小身板,高性能? 继11寸和14寸产品之后,Alienware的专业游戏本设计师为我们带来了一款13寸设备。我们的评测将侧重于测试它的双核处理器是否可以支持GeForce GTX 860M与外置图形加速器全速工作。

The Alienware 13 is a beautifully designed and rugged feeling gaming laptop that you can take with you anywhere. As is often the case with Alienware, the price is just a little too steep considering the specifications. However, at this size we would be tempted to pick the 13 over any similarly sized rivals simply because it feels so well made. You also get Dell's excellent collect and return warranty that includes in-home support should the firm decide it's required. If you don't have as much money to spend, though, the Chillblast Defiant 2 Mini remains our favourite compact gaming laptop.

Given the quality of the Alienware 13 laptop (15 and 17-inch models have also just been announced), being the only device that can use the Graphics Amplifier is a minor niggle and it can be expected that other Alienware laptops will support the connection. At less than $2000 for the whole kit (laptop, high-end graphics card and graphics amplifier), a rig that can be both a gaming laptop and an upgradable gaming desktop is a great price and well worth the investment.

The Alienware 13 is good performer but it loses out to couple of sub-100k laptops, like the Lenovo Y50 and ASUS X550JK. The laptop will perform better with an external GPU, which can be used via the Alienware Graphics Amplifier, which again requires you to shell out more money.

Alienware and Dell have created their best portable laptop to date, which manages to squeeze in plenty of power into a relatively small frame. It's chunkier than many other laptops on the market, but it's practically future proof too for all your gaming needs if you invest in the Graphics Amplifier. If you're looking for a one-stop PC to take on the go and then crank the settings up in your favourite games when you get home, it's well worth checking out.

If you're in the market for a gaming laptop then it tends to be a shout between Alienware and Razer. With UK availability and a starting price of £949 with the Intel Core i5 chipset, the Alienware 13 certainly makes its mark. Just make sure you budget for the additional Graphics Amplifier and associated card as it'll add up quickly - but you can configure your ideal system right now and, if the price is right, it'll be whizzing its way to you before the Christmas period.

While other slim gaming notebooks are aimed at giving players a little bit of power and portability, Alienware promises the best of both worlds. By itself, the $1,699 Alienware 13 delivers solid gaming performance with long battery life and a captivating ultra-high-resolution display. Admittedly, I would have preferred the more powerful Nvidia GeForce GTX 870M card, but the 13's G860M GPU gets the job done.

By itself, the Alienware 13 is a fine laptop. It's equipped with capable guts for a reasonable price (at least to start) that should keep players plenty entertained. That is, so long as they don't mind knocking the graphical fidelity of games down to low in most cases.

Topping my wish list for a future incarnation of this product is access to higher-end GPUs (or an OLED screen in a larger laptop that can more easily fit a GeForce 980M card). But for an eye-catching new technology that's hard to find -- Samsung, HP and Lenovo each offer a single OLED PC product, and none for gaming -- the price for this Alienware 13 is surprisingly modest.

Finally, in more general purpose use, the Alienware 13 OLED feels great, looks great and offers responsive performance for power users and the mainstream alike. For content creation or other work-related high image fidelity requirements, the color reproduction, contrast and pop of this machine's OLED panel is second to none currently.

There's a lot to like about the Alienware 13. Its design is distinct and super-compact, its lighting is insanely customizable and its speakers are loud enough to fill your room. However, with a low-res 1366 x 768 display and gaming performance that's "meh" at best, you shouldn't settle for the lowest-end version of Alienware's slick laptop.

You’d probably expect top-notch performance in a tiny 13-inch form factor with the label Alienware on it and you are probably right to do so but in reality, the Alienware 13 is everything but a gaming powerhouse. Yes, we are once again met with impeccable build quality with excellent choice of materials – typically for an Alienware product – slightly bulky and a bit hefty for a 13-incher but nothing too alarming, especially for a gaming machine that is. We are still pretty impressed by the horsepower, storage options, and battery that the engineers were able to stick inside the small chassis. For example, you can get a hold of two M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD slots along with a 51Wh battery that will last for nearly a day with normal usage. That’s more than some other premium notebooks and ultrabooks can offer. And to be honest, that was the last thing we were expecting from a gaming-oriented notebook. Oh, and the touchpad and keyboard are pretty comfortable as well.

