens, then the premium might be worth it for gamers.

So should you give this laptop any consideration next time you're hunting for a gaming computer? The answer is yes only if you have bottomless pockets and an itch to try out novelties. Truthfully, if I owned this laptop, I would use the 3D function maybe 10% of the time. At that rate, there are laptops that deliver just as much, or almost as much, power as the Helios but for half the cost. Consider, for example, the Acer Nitro 5. This laptop offers a 17-inch, 144 Hz display and, while it uses the (marginally) less powerful RTX 3060 graphics chip, it also costs less than $800. To get closer to a higher-end laptop, there's the $2,500 Razer Blade 15 Advanced Model, with an RTX 3070 GPU card that closely competes with the GPU in the Predator. You also get a luxe 240Hz QHD picture, for $1,000 less than this Helios. You'll find the Acer Predator Helios 300 SpatialLabs Edition available at B&H Photo for around $3,500. While I enjoyed playing on this laptop with the 3D function switched off, this simply wouldn't be a feature I'm willing to pay for. Especially if you frequent the indie side of games, where there will almost certainly be no 3D compatibility development, you'll mostly find the glasses-free 3D to be a flashy novelty. And even in an era where we're pursuing the latest and greatest in immersive gaming experiences, glasses-free 3D is a tough sell when there's so much for VR on the market.

The SpatialLabs 3D technology showcased by the Acer Predator Helios 300 is undoubtedly very impressive and it’s clearly heading in the right direction. The effect is incredibly immersive given the right game, and even with the inherent drawbacks such as having to keep your head still, it’s great fun to game with. Right now, though, I’m not convinced there are enough compelling 3D Ultra-compatible games to justify the cost. Perhaps if the Helios 300 didn’t cost so much more than an equivalent non-SpatialLabs gaming machine I could make a solid case for considering it. However, when all is said and done, I still can’t quite shake the feeling that this is a technology demonstrator and that it would be wiser to wait for the next-generation model with an RTX40-series GPU and maybe even a higher native refresh rate.

If, for some reason, glasses-free 3D is still compelling to you, there are few other options. Acer also sells a standalone 15.6-inch SpatialLabs screen for $1,100 – but I don't need to tell you that's a bad idea. The company's ConceptD 7 laptop also had that screen, but it’s no longer available. There's also ASUS's upcoming spin on glasses-free 3D with its ProArt StudioBook 16, which looked compelling during our CES preview. Barring a miraculous advancement in holographics sometime soon, I'm ready to give up on the entire notion of glasses-free 3D. It just doesn’t make sense to spend $3,500 on the Helios 300 SpatialLabs Edition. While there's a chance the technology could eventually help a certain subsection of professionals, those folks would likely be served better with VR headsets, and potentially AR devices like the Magic Leap 2 in the future. Either option would deliver a better dose of 3D without the headaches of glasses-free tech.
