The Asus ZenPad S 8.0 is one of the best compact Android tablets you can buy for less than £200, thanks to its impressive portability, comfortable user experience and dependable performance. It’s a shame it’s bogged down in crapware, but at least you can slot in a microSD card to boost the built-in storage.

The ZenPad S 8.0 targets a currently underserved segment of the tablet market. There are currently woefully few decent affordable tablets available. The ZenPad S 8.0 is far from perfect, with its custom ZenUI skin and out of date Android Lollipop operating system hamper its overall appeal.

The Asus ZenPad S 8.0 is special because it crams a good, super-sharp screen into a very slim and handy body for a great price. Samsung's best at this level is the Samsung Tab 4 8.0, which isn't nearly as good by comparison. If you have a bit more to spend you can often get a great deal on a Nexus 9 or last-gen Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4. But only because they're quietly being discontinued (at the time of writing). It's actually the £219 iPad Mini 2 that is the most alluring alternative. But how much does the extra £50 mean to you?

The ZenPad S looks very impressive on paper, particularly when you consider it costs £170 for the 16GB model - significantly less than the iPad Mini or Samsung's Galaxy Tab S2, arguably the two premium tablets to beat right now. On closer inspection it's clear to see why; the design might be gorgeous and the display resolution very high, but performance is only mediocre and battery life isn’t great either. If you’re looking for a gaming tablet to take on the move, this probably won’t fit the bill, but for web browsing and watching videos on the sofa, it’s a great buy.

Performance from the Intel Atom Z3560 is also very solid. There is enough processing power to deliver a good real world experience. A strong set of benchmark scores argue the point that the included Z3560 CPU is a mid-range processor. This CPU will please even the most impatient tablet users with its sheer speed. An 8MP camera is capable of delivering decent photos, too. They are not spectacular and I would still recommend using a modern smartphone for photography on the go. That said, images are fairly detailed for a tablet, and colours look good – so this camera can do a job.

How much would you pay for a tablet that comes with an 8-inch 2K display, new USB Type-C connector, 8MP/5MP camera combo, svelte/elegant design, 64-bit Intel Atom processor, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage with microSD expansion? How about $299 for the entire package? That’s not too shabby when you think about it, so it’ll definitely appeal to those who are cost-conscious.

ASUS has a history of building Android tablets with solid specs for the money (MeMO Pad, Nexus 7) and the ZenPad S 8.0 is yet another example. It has a really nice looking display with a 2048x1536 resolution, a fair bit of power provided by an Intel Atom Z3580 processor and 4GB of RAM, and even a newfangled (and reversible) USB Type-C port, though it limits transfers to USB 2.0 speeds.

The ZenPad S 8.0 Z580CA is undoubtedly a quality tablet for the price, especially if you keep the charging cable close. The benchmarks compete with much pricier devices, and its design is as comfortable to use as it is aesthetically pleasing. We'd still rather have the Xperia Z4 Tablet, for its superior enterprise software, longer battery life and attachable keyboard, but for anyone looking specifically for an ultra-portable 8in slate, this is one to consider alongside, and perhaps even instead of...

The ZenPad S 8.0’s biggest problem, however, is the thing Asus can do least about: the strength of the competition. For instance, you can pick up a 16GB Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 for around £270, or a 32GB iPad mini 2 for £279. That's a fair bit more cash, but both those devices are markedly more refined as a result. If you can live with its flaws, then the ZenPad S 8.0 delivers a hint of the high-end Android compacts for a little less, but frankly I'd recommend spending the extra - you'll be glad you did.

The Asus ZenPad S 8 0 offers a vibrant screen, sleek design and more than capable performance for $100 to $200 less than other premium 8-inch tablets. The $199 configuration, while not as powerful as the configuration we reviewed, is a particularly good value. ZenUI also offers some nice shortcuts and a good Kids Mode app for safely sharing the slate with children.