The bottom line? If you fit the profile -- you mostly play games at home but want a powerful laptop when traveling -- the combination of an Alienware 13 R2 and Alienware Graphics Amplifier may be the solution you've been waiting for. If you're not interested in the AMP, take pause to consider if you can be content with a GeForce GTX 960M, as it's the only option available at this time.

When it comes to sheer power, the Alienware 13 proves that size doesn't matter. As one of the smallest VR-ready systems available, the lightweight system makes a portable Oculus Rift and HTC Vive a reality. If that's not enough, the Alienware 13 is a stone-cold fox, with its slimmed-down dimensions and a supervivid OLED display that's sure to attract a fair number of onlookers. You also get a cushy keyboard that is perfect for typing reports or dishing out digital doom, an impressive audio system and respectable transfer speeds.

We tossed a few runs of Gears Of War 4 over resolution just for kicks and the Alienware 13 kicked it up a notch there too, with 60 fps performance at High image quality settings at a 1080p resolution. Incidentally, the machine also scored a 7.1 on the SteamVR performance test, showing it was also "VR Ready." Stay tuned in the days ahead as we step through the rest of the design, software and benchmark details of the Alienware 13 R3. For now, we're going back to work, gaming. It's a little tough, at the moment, to judge the Alienware 13's value compared to its competition, because when we wrote this, there were no other 13-inch, GTX 1060-based gaming laptops available (at least that we could find on Newegg.com). There was a 14-inch Aorus X3 Plus v6-PC3K4D with GTX 1060 graphics ready for pre-order when we wrote this. It purports to sport a higher-resolution (3,800x1,800-pixel) screen, and it is priced at $100 less. But that high-resolution screen is a poor fit for the abilities of the GTX 1060 graphics. We'd gladly pay $100 more for the privilege of gaming (and working) on the gorgeous OLED screen of the Alienware 13.

If you're not put off by its screen size, Alienware 13 packs a lot into its small frame: VR capability, a beautiful QHD touch-screen display, ample ports, good battery life, smooth gameplay, and high build quality. It's heavier and less sleek than the Razer Blade, but the Alienware's superior Pascal-based graphics, portability, and competitive price earn it our Editors' Choice award for ultraportable gaming laptops.

The Alienware 13 isn’t the prettiest gaming laptop around, but it is one of the most flexible and ticks all the right boxes when it comes to functionality. Whether or not the Alienware 13 is for you depends on whether portability is important. If it is, you should probably look elsewhere for lighter laptops from Razer, MSI and Aorus. If you don’t really care, the Alienware 13 offers decent hardware and features at an affordable price point.

Given the low-ceiling on how high you can push the fidelity of games running on the new Alienware 13, it’s hard to know who to really recommend this product to. Sure, the combination of brand power, high-end specs, slick glowy-metal-sci-fi-death-machine form-factor and the next-gen OLED display make the new A13 a downright appealing package. However, based on the performance we encountered, it seems difficult to justify spending this much on a gaming laptop that can’t deliver anything less than the best - and the Alienware 13 - OLED or otherwise - doesn’t quite live up to that standard.

When friends come to me asking for a laptop recommendation, I usually try to lead them through a process of figuring out what features they need, what size they want and what fits in their budget before offering them a short list of different options from different manufacturers. When they don't feel like doing the work, however, I usually shrug and tell them to look at Alienware. There's a reason for that. Dell's gaming brand has a history of making well-built gaming machines with great design and excellent performance that are a joy to use. The Alienware 13 is no exception. If you're overwhelmed by the dizzying array of choices available to you as a PC gamer but still want to be sure you're getting a high-quality machine, Alienware's latest won't let you down.

Drawbacks and all, this is still the best gaming laptop I’ve seen thus far - hitting the sweet spot between performance and portability. If you want the monster truck of gaming laptops in your bag each day, then this is the one to go for.
