A wonderfully thin and stylish laptop that packs a serious punch in the performance stakes.

Despite winning points for its speed, looks and portability, the Asus ZenBook 3 Deluxe isn’t good enough value compared to cheaper and more capable rivals.

This remains an eye-catching, ultra-portable laptop with a decent keyboard and trackpad, a nice 1080p display and dual Thunderbolt 3 connectivity, but it could have been much more. Competition in the premium Ultrabook space isn't letting up, and a simple CPU upgrade ultimately isn't enough for the ZenBook 3 Deluxe to challenge its rivals.

The Zenbook 3 looks the part of a slick and powerful ultra-portable laptop, only with a mushy keyboard and odd fingerprint sensor placement.

The Asus ZenBook 3 Deluxe is a pretty great notebook, with an attractive design, strong performance and a handful of neat features. However, there's one rather large and ugly fly in the ointment: the price.

Coming in at RM8,299, it also costs a lot of money. However, you are getting some of the best hardware in the market right now. While I personally think that the ASUS ZenBook 3 Deluxe is a stellar performer, and one that hits most of the right notes for an ultra-portable laptop, the reality is that this kind of performance and experience comes with a price.

The ASUS Zenbook 3 Deluxe doesn’t fall far from the tree. It sports the same sleek and premium built of its predecessor, the Zenbook 3. However, their difference lies in certain aspects — this one got a larger display, larger SSD capacity, and bigger battery. Nevertheless, it’s a worthy a successor and if you are willing to spend Php104,995 on a laptop that is compact, premium, and powerful, then this one will surely satisfy you.

Starting at £1200 and rising to beyond £1700, the ZenBook 3 Deluxe needed to be next-to-flawless to justify its price. However, a shortfall in battery life, an overly active fan and a slightly dodgy touchpad mean it doesn’t quite pass all the tests necessary of a premium laptop.

Asus has packed a 14-inch screen into a compact, solidly built yet lightweight chassis, although the screen's moderate resolution and lack of touch support will be an issue for some. The claims made for the quad speaker setup seem overblown, though, and Asus should reconsider the positioning of the power button and absence of an SD card reader. Some buyers (and their IT managers) might also hanker for Windows 10 Pro rather than Home.

The Asus ZenBook 3 Deluxe is the thinnest 14-inch ultraportable laptop we've seen yet, but whiny fan noise and short battery life spoil the deal.

In summary, the ZenBook 3 Deluxe is a good effort from ASUS that comes oh so close to perfection. It is well designed, thin, and very light, but what prevented us from giving it a higher score is its short battery life, audible fan noise and performance throttling issues. If these aspects things don’t bother you because you typically have light productivity needs, then the ZenBook 3 Deluxe is a supremely attractive and portable notebook with a larger than usual display (14 inches) for its form factor. These are the most salient highlights of this notebook.

In the end, the ZenBook 3 Deluxe UX490UA offers the kind of excellent performance we expect from Kaby Lake-based Core i7 ultrabooks, and respectable battery life. It’s a solid productivity machine that looks great. However, it definitely occupies a premium price segment, which might make it harder to overlook its 1080p display and arguably less than solid feel.

The Zenbook UX490 is an excellently crafted laptop with a beautiful, compact and light body, but also a very good keyboard, top-tier hardware specs and decent connectivity. However, in my opinion Asus somewhat sacrificed practicality for the sake of aesthetics on this computer, as the rather dim and glossy screen, the 46Wh battery and the potential throttling on higher loads (details in the article) are just not delivering the flawless experience I would expect from a premium computer that costs $1699 and up.

Asus slips a big screen into the thin body of the ZenBook 3 Deluxe, but the battery isn’t as upscale as the design.

Aside from the minor niggles, we really can’t find a fault with the ZenBook 3 Deluxe. It’s incredibly beautiful, well built, has pretty capable hardware plus the legs to go the distance on a single charge. But as always, there’s a catch – and that’s the price. The ZenBook 3 Deluxe UX490 starts at Php 81,995 for the 256GB model, and goes up to Php 104995 for the 1TB model that was in the notebook that we reviewed. That pricing makes it a pretty expensive notebook.

The ZenBook 3 Deluxe is a premium machine, but you're paying a lot for the unique aethestic and top-tier innards. It's great you can get a travel-friendly ultraportable with phenomenal speakers and a head-turning design, but you're going to have to pay for it.

The Asus ZenBook 3 Deluxe UX490UA is an incredibly slim laptop with breathtaking looks, a vivid display and a comfortable keyboard. On the surface, it's easy to fall in love with this comely clamshell. The biggest ding to the device is its poor battery life, coming in under 7 hours in our tests. At least you can use an external webcam to replace the poor, low-res one that comes built in, but you shouldn't have to do that on a $1,700 machine. If you can handle a thicker laptop, consider the Dell XPS 13, which is still our favorite notebook. It lasts longer on a charge, and offers strong performance and a wide variety of ports. Although you can get it starting at $800, I'd recommend starting at the $1,000 or $1,350 configurations for better specs. If you were looking at dropping $1,700 on the ZenBook 3, that's a deal. But if you're going for style points, the ZenBook 3 Deluxe earns top marks. Whether you're at work, the office or home, someone's going to notice your laptop.

The ZenBook 3 Deluxe makes it on our list of notebooks that look and feel at least as expensive as they are. The blue and gold design of our review unit looked classy from every angle. As a matter of fact, it could be hard to see from some angles; at 0.51 inch, this is one seriously thin 14-incher, and we weren’t able to find anything thinner. And despite its svelte chassis, the ZenBook 3 Deluxe had impeccable quality and strength.

Asus clearly looks to boost its ZenBook line with the Deluxe to not just compete against the 12-inch MacBook, but now the new entry-level MacBook Pro. The thing is, though, that with the MacBook Pro, you’re getting a far sharper screen for 200 bucks less.