Despite lots of bloatware and mediocre battery life, the Asus ZenPad S 8.0 is still a very solid tablet for the $300 price with its premium design and impressive specs. If you're looking for high-end features on a budget, it's a worthy competitor to the more-expensive Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4, the forthcoming Galaxy Tab S2, and the iPad Mini 3. And if you don't mind the dip in onboard storage and RAM, the $199 model is an even better value.

The Asus ZenPad 8 Android Tablet is shaped more like a mobile phone than a tablet as it is taller than you think and also less wide than the normal. This shape means it is easier to hold in a hand than a lot of other similar devices, so possibly less easy to drop. The ZenPad measures 20.5x12.2x.7cm and weighs just 348grams.

While Asus may have been the first company to create a truly great affordable tablet in 2012, it’s 2015 budget follow up is slightly disappointing. It's ok for basic tasks, like video streaming and web browsing, but a mix of low powered hardware and software bugs hamper its overall appeal.

The Asus ZenPad C 7.0 is a fine tool for carrying in your bag wherever you go and using to check emails and social media and browse the web. Beyond that its functionality is limited, but what more can you expect from an £80 tablet? If you can stretch to the £99 Hudl 2 you will find a noticeable jump in performance, but the Asus is the more portable of the two.

The ZenPad 10 is no match for the Z4 Tablet but then the Sony package costs two and a half times as much. If you want to watch videos and listen to music without headphones then the ZenPad’s stereo speaker dock is well worth having. It really does sound very good. They keyboard isn’t great, but it is better than most no-name, third-party Bluetooth affairs.

The device itself is supplemented admirably by the Audio Cover, an accessory that not only protects the tablet, but also boosts sound volume and quality considerably, making the ZenPad 8.0 a fantastic media device. The only real weakness - and a significant one at that - is the low-resolution screen. Asus produces smartphones with full-HD screens for less than the asking price of the ZenPad 8.0 (Z380KL), so sticking to 1280x800 is a fairly major drawback for us. However, if you're looking for a good mid-sized, mid-priced Android tablet, this should offer the Xiaomi Mi Pad some competition.

The standout feature of the Asus ZenPad 7.0 is the audio functionality which it bundles with the Audio cover. Not only does the audio cover give a richer and louder sound, but the 2300mAh battery on the audio cover also gives a boost to the longevity of the tablet itself. Apart from that, the ZenPad 7.0 is like any other tablet – and an expensive one at that looking at the performance and feature sheet.

If you want a tablet for about 12K and don’t mind losing out on the ability to make calls, then there are better options like the Xiaomi Mi Pad available in the market. The Mi Pad has a larger display with a better resolution and better hardware powering it. The Asus ZenPad 7.0 has underwhelming performance when it comes to gaming but if you are on a budget looking for a voice-calling tablet, for absolute basic work, you can give it a look.

From its brilliant display and strong sound to its speedy processor and lightweight design, the Asus ZenPad Z8 is one great, pint-size tablet. Unfortunately, its user experience suffers from minor dings like slight pauses while switching apps and lackluster video-shooting.

The Asus ZenPad Z8 is a fun tablet, and I found myself playing games and watching videos more often than I usually do while testing it. Those are the use cases in which the Z8 shines the most, and if you’re in the market for a reliable Android tablet that’s going to give you one of the best multimedia experiences in this price range, the Z8 is absolutely worth checking out.

I didn’t expect to be impressed by the ZenPad Z8, but Asus clearly knows what it’s doing when it comes to making budget-friendly Android tablets. There’s a bit of the classic Nexus 7 buried somewhere in there, serving as a sturdy foundation for modern hardware and software enhancements. The real issue with this tablet is that it’s only available from Verizon, but if that’s not a problem for you, there’s nothing else to hold you back from picking one up.

I’ve always thought it’s a bit foolish to sign a two-year contract with a wireless carrier for a tablet. Sure, maybe the carrier knocks a couple hundred dollars off the purchase price, but at the end of the contract the cost of monthly service fee winds up being far more expensive than what you save. Use the Asus ZenPad Z8 as an example: Full retail price is $250, or you can sign to a two-year term to drop the price by $100, with a the lowest monthly data plan running $30 per month.

