This phone can be attained from a number of retailers through Amazon right this minute for around $579 USD. It comes with GSM compatibility, which means Verizon and Sprint SIM cards won’t work – AT&T and T-Mobile USA will work. There’s also a CAT S61 out now if you’d like to see a very similar device with a larger display and a few new features.

The CAT S60 is not a phone for you and me. It's actually not a phone for most of us. It belongs to a niche market segment. We wish the regular market could have some of this ruggedness, or be at least 30% as rugged as this phone. For a rugged phone, the CAT S60 actually seems to be quite a device. If you are looking for a phone that can keep up with your rough and tumble lifestyle, there are hardly many phones that can compete with the CAT S60. It is currently in a class of its own.

The Cat S60 is not designed for the average consumer. More than individuals, it’s organisations and the service industry that might find true benefits from such a smartphone. The phone is available at certain offline stores and via Amazon at Rs. 64,999. It is distributed in India by Brandeyes, who’s the sole distributor for Bullitt Group in India. The phone ships with a 1 year warranty and after sales service will be handled by B2X.

Yes, if you work in an industry that puts you in the middle of the action, that too outdoors. While the company thinks the phone will appeal to those who live an active lifestyle, the quality of the primary camera might just put off most of them from picking this as their adventure phone.

All in all, the Cat S60 impressed us on a lot of levels. We loved its ruggedness and the ability to work under water. What made it a deal breaker was its steep price of Rs 64,999. This for the specs Caterpillar gives is just not justified, yes the phone has a thermal camera, but how many of us would use it on a regular basis. The Cat S60 seems to be the preferred choice for people who like Chandler Bing from the popular sitcom Friends and are a serial dropper. The rest have a lot of good choices, like the Apple iPhone 7 plus that has a larger screen and is water resistant too.

The handset is good, very tough, hard to break (except the screen – depends), water proof and dust proof. Overall hardware is powerful, battery life is pretty good and heat-up is under control. Camera is not at all good but the thermal camera is something unique.

Certainly, if you require a thermal camera on your phone and rugged features, the S60 is made for you. After all the testing, we can say CAT S60 is an amazingly tough smartphone and lives up to its rugged tag without hiccups. More importantly it doesn't feel like the phone is made for special purposes as the interface is seamless for daily use and there is no extra protective glass on the display that could hamper the touchscreen experience.

It’s for a completely different, niche crowd. It’s for tough, rugged folk who don’t wear flannel ironically. It’s for those of us who prefer not only function over form, but like some of our technology to still maintain a physical presence that is starting to fade with every new phone on the market. Soon phones will be paper thin holographic devices embedded in our skin, a bruise will break the screen. I’ll be the grizzled tech hoarder, still using my CAT S60 while you literally bleed over cracked screens.

Priced at $600, it’s not the most affordable phone available. Although, if you were to tack on a waterproof case to most of the $400 phones flooding the market, you’re going to come pretty close to the Cat S60’s price tag, and won’t have a Flir camera to show for it.

The Flir camera adds thermal imaging capabilities to a smartphone for the first time ever, which is a genuinely useful tool to have on your phone if you're in an industry that needs one. Not having to carry around a separate gadget means greater convenience, while the tough waterproof build means it can be used on a building site, in any weather, without ever having to worry that it'll be broken or water damaged.

If you need a super-rugged phone with a built-in thermal imaging camera, look no further than the Cat S60. But at $600, it's nearly as pricey as top-tier devices like the rugged Samsung Galaxy S7 Active and the shatterproof Moto Z Force Droid, both of which offer far better performance all around. You won't get a thermal camera in either of those phones, but you can always add an accessory like the Flir One.

The thermal camera is more than just a simple gimmick and should come in useful in the right hands. But with a price of R12 999 – basically the same as certain flagships – the S60 is a purchase for those in certain sectors or environments that will make the most of its rugged, workhorse design.

The S60 really is the smartphone version of Gordon Freeman’s HEV suit. It ticks every box that will suit a hard outdoor life, and doesn’t seriously skimp out on hardware to make that happen. OK, so you’re not exactly getting flagship specs, even if you’re paying top-end money, but the thermal camera could make all the difference if you’re in the trade.

For the rest of us, it is an expensive gadget, the novelty value of which is likely to wear off after a few trips to show it off down the pub. That said, it's a great handset if you are fed up of cracking the screen of your expensive phone and having to fork out a couple of hundred quid to get it repaired every time you drop it in the aforementioned pub's toilets.

If you love everything about the Samsung Galaxy S7 and don't mind forgoing its good looks in the name of durability, the Active could be the handset for you. The Cat S60 is impressive for different reasons. It may not match the Galaxy's specs, but it is by far the hardiest of the two and won't make your stomach flip if it drops into the drink. You might not necessarily find a use for thermal imaging, but you have to admire the innovation.

The Cat S60 tops its next-closest competitor, the Samsung Galaxy S7 Active, in almost every way. It's more durable, has a brighter screen, lasts longer on a charge and looks better. At $599, the S60 is cheaper, too. And that's before you even talk about its built-in thermal camera. Where the S7 Active reigns supreme, however, is its camera, especially for photos taken in low light, as well as its more robust Snapdragon 820 processor. But if I needed to regularly put my tech in unforgiving situations, the S60 is the phone I'd buy.

A camera that is impressive but can also be replciated with accessories on ‘normal’ devices.

The CAT S41 isn’t for everyone and isn’t a phone for the average consumer. It’s not pretty, it’s not expensive, it doesn’t run the latest software, and it’s not a status symbol. The Caterpillar S41 is one of the most rugged devices we’ve seen to date. The physical keys, IP68 weather resistance, and Gorilla Glass 5 make it a respectable choice for those working in dangerous environments. However, this is not a consumer device. Few smartphones are built to suffer the kinds of abuse the S41 can handle and still hit a reasonable price point. CAT has done a commendable job of bringing that durability to the midrange market without making too many sacrifices. This is a decently performing handset with almost incomparable battery life, and for the right customer, it definitely suits a need.

The robust CAT S61 puts all those who say that there are no innovations in the smartphone market to shame. However, with the built-in thermal-imaging camera, a laser distance measure, and the automatic measure of the indoor air quality, its most important features might be more useful for professional users.

There’s a pretty tight target market for the CAT S61 and it’s users who live and work in harsh environments that need a phone capable of surviving the day with them. If you’re not in a trade or industry that fits that bill then you’re not a target user.

There's really not much to see with the S61 aside from the laser measuring and FLIR camera. Both work decently but not nearly as well as bespoke gadgets for those purposes. What really kills this handset is its middling features and premium price. We know its a rugged phone so there are trade-offs but we feel this handset doesn't compel us to cough up the price of admission.

Overall, it’s great to see a phone fill a niche that isn’t being filled by many other manufacturers. For people that work in extreme conditions, this is a good option (or even if you’re just tough on your devices). It isn’t pretty and it will cost a whopping 899 Euros ($999 USD) when it launches in Q2, but this might be in the running for one of the best rugged phones out there.

If you can't afford to worry about your smartphone quitting before you do, the CAT S48c is well worth a look. This combination of durability and battery life is almost nonexistent among consumer handsets. If one thing is certain, Bullitt spared no expense building the latest CAT phone into the tank it ought to be.

It’s interesting that the CAT S48c doesn’t include any special features like we’ve seen in previous CAT devices. Most of the company’s phones have included some kind of extra feature to make the phone extra compelling to hardcore users, but, besides the ultra-rugged design and certification, the S48c doesn’t seem to offer much extra. Still, for those looking for a device that won’t break and can take photos underwater, this could be a compelling option.

The CAT S52 has slimmed down considerably so that it no longer passes for a chubby outdoor phone but more for a fancy smartphone with special skills. However, only a small battery fits into the well-protected case. In the review, we look at how this affects the suitability for everyday use.

With an eye beyond just the building site, the Cat S52 is a good-looking device that’s equally aimed at butter-fingered mainstream users as much as those who work in extreme conditions. It’s easily the most aesthetically pleasing work phone out there, and there are no major corners cut when it comes to durability. However, its middling performance and dated screen will make it a hard sell for regular users at this price point.

The sceptic in me wondered if it was really as good as they said it was, and so, I decided to have a little bit of fun. This is a review of the CAT S52 Smartphone, but it is, hopefully, like no review you’ve seen before. The idea was to have fun while also giving the phone a really hard time.