There is little complaining that can be done once you factor in the Z8’s affordable pricing. Although the display could be less reflective, there could be more RAM, and the camera could produce better images, there’s a lot to love about this tablet. With its dual front-facing speakers, excellent high-resolution display, and very good performance, the ZenPad Z8 is yet another home run for ASUS.

And indeed, we saw a lot else to like about the ZenPad 3S 10. The impressive display, extreme trimness, media-handling performance, and audio output all make it a worthy contender among iPad Air-size Android competitors. Add in the solid performance (battery notwithstanding), the 64GB of built-in storage that's expandable via MicroSD, and the relatively light weight, and you’ll find the ZenPad 3S 10 an attractive package for $299, based on what else is on the market around that price.

The ZenPad 3S 10 is a mixed bag. While I found it good enough for what I use a tablet for (primarily media consumption and light productivity), there are so many areas where ASUS could have improved it. The bottom-firing speakers and physical navigation buttons are mild annoyances, but the lack of any multi-window functionality is a huge issue for anyone looking to be productive. In addition, the smaller battery means you will might have to bring a charger for long car trips or extended binge-watching sessions.

Asus is touting a rather large game with the ZenPad 3S 10. As I mentioned in the intro for this review, the company’s goal is to offer a solid tablet experience for both professional and personal use at an affordable price. That’s not an easy feat to achieve by any means, so did it pay off for Asus with the ZenPad 3S 10?

Asus is delivering solid value for the money at $299 for a 2048-by-1536, 10-inch, 64GB tablet. Yes, there are better tablets out there—but not for this price. The ZenPad 3S 10 gives you the multimedia chops you'd expect from a tablet costing $100-200 more. But it's important to know where the ZenPad's limits are. Android doesn't have the range of tablet-oriented games you'll find on the iOS platform, or the quality of productivity apps you'll find on Windows. And the Mediatek processor here isn't going to rock the world with its gaming performance. But, once again, you have to spend around $500 to get a better processor, or an iOS or Windows tablet with this kind of screen. Just make sure to keep it near a charger.

The Asus ZenPad 3s 10 is a solid enough Android tablet, which at £300 is cheaper than the full-sized iPads. Media fans will enjoy the excellent 9.7-inch 2K display and Hi-Res audio support and there's some useful features for families too, while performance and battery life are perfectly fine.

Despite its ‘iPad-alike’ tendencies, Asus has done a good job crafting a media-centric slate. It’s light, thin and has a bright display. There should also be decent audio and plenty of power for gaming. It probably won’t sway long time Apple lovers, but it’s another decent Android option out there.

Under the hood, the ZenPad 3S 10 has a hexa-core MediaTek 8176 processor that is supported by 4GB of RAM. From our brief experience, everything seemed nice and smooth to operate, with no lag switching between various apps. There is 64GB of onboard storage with a microSD slot allowing for expansion up to 128GB.

The ZenPad Z10 is a decidedly better tablet than its cousin, the ZenPad 3S 10. It offers fantastic performance, wonderful build quality with a beautiful screen, a pretty decent software experience all things considered, and simply amazing battery life. It's because of these things that I think it is one of the best Android tablets you can get right now, for what that's worth. What makes it even better is that you get all of this for $329.99 outright, $149.99 on a two-year contract, or for $13.74 per month.

Android still isn't our overall pick for a tablet operating system. It has fewer tablet-optimized app experiences than iOS, and it has less capable productivity apps than Windows. But Android tablets are just fine for Web browsing, video playback, ereading, and plenty of games, and their prices often can't be beat. The Z10 gets you a lot for your money, making it a solid buy.

The $250 Asus ZenPad Z8s is a speedy media tablet at a decent price. Offering a bright display, great audio and sophisticated design, the ZenPad is hard to beat for the price. And if you're not sure if you want to shell out the cash all at one time, Verizon offers 24-month financing for $10.41 per month. Or you can opt for a two-year contract and get the ZenPad for $150 instead.