The S52 largely does what it sets out to do. As a mid-range device, you’d definitely find it lacking were it not for its rugged specs, which manage to successfully merge mainstream design with beefy defence-against-the-element capabilities. It especially proved its worth when it survived 10 minutes in a jug without being made fully watertight, and came away with some temporary camera damage.

The predecessor model retailed for about 500 Euros ($590). However, the CAT S42 is twice as cheap. This is possible because CAT has cut production costs, especially when it comes to the display and the battery. Read our review to learn whether or not the robust, waterproof smartphone is worth it.

That being said, if you’re in the market for a ruggedised device, then the CAT S42 will be available from Telstra through their small to large business users with plan starting at $18 a month over a 24 month period, $36 for 12-month payment plans + monthly plan costs on top of this, alongside retail partner, Harvey Norman, for $439 outright.

I only spent a few days with the CAT S42 as my primary device and I’ll admit that I was not only pleasantly surprised if not impressed with it. The phone does many things well. Especially when you consider the retail price is only $299. Battery life is its strongest attribute along with its physical durability. I didn’t purposely drop the phone but the CAT website boasts it will survive a six-foot drop on steel. I didn’t test its waterproof rating either. The IP68 rating indicates it will survive prolonged submersion in water beyond one meter.

Whether you should buy this phone is trickier than most other phones. If you're an independent contractor or own a construction or similar business, yes, this makes sense. If you work for someone else, the question shouldn't be whether you buy this phone but whether your company does.

Despite looking the part and being suitably robust, the S42 doesn’t sport the hardware to justify its price point. It’s short on memory, storage and video resolution. But the screen is decent quality, and the Cat applications are well designed.

The Cat S42 just has two real selling points – the ability to withstand drops, heat, cold, water, dust and more besides; and how easy it is to clean. If those would be big benefits for you, then the Cat S42 is one of the cheapest and most appealing rugged phones currently on the market.

The S42 should find a home in many industries, especially at Cat’s cheapest launch price yet. While it’s missing the performance power of non-rugged phones in its price point, and the fancier abilities of pricier, more specialised rugged devices, it’s still a solid performer that you would have to try very hard to break. It’ll last through a day’s consistent user, and the camera is good enough to do the jobs it will need to do.

The S62 Pro from CAT is intended for professional use. The flagship smartphone from the S6x series offers the highest IP rating and an integrated thermal camera, which features the most advanced sensor yet. As of writing this review, no other smartphone offers such a sensor. Read our extensive review before you decide whether or not you should buy the CAT S62 Pro.

For folks who want a no-frills rugged device that just works, the Cat S62 Pro is easy to recommend. Also for people who require infrared thermal scanning on the job, like oil drilling, chemical plants, and oil refineries, this device is a no-brainer. The Cat S62 Pro also has good Android Enterprise support along with EMM (Enterprise Mobility Management). This makes it a top contender for IT departments at companies that have a lot of workers needing rugged smartphones. For the casual user, though, you might want to consider getting a Pixel 6 and putting a sturdy rugged case on it for roughly the same price and overall a vastly superior smartphone experience.

A large portion of the Cat S62 Pro’s $649 price went towards having the best thermal sensor and an ultra-durable design, which means sacrifices were made pretty much everywhere else. At best, this phone performs as well as mid-range phones that cost hundreds of dollars less. Flir sells thermal camera attachments for both iOS and Android devices, so you could theoretically turn almost any phone into a thermal imaging device. However, the Flir One Gen 3 attachment costs $229.99, and carrying around a separate camera module is a lot less convenient than an all-in-one device like the Cat S62 Pro.

You'll find better performing rugged phones elsewhere at this price point, or significantly cheaper if performance isn't a priority and you don't need the FLIR sensor. Clearly, this isn't a phone designed to appeal to everyone, but for those who want great quality FLIR imaging, the CAT S62 Pro is an incredible choice.

When buying a CAT phone you can expect a solid rugged device that can be used in an outdoor professional environment without worrying too much if it’s going to withstand a bit of rough and tumble. You’re not getting the best processor or most amazing camera (although taking pics in infrared is pretty damn amazing), but it will serve you in good stead. Indeed, the battery life might have decreased, but overall the S62 Pro feels like a decent upgrade from the S61.

Very few phones offer the sort of rugged protection for your device that the Cat S62 Pro has, and throw in a thermal imaging camera as well. If you think you'll make use of those two strengths of the phone, then the relative weaknesses aren't going to bother you.

This device offers an excellent user experience and has features that could be especially useful in some sectors. The only caveats are a relatively low-resolution camera for a flagship design and the curious lack of wireless charging.

Although the CAT S22 Flip has a limited target demographic, we can see this one doing really well for its users. It's the right blend of smarts and capabilities in a form factor that's very portable and built to take a beating. If your job requires that you get down and dirty or in situations where dust, dirt, and debris might be a concern, the last thing you want to do is pull out a fancy $1,000 flagship phone. At $234, the CAT S22 Flip is the sort of device that that fills a small void but does it very well.

The CAT S75 in my mind ticks all of these boxes and then it adds the extras that will really appeal to outdoor users as well with the enhanced tracking functions and offline SMS services. however with the see all requiring extra costs, I think the amount of users that will be buying the phone specifically for those functions is somewhat niche. Now to be fair this is not the first ruggedised phone we have seen but it is one of the better-specified ones and the fact that the software is relatively unencumbered is a nice bonus. The only other widely available ruggedised phone I was able to find while doing this review in person was a Samsung Galaxy XCover Pro which is actually no longer available but it has much weaker specs and is a much older model.

The critical takeaways from the S75 are that it is very robust, does have sufficient performance to deliver a decent user experience and, most important of all, the Bullitt Satellite Messaging solution works as advertised. Considering you need to be outdoors to position the phone for satellite comms, having a screen that worked better in bright sunlight might have made it even better, but workarounds can be found. The specification of the phone isn’t amazing, but it’s more than most users will need unless they’re using a graphically intensive app or gaming. However, the one silly mistake is that you can’t use a MicroSD in this phone alongside a conventional SIM and the one needed to make Bullitt work. If ever a phone needed an e-SIM capability, it was this one.

The Cat S75 targets a specialised niche. Not everyone is going to require a phone that’s sealed and hardened to this degree, and its performance isn’t as good as cheaper phones from other manufacturers. The phone seems aimed at those who intend to get really lost and away from the beaten track in the wilds of Europe. Once the satellite service is widened to include more of the world, then it may become more useful for travellers, scientists, journalists or anyone else popping into the jungle away from phone coverage. Without the satellite messaging system it’s a mid-range phone that’s let down by having 6GB of RAM instead of 8, and by a GPU that seems a step down from the usual one found in Dimensity 900 phones. The tough exterior and waterproofing is nice to have, but they’re not enough to buy this phone over others if you’re looking for something to use all the time. If however, you prefer your phones with Motorola branding then you can also pick this phone up as the Motorola Mobility made Defy 2 although I think this is limited to America’s at this time. As a small treat here is a link to the app satellite messaging app working as it should, not as I tried to demo unsuccessfully in the video above!!

CAT-branded phones aren’t a new thing. We previously covered lots of these Catapillar branded handsets, most recently the excellent S62 Pro. The S75 is a significant step up from the S62 Pro, having a bigger screen, better cameras, a larger battery and a much more powerful SoC. However, it still comes with the same 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage as its predecessor, which seems less than modern rugged designs now typically come.

There's no getting around the fact that the Cat S75 is a bit of a beast. It's hardwearing, robust, and ready to handle just about anything you can throw at it. If you live the kind of life that could also use those adjectives, this is probably a great option for you. If not, though, it might be a tougher sell. The Cat S75 isn't a bad phone, but there are certainly options out there with a more conventionally appealing spec sheet for similar money. With that being said, I still think it's worth consideration. The Satellite Messaging functionality alone is worth the cost of entry, and gives it an edge that nothing else has.

The Cat S75 smartphone comes in collaboration with the Bullitt group, and they have monthly and yearly plans to use two ways satellite communication features. You can download the official app to easily run those satellite messenger services. Though, the cost will depend on the carrier. For now, the Cat S75 is one of those rugged phones that comes with a slim and sturdy body with incredible features. Although those services are rolling out in North America and Europe, the company is expanding its services to other regions in the upcoming months. However, if you want a traditional rugged phone, you can check out Motorola Defy 2 as an alternative option.
